Root IncrediLight - LED Flashlight App

Okay... You asked for it.. Here's the LED Flashlight widget... It's a widget that toggles Off/Low/High and another widget that triggers the extra bright flash function.

I'm asking for 0.99$ so I can try to recover some of my investment of time and the market setup fee. Let me know how it works.

Hey all, I just took a stab at writing an app for my HTC Incredible that runs the LED Flash like a flashlight (if rooted) to try out the Android SDK. I guess it also works for the EVO as well rumor has it. You have to have root installed and give the app privileges. For those of you lucky enough to be rooted: (Us poor Incredible users aren't as lucky as you EVO folks) You can install get it below:

The first app you select brightness or the flash (It's free):

The second is two widgets that turns on the light and fires the flash. I'm charing 0.99$ to try to pay for my marketplace setup fee.

Thanks!

I would use Led Desire Light. You can set how brightly you want it to light up when you set the widget. And if you actually go into the program you can use SOS and even flash words or sentences in Morse code. I found that Led Light is not bright enough.

Great work snowzach. And before any even attempts to complains about the price increase, he put his OWN time into making this app for YOU, so keep that in mind.

Hey great app man. Finally making great use of my leds hehe. But two problems:

the app will turn off if the screen turns off.
the app will also shut down if you turn the phone to landscape mode.

just some bugs to consider fixing. good luck and thanks for your effort man. good job so far.

edit:
damn just as i posted this you already fixed the landscape bug LOL. quickness man. one more bug to go =)

I'm confused. We all keep complaining about battery life, then you use a $500 phone as a flashlight? Wouldn't this really suck down the battery?

That's probably because you're not supposed to run it that bright for so long. Those LEDs are only meant to run at their full brightness for ~1 second, like a flash. The longer you run them at full brightness, the faster they die, and you can kill them quite quickly that way.

Sweet... LED Light works like a champ!

FYI, 1 LED light is designed/capable of running for 11years non stop. I doubt this app will even touch that number.. Ill have a new phone before i even hit 1 year of use LOL

Ha ha, yah, I fixed the landscape problem late last night. I uploaded a new version that will keep the light on even if the app is killed. Is this the functionality you think people will want? I liked the idea of the app killing the light when it exited but Android is pretty inconsistent about when it kills apps so I can see how that was a problem. To turn the light off now, you need to reload the app and select off (if the app goes away).

Thanks for all the great feedback! Keep the suggestions coming...

I also updated the icon.. (I'm clearly not an artist if anyone can tell from my artwork, heheh)

@ vincent, I hope you don't mean the LED's will die or burn out. They are extremely efficient and burning them out would be unlikely.

It depends on how they are driven and how well they are cooled. They can in fact burn out quickly if run too hard for too long. Other phones are known to have burned out their LEDs via flashlight apps.

I have the LED Light app and I have 1 LED light dead. I'm not sure if the app contributed to it or not, but I've never left the light on longer than 5-10 seconds...

Given that the built-in camera software literally only lights the LED as its taking the picture (and doesn't use it during composition), it seems likely that the heat-sinking for the flash LEDs is not intended for continuous operation.

If you saturate the heat-sink, you WILL fry the LEDs.

I use LED Desire its pretty cool you can even type in text and it will blink out the morse code for you.

I know its probably not best to use your phone as a flashlight for long peroids of time, but how will this fry the lEDs. Aren't LEDs in flashlights all the time?

LEDs used in flashlights have large heat-sinks; the goods ones are usually coupled to the case of the unit (where the case is metal at least).

I don't know what heat-sinking is used in the Evo 4G for the flash LEDs. Sometimes its just the solder pads that mount the LED. If that is the case, then running it for more than a few seconds at a time will kill it very quickly.

Regardless though, if you saturate the heat-sink, the LED will die. The question is, how long will it take to saturate, or is it sufficiently well cooled that you can't (highly highly doubtful).

Bought the app, works great. Would there be a way to change the position of the widget Icon so it is moved up a little so it would be in line with other icons? Looks a little funky sitting at the very bottom of the icon space. Thanks!
