Root Incredibly dumb rooting question - help appreciated

Amarah

Newbie
So I've finally decided to take the plunge and root, but I swear I must be an idiot because I'm having trouble with step 1 of Jon's instructions:

"Run c:\sdk\SDK Setup.exe (You will receive error messages, this is okay. Once the application is installed you can close all windows."

My problem? When I unzip the google sdk download, there isn't a setup.exe file. I've got a manager.exe file, but no set-up.

Help?

Thanks in advance...

theres no need for the sdk if you are just trying to root... what are you trying to accomplish?
If you just want root, follow the instructions on unrevoked's website. Or dougpiston has an easy write up on his website:

Hmmmm..... Getting the following error message when I try to update the drivers:

Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.
Android Bootloader Interface
The system cannot find the file specified

Suggestions?

Not sure how helpful this may be, but I rooted with unrevoked on a mac. Didn't have to install any drivers. It was quick and easy and the way to go. My suggestion, find a friend with a mac and borrow it for ten minutes.

Hook up to PC, go into hboot. Go to device manager right click on bootloader and install driver manually from "specific location". Point it to the driver file you placed on the desktop or wherever you loaded it to.

???

Thanks for the response, but there's no "bootloader" to right click on... Any other suggestions?

Ok, so I was going off memory and my memory is getting worse in my old age. :D

Here:

THanks, Iowa.

I'm actually following all of the directions in that doc, but when I right click on Android 1.0 and click to Update Driver Software, it starts to work, and then I get the error message that I posted above.

I've tried re-dowloading the drivers and re-extracting them (thinking there might be a corruption problem), but to no avail.

I'm feeling a little stuck here...

Sad to say I'm still on XP but I think there's an option on some newer Windows versions to run as administrator or similar. Not sure if that applies here or not. Just a thought.

Same here. I rooted my old Eris on my Mac and my new Incredible. It's much easier. All you need is ten minutes and you're done

Did you download the modified hboot drivers in the wiki?

public:windows_hboot_driver_install [RootWiki]

When installing the modified drivers, you have to point it to the folder manually. That wiki has good info.

Plus, if you have slcd screen, you might need an updated version of unrevoked. If you flash and get two white lines on each side of the screen when going to recovery, you need a new version.

hope this helps.

I rooted for the first time last week.

I'm still on XP and as stated already you have to install the drivers manually (point the drivers where to install from) From memory, which is kind bud hazy ;), when you install the drivers there should be 2 options you can click on. You want the bottom option and from their you can go to where you downloaded the driver and then everything should work.

Wait, so instead of Android1.0, I should click on the option that pops up directly below it? If this works, you're going to officially be my new hero. ;)

What does the option say? I know on the install screen there are 2 differnt options and the one that says "install from different location" or something to that effect is where you want to be. After clicking on that chose the folder you downloaded the driver into, select it and click ok.

Also, don't forget, if you have an SLCD don't forget to download the recovery fix that doug piston posted here in step 3A. Once downloaded, unzip it and remove the recovery.img file and place it somewhere you'll remember (IE: in the folder with the driver you just installed) the go into unrEVOked File>custom recovery and select recovery.img and click ok. You now have a working Clockwork Mod Recovery to flash ROM's, zips and most importantly MAKE BACKUPS
