Is it just me?

argedion

The TechnoFrog
Is it just me or do others seem to get frustrated when someone comes into the forums "Needing" help you give them the best advice or help that you can and they never come back and post anything else again. Not even well that didn't work or hey thanks that did it. I mean nothing. No word what so ever. I'm not even sure why this bothers me still its happend several times but it still does. I just wanted to know if it bothers others as well or am I the only one? Don't get me wrong it doesn't bother me enough to make me stop helping but still it bothers me.

Moved to the lounge since this isn't Android related.

I hear where you are coming from but like chanchan said you have no clue if they read your reply, it worked, and they didn't have the thought to reply back. Also someone in the future may have the same problem and find your reply via google search or our search. So your efforts are not in vain. :D

I agree. I always get that feeling when replying to someone who made their account that month... because I don't know if they made the account to just ask that one question... (which they *could* have just asked over and over...)

But luckily, I seem to find that people stick around a bit. And I like to think that if they don't reply, it's because they found the advice less than a minute after I posted it, but already logged off. And of course, the advice worked.

;)

Well, usually such posters post across all available venues inclusive of Forums, blogs ,irc and whatever/wherever they can post .After they get an answer ,they just go away and dont even look/check back . They continue to post on whichever forum they think they got the answer . On an average 3 out of 5 first time posters dont come back .
Kinda annoying I admit :)

I'll agree that it's annoying, I just think most people don't come back because they don't want to hang out with a bunch of geeks like us. :p Most people I know find forums extremely boring, once they get an answer to their questions they have no want/reason to come back.

Yeahha nailed it. I've had several of these threads and once in a while another user will hit the thanks and respond letting me know they helped. So your efforts are definitely not in vain.

Well I always like to help out those first time posters even if they don't respond. Another benefit is to welcome them to the forums and come across as helpful and not condescending regardless of how simple or stupid their question is. I feel like it's all about good karma.

Not as annoying as when people post threads with subjects like "Help Desperately Needed!" or "Is it just me?" and you can't determine what they're actually asking about without opening the thread.

As I say on a board I moderate, we know you need help, or you wouldn't have posted to begin with.

Well not everyone who posts...even for their first post...needs help...some just want to say "Thanks for the site...it has helped me in the past" or "I just got an android phone looking forward to spending time here" and lots of the like to say "Look I is spam buy your phone enhancement pills here..." all of those are not looking for help...there are just a few examples.

We also do not have any rules about how someone must title their thread so "HALP!!!11" is just as good as "Bricked my phone trying to flash XYZ rom using CWM" ;)

I know. But since the question was whether we find it annoying, I was just providing my opinon. :) Phandroid staff are certainly entitled to have different policies!

My point though was that, IMO, a thread subject should ideally give people a specific ideas to what the contents are in regards to. Why say "Help!!!" if you can say, "My DX isn't receiving email"?, y'know? It just comes across to me as someone trying to post as quickly as possible and actually hindering themselves and wasting other readers' time.

At my RL job people will often send us emails that almost literally say "Please reset my password", and it's completely unhelpful and actually wastes time. What system do you need your password reset for? What's your ID? If they took the time to include that originally they would save both themselves and us time.

Sorry, guess I'm being a bit ranty. :p

It doesn't really bother me, as long as I did the best I could to help. Anything I get (thanks, replies, etc.) is just a bonus IMO.

 and IMO it is more helpful when someone actually makes their title somewhat related to what they are posting about when they are seeking support...You can't tell much from "Help" as you pointed out. But we don't have anything saying that a thread title can't be "Help" Also often when we do see something like that the person may be in distress...say they tried to root and now think they bricked their phone...and panicking so that is understandable...many of them may have never been on a forum as a active member before and many will leave once their problem is resolved...

Yet you CHOOSE to respond. I didn't twist your arm or any thing. Besides you can't please everyone. Everyone has a right to their opinion. I really just ranting a bit. As far as needing help is that the only reason why you think people post? I am so glad to be part of a forum where nothing could be further from the truth. We post for all kinds of reasons hey I've even seen a post for your shoes over here talk about laid back. This place is just pure awesomeness

Well I actually think your title is fine for this thread. It catches attention enough to get people to click it :D.

I have seen those only support/on topic forums  I have a hard time trying to stay on topic...tried to join one of those type forums...found that out and :vroam:

I think everyone here tries to keep AF a fun, friendly, informative, and downright awesome place to spend time

I couldn't agree more if people gave you the correct information to begin with then your job would be much easier. I have to say that I do find as a pet peve. However here its not a job this is my play time and this is Where I choose to be. The title was made on purpose as to catch readers attention. Yes I did put a few minutes of thought into it.

I hear ya I have ADD as well

There's the other side of the coin - a legitimate question that is never answered.
You don't know if there's no answer because:

No one really knows an answer
The question is too trivial for anyone to bother with
The question isn't interesting enough

I've had questions that have not been answered. I've searched through Google and found that others have posted the same question - along with no answer.

Well that is true...

No one really knows an answer...kinda hard to answer these...

The question is too trivial for anyone to bother with...I try to answer trivial questions regardless...makes me feel smarter ;)

The question isn't interesting enough...I am not sure the difference between this and trivial questions...

I think most people will stay away from a question they don't know the answer to for a couple of reasons 1 is they don't want to steer people wrong and 2 they themselves do not want to appear as they are dumb when someone comes in and corrects them. As far as trivial questions I don't feel there is such a thing. I do my best to answer questions that I have answers to. I don't answer ones I don't have answers to because really I'm just wasting the OP's time and giving them some false hope by having a reply. (they see someone replied and go oh great someone has an answer) As far as interesting enough I'm not sure what you mean by that.

While it is nice to be thanked for my efforts it is not necessary. It is nice to get a pat on the back and yes it helps stroke my ego its a security issue. Lets put the truth were it lies. I'm honest enough to call it as it is. I am here and I help because thats what I enjoy doing I will always try to help as long as I am able however If I do not have an answer or cannot find an answer then no I'm not going to waste your time. I would rather have someone who is more inept to deal with your question answer it. I love this forum because you find what you need here when you need it.

Zuben you bring up a good point though we as users need to make sure if a post has a legitimate question that has no answer then we need to get it to the attention of the guides and mods of the site after all that is part of their job to make sure those types of questions don't go unanswered

This is why I hang out in the Nexus Watering Hole so much. Lots of great help without having to start a new thread for each question.
