I just got off the phone with Verizon, seeing if I could still order a Galaxy S3 and be able to keep my unlimited data plan. I was informed that any subsidized phone activated on the account after their share data plans go into effect (June 28th) will lose unlimited data. I asked what about all the people who preordered the SGS3 to safeguard their unlimited data (phones expected to ship July 1st), & was told they will lose it, since the phone can't be activated until 3 days after the share data plans go into effect.

That is how Verizon is getting a bunch of people off of unlimited data plans, and a particularly back door & s****y way to do it. So for anyone that has unlimited data & has preordered the Galaxy S3, you better call Verizon & find out for yourself if you need to cancel your order.

I'm pretty sure Verizon said themselves you'll get to keep your unlimited data. This would cause a HUGE outrage if they went back on that statement

This is strange since Verizon's press release said customers are free to keep their current plan.

Although I just upgraded both my lines, I am still interested.

Fram & Nightx, the devil's in the details. You can keep your unlimited data, but the phone has to be activated on your line before the 28th. That means the phone must be in your hand before the 28th so you can activate it on your line. Considering the SGS3 is supposed to ship until July, how are you going to be able to activate it. Call Verizon if you don't believe me.

As far as Verizon I would expect nothing less from them. Everyone worried that they'd use the Galaxy S3 to get people off of unlimited data, and they are, they're just not being open about it. But like I said, call them if you don't believe me. All I'm trying to do is ensure that people aren't unknowingly giving up their unlimited data.

From the article and announcement linked in another thread:

"Customers are free to keep their existing plans, but there is no fee or contract extension to move to the new Share Everything Plans."

Doesn't this mean people can stop panicking about keeping unlimited data.?

Are free to keep their existing plans as long as you don't renew your contract at the subsidized price after the 28th. All that is saying is that even if you just started a new contract, you can switch to the shared plan without paying a fee or extending your contract.

According to VZW CSR's, as long as the phone is pre-ordered you will keep the unlimited data plan. When I pre-ordered the phone on the 6th, I chose my plan. However, I think most of us are just hoping and assuming and we won't know for sure until we get the SIII in our hands.

vzwuser76, the CSR you spoke to was mistaken. Losing unlimited data has nothing to do with activating a phone on a line. Signing a contract is what affects that. You can buy a used phone, or buy an unsubsidized new one, and activate it without changing a thing on your service. Verizon even stated as much, the only time you lose unlimited after the 27th is if you sign a new contract, something buying a subsidized phone requires... Pre-orders tentatively sign a new contract at time of pre-order, so that is why GSIII pre-orderers will keep unlimited.

Actually, no. You have started the process of a new contract when you preorder, but it's not final until you accept the terms of the new contract when you activate your phone. The poeple I was talking to were the ones who preordered using an upgrade, not the ones who are buying at full retail. If anyone used an upgrade to preorder the SGS3 & has unlimited data, those are the ones who are gonna lose it.

I was just on the phone again with Verizon CSR, asking about what Fram & Nightx had mentioned from the press release about keeping your existing plan. Keeping your unlimited plan & upgrading are two different things. The only way to keep your unlimited plan, is to have accepted the terms of the new contract before the 28th, otherwise you will be subject to the shared data plans. That's 2 CSRs who are in agreement, which never happens on Verizon.

All I know is that they are telling me if I preorder today (using my last upgrade), that I will lose my unlimited data, because I will not be able to accept the terms of the new contract (usually during activation) until after the shared data is in effect. If you are indeed right, then why have 2 CSRs said that if I want to keep unlimited data, do not preorder the SGS3?

I'm not going to keep trying to defend my position when I have made the effort to call in and get the information. All I was trying to do was help people out. If you don't believe what I have gotten from Verizon, do nothing. But I'm not going to feel bad if you lose your unlimited data.

This. You are signing a contract with Verizon that includes unlimited data. Verizon would have to break the contract to change this

:(

hope this inc 4g comes out quick... otherwise it's back to getting the maxx or possibly looking at the sgiii before the 28th... i do not want to lose my unlimited data.

I don't want to say I told you so, and I hope Verizon proves me wrong and releases this phone before the 28th. But I said, I bet they will wait till the Shared plan get put in place and then release this phone. What I don't understand is why these new phones are all about fast and all about data, but then the phone companies are going to put limits on you. I just don't understand it. I am actually going to buy a Inc 2 tonight because the Inc I was going to buy locally fell through. If this Inc 4G doesn't get released till after the Share Plans, I may just hang onto the Inc 2 and not even upgrade. I have hesitations about ordering the Samsung and then trying to sell it.

I just dont understand why when preordering the phone, you have the option to keep unlimited data. What is Verizon going to do? Throw everyone into the 2gb for 30$ data plan? That would ENRAGE their customers. Not only do they not get to keep their unlimited data but are forced into the 2gb for 30$ data plan.

You have to accept the terms of service when you pre-order. Until the 28th, the contract is in the "old" language, which has a provision for grandfathered unlimited data. Therefore, people who order, or pre-order, prior to the 28th, will retain their unlimited data. :)

Am I missing something in this... Shared Plans... I see it says you CAN keep your existing plan it is your choice and I do not read anything that says we will be forced to give up unlimited data if you chose to keep your same plan. From what I read it's a choice if you want to move to one of the Shared Plans..

Are you talking about people who are buying subsidized are able to keep their unlimited data, or people who are paying full retail.

As I said in the last post, when I called in & talked with 2 CSRs, both told me that if I used my upgrade (subsidized) that I would lose unlimited data. The reason I'm even thinking of getting a SGS3 is to sell it so I can get the Inc4G whenever it comes out, so paying retail would be pointless for me.

The main thing is I need to be very careful with our data plan. We not only have unlimited, but a $20 discount per line as long as we keep a data plan on every line. That's $100 per month that we could possibly lose. SO I'm gonna err on the side of caution in this case.

Like I said before, all I was trying to do was help people out. It wasn't to inflame the forums or get a laugh out of it. I know how much some people need their unlimited data, and didn't want them to lose it. End of story.

I understand you are trying to help, and you are getting this info from a Verizon CSR, but again, Verizon has made an official statement that GS3 pre-orders, subsidized or not, will be grandfathered on unlimited data if the customer currently has it.

Doesn't matter, got a decent CSR who sent me to telesales, who in turn essentially called the first 2 CSRs morons. He did say to order any subsidized phone maybe 2-3 days ahead of the 28th to make sure it goes through. He also said that he's at headquarters (never heard that before) and that he'd see any phones that are coming for a month or 2, and he's seen nothing on the Inc4G. Granted he was pushing me hard for a SGS3, but just though I'd pass that along.

So, sorry to stir things up, I'm gonna go somewhere for a lil quiet time.

No worries. Like you said, you heard something, and were trying to help. No shame in that. Quite a few of us have had some interesting CSR experiences, they just aren't reliable enough to take as the seemingly official position that they are, being employees of VZW and all. I have found the telesales group to be the best to call for buying phones, they always seem to be the most in the know. And they usually have access to some pretty sweet discounts too if you ask. :D

so it may possibly be best to pre-order gs3, don't open the box (do the *228 on your current phone to activate the new contract, keeping your unlimited data). when the inc4g comes out - buy it at retail price (now you have your inc4g and your unlimited data). then sell your brand new, unopened sg3 at a "cheap" price to offset the $$$ your just spent on the retail inc4g ("cheap" being cheaper for the buyer compared to them buying a retail price sg3 phone, yet still enough to cover the price you paid for the inc4g).

Dude, nobody is upset with your posts. Even though this doesn't effect me, I appreciate your posts.

I think verizon should release details on grandfathered plans

I really do appreciate your efforts, vzwuser76. I am in all sorts of confusion and panic though, so thanks ;)

What I am wondering is if you are on a 3G plan right now, or are you on a 4G plan?

To my understanding, 3G people who want to switch over to 4G after the rollout are screwed, which may be the center of this debate.

Verizon did say in the past that 3G to 4G past the rollout would NOT be able to keep their unlimited plan. So I think the people that should worry are those that are on 3G that preordered the GSIII.

If you are already on the unlimited 4G plan, you (in theory) shouldnt have anything to worry about.

I hope that makes sense....

EDIT: Someone posted this on a deal discussion site, and found it to be a little funny YET STILL hold some truth ;)
"So during activation if the unlimited data is taken off, then they are changing the original contract and thus voiding it, you get to keep the phone at subsidized price, and not have to extend the now void contract."

There is a simple solution to all this. Don't upgrade, buy your device out right and your can keep you existing plan.

I just got off the phone with a customer service rep... (800) 922-0204... She was very helpful and gave me as much info as she could. She said they just got the info today and have not had a lot of training on it. I am on an old Alltel plan and this is what she told me...

1. I can keep my Alltel Voice\Text plan as long as I wish. Even when upgrading devices or signing a new 2 year contract

2. I can NOT keep my unlimited data, I will be forced to chose a tiered data plan if\when I chose to sign a new 2 year contract. It has nothing to do with 3G to 4G, 4G to a new 4G.. etc.. After June 28th, IF you chose to sign a new 2 year contract with Verizon you will be forced to give up your unlimited data plan.

3. If you are on a current National Freedom Plan (Current Verizon Plans) You can stay with that plan if you chose to, you do not have to switch to a Shared Everything plan. Same thing here applies though. If you have a current Verizon Plan and have unlimited data, and chose to sign a new 2 year contract, you will have to chose a tiered data plan.

After June 28th,....right?

Just move to Sprint. If my company didn't pay for my plan I'd dump VZW in a heartbeat. WAY too expensive.
