Root [International] Failed ROM upgrade

Youre welcome mate

Hi there, thanks for yesterday :)

I've successfully installed gapps for 4.3, and successfully restored my titanium backups. And I've noted that the phone is much more fast than before! :)

Can I please ask you a couple of questions maybe you can answer me when you have some time?

1) Why the old sms' I had sent before the upgrade didn't restore? Weren't they part of the titanium backup? This goes also for the phone contacts, I could only restore the contacts that were stored in the SIM card, is there maybe a way to restore the contacts that were stored on the phone's internal memory also?

2) What do I need to move to 4.4, and do I need to do this in the first place?

3) I had backep up system apps with titanium, but you told me not to restore them. What do they contain?

4) Someone told me that this twrp is more used than cwm these days. What do you suggest? Shall I remove (if that's possible!) cwm and install twrp? And in that case, would I have to re-flash the ROM?

Thanks, and apologies for being such a pain!! :D

Lol you're not a pain. I like helpin with stuff like this the way people helped me :)
1 nah titanium doesnt save contacts or sms. Sms is something i never think about because i delete them anyway. I think there are apps that do it though for future reference.
Man im sorry about the contacts. Most people have them syncd with google so they travel from phone to phone and rom to rom with you. If they were on the phone then i think theyre lost :(

2 the 4.4 roms dont have as many added features as the 4.3 ones (yet) but they are good.
Go into recovery now and make a backup to external sd (sdcard1).
This will back up the complete phone, everything. So you can try other roms and always have your current setup to fall back on. (You should have done this before flashing PA the 1st time lol) :)

3 the system apps are basicly what were in the gapps package and the rom and they wont work with the rom youre on.

4 you can flash twrp now if you want without reflashing anything else. Its all down to preference. I use Philz recovery which is based on CWM but on my tablet i use TWRP.

Welcome thealley!!

I moved your thread to the International root forum for your device ;)

Kudos to funky for getting you thru this....you have a great member helping you thealley ;)

Glad you got your device going!!

Lol cheers Mike xx :D

Yeah TheAlley this is the best place for you now youve got rid of that samsung crap from your phone mate

Just a thought. Can TWRP read backups made with CWM-based recoveries?

I installed TWRP for a brief moment but couldn't find my backups so reverted back to Philz touch recovery.

I'm sure I've read somewhere since that TWRP backs up using a different format, so doesn't work with ClockworkMod nandroid backups.

I lasted about 10 minutes on TWRP lol.

thealley, are you sure you didn't have your contacts backed up to your google account?

If you did you could re-sync your phone and get them back. If not, I would recommend setting that up from now on. Go into settings and scroll down to your accounts. Select your google account and choose to backup your contacts and sync them. Then in the future you will always be able to restore your contacts from google. You can even read them on a computer in a browser on the gmail website.

This is the app that I use for backing up and restoring my sms messages:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore

And this is the app that I use for backing up my call logs:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.CallLogBackupRestore

I'm glad you're finding your phone to be much faster now. :)

Wait until you try 4.4.2 :thumb:

I don't think twrp can read cwm backups.

I briefly used cwm when I newly rooted my s3 then immediately switched to twrp since that's my preferred recovery as well it didn't find my cwm backup.

Not sure about twrp reading cm backups but i was digging around in Philz Touch earlier (looking to see if i can back up EFS [it can]) and i stumbled upon an option that looks like it can restore twrp backups (philz is CWM based)

So Philz is superior in terms of compatibility :)

No unfortunately they weren't synched, however most of my contacts were on my sim card. I've taken your suggestion to synch with Google though, cheeers :-)

And thanks for the apps. I had thought that titanium would back everything, but apparently not the sms'.

Thanks everyone, all you guys on this forum are rreally helpful!!

Titanium can back up sms but you gotta select it. The usual options I use are all user apps, sms, call logs, data and wifi access points.

Hi, I had backed up all user apps and all system data but I don't see an option in Titanium to backup sms, call logs and wifi access points. Could it be due to the version? Mine is 6.1.5.2.

I think the Pro version offers that ;) Personally, I think its worth the money.
If you decide to buy the ProKey for TB, keep the free one on the device as the ProKey unlocks the free version;)

Tbh it could be, I've had it that long as a paid app I honestly couldn't tell you the difference between the free and paid other than the batch restores.

Lol yeah it's an option

And wifi further down the line :)

Ahh, as i said before i dont care about call logs etc but TiBu Pro is more than worth the asking price just for batch restore. Hit restore then let it run in the background while you go through the system settings to get things how you like them :)

Yatezy, Mikestony, thanks to your posts and screenshots I just discovered that actually I did have a backup of my call logs and sms in titanium :D

The only thing is that the restore of my old sms has overriden (instead of merging) my sms' I had sent/received since I did the upgrade to PA, but anyway I've only lost 5 days...

Now I should restore also the contacts, but there are two entries in Titanium:

- Contacts 4.3-eng.bi...t.20130915.060806
- Contacts Storage 4... CONTACTS/CALLS

Do you know which one should I restore, and do you know if there's an option to merge with the current contacts rather than override?

Cheers!

Hmmm, not exactly sure. :hmmmm:
My best educated guess would be "Contacts Storage 4... CONTACTS/CALLS" because it's in green...(system service with useful data)

However, I can't be 100% sure. :o
And just because I didn't read back thru this thread lol, do you have you contacts backed up to your google account? If so, you need not worry about backing up contacts (unless some are on your device rather than your google account?)

Yes I synched with Google. I will verify this, then will delete one contact from my phone, and do a restore from Titanium to see if the deleted contact restores back from the backup.

OK so I tried to restore the CONTACTS/CALLS entry, I got a warning that the package was backed up from a different ROM and that it may not work properly on PA. I ignored the warning and went ahead with the restore. Unfortunately PA's People application wouldn't recognise the restored contacts, and I had to revert back by synching with Google. I don't know if there's some other way to convert the pre-PA Titanium backup to make it readable by the PA ROM.

Tbh it's probably best to have it backed up by Google. There will be less chance of a conflict then as it'll just download them as a fresh install.

Hi, it' me again.

Can someone tell me the correct version of Gapps I have to use for pa_i9300-4.0-BETA3-20140120 from the link hereunder?

Goo.im Downloads - Browsing gapps

Will pa_gapps-full-4.3-20131102-signed.zip be compatible, or do I need to go into the 'older versions' link?

Thanks.
