Is Apple going to steal the spotlight from Android? iPhone OS 4.0

minus the lack of games, my nexus one works just like that - actually better than what the iphone can do.

apple has a following, but so do a lot of things...twilight has a following, pokemon has a following, even hitler had a following. Apple has a following for 2 reasons:

1) people feel cool to be anti microsoft
2) people need to justify the overpriced cost they pay

Apples products are more expensive than its competition, but its not because they perform like they cost. Buy any apple product and I will buy a comparable product which performs the same or BETTER, for less money. Apple costs more because they are selling a name brand. Theres only one place to have the iphone os...and thats on the apple iphone, theres only one place to buy a computer thats running snow leopard and thats on a mac made by apple...thats the only reason why they are more expensive *cough*overpriced*cough*

Exactly. And not to mention the complete lack of compatibility. Iphone will die, just like mac os did. Just give it time.

I find it funny that apple has not had to deal with anti trust issues the way microsoft did, show me the person that wants to install mac OS on a PC? Just sounds ridiculous, its brainwashing similar to the hitler regime, you cannot convince an apple user that there is something better....even if their stuff is broken and non functional, it is really a degree of sillyness I cant find in any other name brand kudos to Apple!

People that use Apple products are just plain lazy. They want everything to be designed so they don't to have to think a lot (see Obama voters). Apple products are designed for pre-schoolers. Anyone older than 3 years old picks up and iPhone and feels really smart because they can use it.

Apple makes dumb/lazy people feel really smart.

Ok, let's leave politics out of this. This conversation already has enough controversy :)

Just giving a vivid example.

"I don't have to worry about paying my mortgage, putting gas in my car, sending email, or playing games on my phone. If I help Obama/Jobs they will help me".

I don't think that Apple's announcement of the iPhone OS 4.0 is going to hurt Android as much as it is going to hurt Palm & Windows Mobile. Android seems to be gathering support for THE alternative option to the iPhone, whereas Palm and Windows are more looked at like 3rd place devices.

Absolutely, yes, lest you underestimate the legions of the Apple cult following. I have friends who profess to HATE Apple with all their minds and bodies, but still carry an iPhone. There's an immense lure to their devices because of how well thought out they are. So yes, I believe it will steal the thunder of Android, which is one of the reasons why I felt like Google should have waited until the Mobile World Congress to announce the N1, instead of from Fountain View at CES.
@sooper_droid12: what you said is so very true.I fully agree!

The event was planned quite awhile ago, no way they could have known it would coincide with any software realease or launch from someone else.

I used to have the iphone, switched because my employer pays for my service, not with att, but i follow them still. The iphone truely is a wonderous machine. Way far ahead than anyone else. yes they were slow to add certain features, ie copy paste and mms. Also the 1 app at a time was a killer too. But that will change with 4.0 It will have multitasking as the new iphones will have laptop strength dual core chips.

Just pick up an iphone, and play need for speed, avatar, call of duty, or watch a movie or scroll thru menus, and browse the web with pinch and zoom. nothing works like it on earth.

apple has a following for a reason. Their products are very expensive, but they work and perform like they cost. People would not buy and stay with them if not.

Android has potential but no direction. The OS has splintered into I don't know how many levels and all apps have to be crammed into an already over taxed phone. Customer service is non existent with google. Try to get a rep from google on the phone.

If you are willing to be a guinea pig while google tries to decide if they really want to be in the mobile business market, and you want to hope the app developers decide to develope for the multitude of OS levels on a multitude of hardware and hope the carriers ,who probabaly really don't want to be in the software end of this game either, will want to keep pace and continue to support the updates for the devices..then you have a lot more patience then most.

I do like my HTC hero, it does what i need, barely. I am limited to the carrier my company uses to pick the handsets from, i pay for the device, they pay the service. So there may be more powerful devices that run android, just that I am not able to access them. It is disheartening to pay 600 for a device and it not perform like one, especially coming from the iphone.
are you by any chance work for apple?lol' I think you do.

correction, att has horrible 3g. Not the iphone.
@bbrosen: I have learned my lesson, always to remember, never, never to argue with a iphone users.(to them there is nothing wrong with the iphone, the next update is putting a 4 in front of the G))It's a waste of time.I am here to learn more abouut the androids not about the iphones.

you've hit the nail right on the head, but you're going to hurt alot of iphone users.I beleived 1/3 of iphone user are kids.
@Karuk

I look at the new iPhone OS the same as I look at all the Mac OS releases.

I personally do not care. I haven't even touched my iPod touch in months (got it as a present). I am just not an Apple person. Not an Apple hater, I am alledgedly working on getting Mac certified for work. I just never liked their anti-tinkering approach to things.

So, the new iPhone could pee coffee and poop out Jelly donuts, and my reaction would be the same. "That's nice for you folks. Enjoy. I'll be over here doing my thing"

After it's all said and done, the press conference is for the new apple tablet, just heard it on fox news.

not sure why all the Apple hatred, I just know how well their stuff works. statements like Apple is for snobs and lazy people are just childish. Apple is not for geeks who like to tinker, pure and simple and they focus more on speed power and ease of use. I also do not hate windows or Bill gates either, but it is dissapointing for a lot of users who came from that environment to spend the same amount of money and get less then what we had. Less customer service, less user experience. It is nice to change walls and have themes, if your a kid, which a lot of this stuff is really for I am sure, but I use mine for work, no one sees my phone but me, i don't pass it around to my buddies, I need it to work hard and work fast as well as be intuitive. I do not like not having the choice to upgrade the OS being determined by the handset maker as well as my carrier, i do not like to tinker all day to keep it running smooth and fast and reliable, ie soft resets, task killers, I do not like having crap run in the background i have no control over.

Iphone and Apple are not perfect, but no one company/product is. If you do not want to be adult about it fine, its the internet, say what you want. I griped about things to apple as well, but not the basics, like emailing and scrolling contacts, freezing up, lagging, slow as molasses. Common features were missing ie copy paste, mms and multitasking, multitasking was a big one for me. copy paste and mms not so much but for a lot of others it was.

everyone has different needs or desires in their devices. I am with android, I want it to succeed, but people need to learn to take criticism on both sides.

lack of a universal desktop program and software and hardware standards hurts too.

Or.....is this a chance for Apple fans to see what happens when you have multi tasking on a phone? Could the iPhone actually lose it's snappiness? Time will tell, but I can't believe that Apple can just do an OS update and add all this new features and what not and still be as snappy.

I was thinking the same thing...maybe the new hardware can handle it but what happens to the 3g/3gs phones when they're hit with true multi-tasking? Time will tell.

It sounds to me like the rumored apple software upgrade is only going to bring it more in line with some of the Pro's android has going for it right now. As I see it in two year's time Android will have continued to develop, and become a much more stable platform, with a uch larger number of well developed stable applications. I also see phones like the current Nexus One (high end, Android powered devices with very powerful processors) becoming the norm and not the exception. The main thing I'm waiting for is an android powered phone with large amounts of on board system memory (supplemented as it is now with SD cards - standard Sd would be nice, instead of micro sd), very fast processor (or parallel processors), the ability to place calls or navigate/operate the device using voice activated bluetooth, the ability to truly turn off individual programs from within the program (no need for a separate task killer because the program continues running in the background), and including some of the more popular applications with devices sold (for example a proper task killer, google search, Sweeterhome as the standard desktop, and reliable widgets for weather, batterylife etc.). Add more powerful batteries (for longevity), hi end LED screens and a section to the marketplace (make it searchable on your PC) where you can buy hardware and accessories, and you'll have monster phones that IMHO will be far more flexible and powerful than anything apple will be making available. That plus it would make the perfect foundation for a tablet with pretty much the same, but expanded specs.

Screwed!! I guess. I argued with an iphone user few weeks ago on droid forum and I did mentioned iphone can't do multi-tasking and few other things.
He came back with a answer that iphone don't see the need for multi-tasking,just like saying I like to buy a mac without multi-tasking.It's fruitless to argue with an iphone user.
Btw, I am an owner of 2 iphones (3g and 3Gs)I should have sold my iphones early last yrs ($600) and I be lucky to get $200 for it on e-bay now.The e-bay(CL) have been flooded with iphones and I wonder why??
IF, apple does came out with full multi-tasking,how many iphone users will switch and start bragging about it??? Multi-tasking WANNABE!! lol'

it is dissapointing for a lot of users who came from that environment to spend the same amount of money and get less then what we had. Less customer service, less user experience.

apple users spend more money and get less than what PC/Android people have. I think you got that mixed up. Apple only has the customer care over its competition.

How can you disagree with the statement that apple products are for the lazy and then go on to say something like this? Thats pretty much the definition of lazy.

If your talking business the Iphone is nowhere close to a legitimate business phone (maybe give it a slight edge with their apps to help it along); If you want all the things you mentioned the Iphone would be in maybe top 5 and android would be bottom 10 right now. If your serious about business only then you would likely have a blackberry or a WinMo phone.

Ill gladly admit my N1 or 3Gs is not the best phone for business; but i use them because im a geek and will make them work for me. Most of the serious sales guys I know do not use an iphone or android.
