Google, too, has indicated that it wants to make the next (3.0) version of Android more polished and user friendly. Industry observers have speculated that manufacturers like HTC will make fewer alterations on their Android phones as a result. Bamford, however, says he doesn’t expect Google’s tweaks, which are scheduled to debut before the end of the year, to affect his work. “Google may focus more on improving the user interface on the stock Android [software], but I don’t think they’ll preclude manufacturer customization,” he explains.
In fact, Bamford is full of ideas on how to improve Sense by adding new experiences and evolving others. The current version of the software is people-centric, emphasizing the aggregation of social feeds and photos of people deemed important to users. In the future, Sense will also make discovering and sharing media–music, video, mobile applications and books–easier, says Bamford.
But I'm really hoping that we have landscape mode with the homescreen.
Guys, forgive my ignorance, but what is Gingerbread? I keep seeing it but have no idea what it is. Thanks.

the name 'icecream' has been leaked as the actual name of it, so your guess is in line with what we know so far
I'm really interested to see what gingerbread will look like on our Evos.

So are we going to have to choose between 2.3 and the new sese ui? if i had to pick one over the other i think i'd want the new UI. when does maps 5.0 come out?
HTC says it wants to sell 60 mil phones next year. The only way they can do that is to offer a choice of with and without Sense. The best bet would be to have Sense that can be turned on/off. 60 mil is three times what their 2010 sales target was.
None of us here know that for fact - I think.
What we do know is that so far, HTC has been incredibly responsive to supporting the EVO, especially compared to other brands' treatment of their customers.
And lot of your Android brethren are waiting on 2.2 - and in the case of one very capable handset - have been given a 2.2 incremental update that the maker just conveniently tagged as 2.3, with a warning that it's their 2.3, not Android 2.3.
While others are playing 2.2 games, HTC is pressing forward. Remember, we've had official 2.2 support for more than 4 months - that's 4 months longer than a lot of handsets.
Time will tell if I'm right or wrong, but I'm stoked that ultimately, it won't be an either/or kinda deal.
Great if they arrive together, great if they come staggered - so long as we end up with both in a timely fashion.
History:
1st phone with official release of 2.2 - Google Nexus 1
1st non-Google phone with 2.2 - HTC EVO 4G
1st phone with official release of 2.3 - Google Nexus S (pre-order status)
1st non-Google phone with 2.3 - ???
I'm betting it'll be the Evo and with the new Sense.
In fact, in the fine tradition of our Froyo predictions - I'll say before the end of the first full week in February - so I say no later than Feb 8, '11.
so you think by feb 8, 2011 we should have 2.3 and new UI ? Gosh i hope you're right!
That prediction is the result of serving flying monkeys good coffee - but I've been right before.
Also - I've been wrong.
That said - I think it's very possible.
An interesting PS I just ran across -

Interesting if true - will HTC become the defining hardware standard for Android?
I think the new Sense UI along with Gingerbread, along with the large screen on the Evo and dual cameras will turn heads, again.
The Evo as a design concept may be a market influence for much longer than any of us thought.
