Root [International] siyah kernel

Well the ROM picking and downloading part is not hard.
But to do a nandroid backup, go into your custom recovery (eg CWM or team win) and there should be a backup/restore option.
Just use the backup option and backup all of your partitions.
Then to wipe cache , there will also be an option on your recoveries main settings screen that says wipe cache.
To wipe the dalvik cache to flash a new kernel, go into the advanced settings under your custom recovery and in that menu there should be an option saying wipe dalvik cache.
Choose that if you want to wipe.

If you need more help or a little more specific details just pm me.

Its all your decision on which to choose.
But make sure to read all of the ROMs description to make sure it works on your firmware.
I usually pick based on what feature there are.
Like whether or not you like touch wiz ROMs or fully themed ROMs.
Or very stable and highly rated ROMs or new beta releases.
I usually go for speed and smoothness with nice features.
I used to not know a thing but stick with the forums and you'll learn pretty fast about basic ROM and kernel flashing and all kinds of tweaking.
See, you did a nandroid backup and that's a very good start for anybody who wants to learn about customizing rooted phones with custom ROMs.
Making a backup of everything important to you is the best way to start.
Its all good :D
You won't ruin your phone if you don't do anything you don't understand or without any guidance.

Kernel: XXEMC2

This is what i picked as it was the most recent...which is the one you used and would i be better off with that? i also was reading something about one that doesnt made ur phone say modified and change the binary no. someone please help to kno which is best to download lol i thought id done it then readin that as confused me haha x

my kernel is 3.0.31 1042335 now so which is the best...maybe siyah kernel? but is there an option to flash it using odin i didnt use that option before and may have made it harder for myself. thanks xxx

I use Siyah and its really nice. Especialy if you wana tweak things like processor speed, sound volume, charging current etc. You cant do that with the stock kernels  xxxxxxX lol

hey i used tht before and i couldnt use kies :( and need to restore things off it. i think i may just stay with this one lol xxxx

If you can, get used to flashing through CWM. This way you can flash things on the fly eg kernels, modems and ROM's. So for instance if you dont like the kernel you are using, like in this case, then you can flash back to the previous one you had :thumb:

Nice one that's good to know but the cwm I'm getting an error saying few things ave been disabled cos there's a newer one but I seem to be using a different recovery or somet x

How do i use cwm to flash and will it work still with error. I tried to download one with the kernel i downloaded but it wouldnt unzip x

You dont unzip the file. On clockwork you select "install zip", find the .zip file, its usualy near bottom of the list if you put at the root of the sd x

I should warn u though, use CWM at your own risk.. theres a chance of it bricking international s3s. Philz Recovery is safe. Lol youre having to learn a lot here eh :)

That's the CWM app in the app drawer that's saying that if I'm not mistaken?

To get to your recovery you can either go into the CWM app and boot into recovery there.

Or

Turn your phone off, hold Power + Volume Up + Home Button.

You'll be presented with a screen of options which you navigate using your volume buttons and the power button as an enter key. This is your recovery and you can clear your cache, dalvik cache and flash zips from here. Just be careful what you hit and you'll fine :thumb:

Hi

i really need help i have rooted my phone and ad siyah kernel on but i wanted to change it...so i put on the one i think should be for the phone originally (kernel version...3.0.31-1042335..im wanted help with putting new kernel on...i dont know if i have to reroot my phone but the cwm wont work as it disbled certain things due to me apparently using a different recovery and tht it should be used with cf-cwm v1.1 or newer. am i best just unrooting and putting everything back how it was or is there another easier way...i just want the rooted and everything like everyone else cos theres all these other things being flashed im not sure about.

thanks in advance xxx

thaanks all. i want to do it right now because i didnt the 1st time. should i unroot it and start from the start or can i sort this another way i dont wanna use cwm x

Tbh... i really hate when people ask for an opinion when it comes to flashing things lol because i always know the risk is there and (it hasnt happened yet but) imagine telling someone to do something with their smartphone (it could be the second most expensive thing they own) and the advice you gave, killed it!
Lol i couldnt live with that kinda guilt :p

ok so i my phone is rooted but what is philz then cos ive flashed it now my phone wont work on kies ...sayin hardware missing x

Kies is shit lol. U dont ever need kies once you go down the rooting/modifying route :)
When you turn phone off then power up holding in Power, Home and Volume Up keys until the samsung screen comes up, does it load into Philz?
