Congrats on taking the plunge! Sense is the reason I would never even consider the EVO or Incredible, it really bogs the system down. That said, the Droids hardware is definitely outdated and bound to be a little slower. Also, Sense would significantly delay receiving any OTA updates in the future.
I don't know if you are interested in rooting, but take a look at the root section and stickied FAQ posts. IMO a rooted Droid is the best phone on the market still. The dev support is incredible and new tweaks are coming out all the time. It honestly makes it into a brand new phone, especially running Froyo now at 1 ghz or higher.
My wife owns a Droid also, and I would always ask her if she wanted me to root it and she is one of those types who won't even care to learn more about it, just flatly refuse things because she doesn't like change, or electronics at all.
Yesterday I finally got her to play around with my Droid for a while and now I am rooting it on Saturday lol. She was very jealous/impressed with screen transition speed specifically, I run it at 1ghz and use ADWLauncher set at 0 delay for switching screens and it is literally instantaneous.
Any, that's my story for the day. Enjoy the Droid, I am sure with all the support it receives it will be a very viable phone for quite a while, and by then we can all upgrade to the next great phone.
