Root [International] Overclocking a GS3

Ok so I bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 that's been rooted

model no gt-i9300
android ver 4.0.4
baseband ver i9300ddlea
kernel ver 3.0.15-671647-user
build no imm76d.i9300xxalf2

this is my first rooted phone and my question is what can I do with it? how do I go about overclocking it for instance? I downloaded set cpu but I don't want to adjust anything without prior knowledge I did knotice superuser in the apps if that helps.

Cpu apps wont do much mate. You need a custom kernel that supports overclocking.
First thing id do though is put on a newer version of android. 4.0 is really old now.
Have a look in the "international s3 all things root forum" :thumbup:
 
I'm a total nube when it comes to rooting, I bought one ready rooted so I don't have to do it lol, how do I go about updating now then? I need all the jargon simplified

the very first thing to do is make a full "nandroid" backup in recovery mate. What custom recovery do you have?
Then think about what type of rom you want and what android version.
Do you like samsung's "touchwiz" rom or would you prefer more of a stock android, Nexus type experience?
If you really like the touchwiz camera and the samsung features like multiwindow, s-apps etc then youll want a touchwiz based rom. If you want a nice smooth unlaggy phone youll want an aosp or cyanogen based rom.
Once you make your backup you can try what you want and if you dont like it, it takes 10minutes to restore the backup and go back to where you started.
making backups is the most important thing.
Also you should buy titanium backup pro app to make backing up and restoring apps easy :thumbup:
 
Just to point out, you can get a smooth unlaggy phone with a Touch wiz based ROM - funky's biased cos in his words he hates touch wiz :-).
 
I'm having trouble with the first stage, I've done 2 nandroid backups to sd card but they seam to have gone onto the phone memory, also ive noticed I cant move apps to sd either, starting to wonder if ive made a mistake buying a rooted phone.......
 
Ok. ive just worked out that I have touchwiz installed, is there a quicker way to just update the version of android or do I need to go through all the rooting steps?
 
Ok so im all backed up to ext sdcard plus titan backup for my apps, i'm thinking about installing neat rom, what are your views on this rom and what do I need to do first??
 
Good choice. Which one? The touchwiz one or aosp mate? I havent tried the aosp one yet but i will.
If you want touchwiz, try neat rom then put on a custom kernel if you want to overclock.
Thats you backed up so get flashing. The tw neat roms come with an aroma so download the rom and the aroma for it, boot into recovery, wipe cache, dalvik and data, flash the rom, flash the aroma and the aroma should take you through a set up process, reboot, download titanium and restore your apps :thumbup:
 
Neatrom has two main versions now - a touchwiz based rom and a new aosp based rom. I haven't tried the new aosp based neatrom but I thought the tw version was ok.

Basically though, now that you are backed up you can try both and see what you think!

What you need to do first is save the zip file to your phone. Then boot into your custom recovery. Wipe the phone (system, cache, dalvik cache). Depending on which recovery you are using, there might even be an all-in-one option that wipes all the necessary partitions for you to install a new rom. (There is in Philz)

Then you choose Install zip (either from sd or extsd, depending on where you saved the zip file.

When it's finished reboot!

Shiny new rom!

Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm just tried that but it didn't install, looked like everything was working but on reboot I though this all looks very familiar and sure enough it's still 4.0.4ics, it's on touch wiz at the mo so do I need to do something different to be able to install the asop version?
 
Hmm. Which custom recovery are you using? If you have Philz, you could do the New Rom wipe (can't remember what it's called exactly). Otherwise a more extreme solution would be to explicitly format the phone partitions which should leave you with absolutely nothing on your internal memory. Make sure you have your nandroid backups on your extsdcard if you are going to try this - as well as all photos or other personal data you might have on the internal memory.

In Philz recovery, the format options are under Mounts and Storage.
