Root Installing Custom Rom Help

matt71893

Newbie
Hey All,

I posted earlier because I needed help unlocking bootloader on my EVO 4G using the HTCDev method. I'm happy to say that I successfully did that, thanks to the help I received on these forums. Now, I'm trying to install MIUI on this thing, and I cant figure out how it's done. It seems CWM doesn't work so I can't boot into recovery. It says I need root access...I thought I had this? Any help would be great.

congrats on unlocking the bootloader!

i would ditch clockwork mod and go with amon ra 2.3. to get amon ra working you need to follow the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html. there is instructions on installing a custom recovery.

after that i would use this guide: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html for instructions on how to flash a rom.

Go to our rooting for dummies gingerbread guide. Follow the directions there in the after root section to switch your recovery to Amon ram and the flagging section for flashing roms.

What miui are you using? Swypers gingerbread build is the best

the only thing is by unlocking the bootloader the normal PC36IMG file will not work. i'm gonna add this to the guide but here it is:

1.download this file:
http://themikmik.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5412&d=1327671265

2.rename the file by deleting everything but the PC36IMG part of the name. just make sure not to add an extra ".zip" to the name as windows hides extensions

3.move the file over to the sd card

4.reboot into the bootloader

5.it should find it and ask you to update, select yes when it does.

and congrats you now have amon ra2.3!!!!!

now you can flash miui with no issues.

Did what you said, but when start up the bootloader, it says "Main version is older. Update Fail" It doesn't give me an option to update. Only to boot up the phone. Did I screw something up?

oops sorry that is the wrong PC36IMG file. crap i can't find it at the moment.

here is what you should do, taken from this guide:
How to get Recovery
here is a little more details on how to get a recovery onto your phone. there is a couple ways of doing it. you can use the fastboot command to install recovery or you can use the android flasher program. either way, it is pretty simple. i will leave the decision up to you.

method 1

you can install amon ra 2.3 by the following:
1.download amon ra 2.3 from here:
PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip
2.extract the recovery.img file and place it in the android folder you created when unlocking your bootloader.
3.on your phone after you have unlocked your phone you should be in the bootloader menu screen, select the fastboot option
4.on your computer press and hold shift while right clicking the android folder.
5.select open command window here option (windows 7)
6.enter command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
congrats!!!!!! you have just installed amon ra 2.3

method 2

how to install amon ra2.3 with android flasher
Android Flasher, what is this and how do i use this?

well with android flasher, you can flash radios, your splash screen (that is what the htc white screen is called right before sprint's boot animation), and your recovery. you will need to extract the .img file from the .zip file. in this case i will show you how to install a custom recovery amon ra2.3.

so here is what you will need to do:
1.download android flasher from here:
AF Downloader
2.and extract it to someplace on your desktop where you can find it.
3.next you will need to download amon ra 2.3from here:
PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip
4.extract the img.file and place it some where you will be able to find it.
5.run android flasher
6.go to the recovery slot and select browse and then navigate to the amon ra .img file
7.select it and then select recovery
8.then at the very bottom select flash

congrats!!!!!! you now have amon ra 2.3 installed.

Thanks so much. Got it installed and going to do a nandroid backup in a minute. I can't even begin to tell you how much help you guys have been. Before I go ahead and do anything else, do you guys have any recommendations regard MIUI Roms? Do you know if there is one that is running Ice Cream Sandwich in a stable state? I was planning on using the one from their website. Thanks again guys, I appreciate it.

best thing to do is like you said make a nandroid backup and give it a try.

let us know what you think of the rom.
