Root is rooting allowed by Virgin?

my phone is rooted... I'm having some trouble with calling some phone numbers so I called Virgin for tech help. they had me type in ##847446# and this was supposed to bring up a special screen but it didin't. She was perplexed. I was wondering if it was because the phone is rooted and has a new OS, different than the stock version that came on the phone. I didn't know if I'd get in trouble for mentioning this to her or not.

then she said to find the "activate phone" app, which was not there. guessing that also disappeared when I rooted.

am I allowed to mention to Virgin that I rooted the phone?

did I lose tech support when I rooted?

thanks

Do not tell them you are rooted.
if you flashed CM9/7 all those apps and hidden menus are gone. They aren't going to ever work with cyanogenmod.
To get it working, get a froyo rom, like harmonia 2

Thanks for bringing this subject up.
These types of issues are exactly why I'm apprehensive to root and intalling a custom rom.
My intention for rooting is to gain control over apps that want permissions to access my personal information, contacts, phone state and location, full internet access etc.
When I flash and add a custom rom I want all the functions the manufacture put on the LG OPV.

I remember Sammy said I'd loose the mic button fuction, I can live without it as I never use that button anyway. But WiFi, Camera, bluetooth 3G (of course) are a must.

.... sammy please telll me the froyo rom has everything working?
Thanks

And thanks garybeck.

If you have rooted and flashed new ROMs I am comfortable passing along this post I found. The Wonderful ROMs of Our Amazing Optimus V! 9/18/12

It lists known ROMs. There is one listed that is made to give back activation. I do not know the quality or usefulness of said ROM so please use it at your own risk. I would ask here first before I used it. I am sure someone with more knowledge may have heard of it.

If you do decide to use it, follow good flashing practices to mitigate the risk of bricking.

Good Luck

It is not illegal to root your phone.

When you root your phone you void your warranty (VM gives a 30 day warranty and LG gives a one year warranty)

You will also loose all right to Tech Support.

LG will fix a broke phone that has been rooted, but at your cost.

If you flash a Froyo Rom (or your stock ROM that you backed up before flashing a custom ROM) then you will have the activate app.
The Harmonia ROM, Harmonious Bumblebee, and Bumblebee Resurrected would be the best Froyo ROM's to use as they will work with all screen versions of the V.

I usually have a Froyo ROM backed up just for the use of the activate app if needed.

I hope this has answered your Questions.

ok, I'm on a learning curve here. I'm real good with PCs but new to all this phone stuff with roots, roms, .... at the risk of sounding stupid... I rooted my phone just by following the directions, without really understanding what I did. When you flash a rom, is it like putting a new OS on a PC, but keeping your data? If so it sounds like you're saying you can keep multiple backup versions of OS's on the phone, and fairly easily switch from one to the other, and this is "flashing a ROM" correct? So I could flash a Froyo ROM to have the activation app reappear and get tech support, and then flash back to the IHO Backside ROM I have now? sorry i'm new to this. thanks.

(note the only reason I rooted is because I my internal memory was full and I need to move more apps to the card).

You can have as many backups (nandroid backups) as your SD card will hold. They are stored in the clockworkmod folder of the SD card.
All you need to do to restore one is wipe and format everything necessary to flash a ROM (the recovery uses the flash_image to accomplish this, hence flashing a ROM, or backup, or any zip) then go to the backup and restore section of the recovery and choose restore. Then just pick the Date/Time stamp of the one you want.
When you root and install a custom ROM the only one that can be held accountable for problems with the phone are you. The rooted user is 90% of the time at fault for the problems the phone has. If it ain't working flash a different ROM.

Covering up the truth to receive something denied, for doing something that is against VM's TOS, is still lying and is not acceptable here.
It also cannot be discussed here.

The only use for a rooted user to use the activation app is to restore a borked data service, or establish data service after a restore from a brick.

Or to, maybe, activate the phone on your account after months of using it wifi only. Or reactivating it when vm does something weird and screws it up. Or, well, lots of reasons.

Rooting is when you modify the system (usually with a root exploit program) to allow you to gain root access to all the files and folders in that system.
VM doesn't want you to do this as they will loose control over the ability to keep you from using apps that will allow you to use up data at a faster rate and use more data in a month than they intended.
This doesn't break any copy write infringement laws, just voids there's and LGs warranty.

Flashing is the method used to install a zipped package (ROMs, themes, etc.) from a custom recovery. This can only be accomplished with the use of the flash_image that is the /system/bin of the phone.

They also don't want to be stuck trying to provide support for a phone that has potentially been screwed up by the user because of modifications he/she made to the OS. I'm guessing they also don't want to be liable if a non-system app gains root access and transmits sensitive data, etc.
