Is the Droid still worth getting?

The Droid X and Droid 2 don't seem to be significant updates over the Droid. It makes me wonder why they're even being released. Motorola has said they're planning a "super" smartphone to hopefully be released this year. Why wouldn't they ditch the half-assed Droid X and Droid 2 updates and just make this super phone the Droid 2?

I'd say wait for the Droid 2. But it's possible if you wait too long they will change the data plans and you will not be able to get an unlimited data plan anymore. So idk. ):

My Droid came from Walmart. I have had two replacements(not Walmart's fault) and both have gone through the standard Verizon procedures. Once sold, the phone, contract, and insurance(Asurion of course) are in Verizon's hands. There are nice benefits of buying from Walmart.. if you choose to change phones within 30 days, there are no questions asked, and no restocking fee. Walmart also offers the phone at a lower price with none of the "rebate debit card" hassles.

Though their selection may be skimpier than a Verizon outlet or maybe even a Best Buy outlet/etc., I prefer to get my phones from Walmart for the above reasons.

Got the Droid yesterday. Kinda pricey with a 1 year contract, but oh well. I like it much more than the Evo I'm returning.

It's just a little bit slower than the Evo (should have been a lot slower, but Sense dragged the Evo down a lot), but overall feels like a much better phone. Either way, I heard rumors that Intel is trying to shove a 2Ghz CPU into a phone by the end of the summer. So with those advances it's more logical to buy the better quality phone over the faster one.

Congrats on taking the plunge! Sense is the reason I would never even consider the EVO or Incredible, it really bogs the system down. That said, the Droids hardware is definitely outdated and bound to be a little slower. Also, Sense would significantly delay receiving any OTA updates in the future.

I don't know if you are interested in rooting, but take a look at the root section and stickied FAQ posts. IMO a rooted Droid is the best phone on the market still. The dev support is incredible and new tweaks are coming out all the time. It honestly makes it into a brand new phone, especially running Froyo now at 1 ghz or higher.

My wife owns a Droid also, and I would always ask her if she wanted me to root it and she is one of those types who won't even care to learn more about it, just flatly refuse things because she doesn't like change, or electronics at all.

Yesterday I finally got her to play around with my Droid for a while and now I am rooting it on Saturday lol. She was very jealous/impressed with screen transition speed specifically, I run it at 1ghz and use ADWLauncher set at 0 delay for switching screens and it is literally instantaneous.

Any, that's my story for the day. Enjoy the Droid, I am sure with all the support it receives it will be a very viable phone for quite a while, and by then we can all upgrade to the next great phone.

I'm just worried about buying it from Walmart, such as if the warranty still goes through Verizon or if i have to go through walmart to get it fixed. Any input on that?
Manufacturer's warranty is manufacturer's warranty. Walmart doesn't warranty the Droid.

Unless I was going to root it, or I wanted a physical keyboard, I would not get a Droid. That being said, once rooted the Droid is still the best phone Verizon has and possibly the best Android phone out right now.

If you can wait for the new Motorola phones I would do so as they look pretty nice. The Droid X (Coming out July 19) compares well to the EVO other than no forward facing camera. The Droid 2 should be very similar to the Droid except better in every way but that will be coming out some time after the Droid X - no release date for it yet.

+1

I am no expert, but I just picked up my Droid two days ago. Love it. So much better than the Eris I was using before that. Its powerful, root-able, over clockable, and will run Froyo. In my mind that makes it totally worth the $99 I spent at Best Buy.

I think I'm gona hold off on rooting for a little bit. It would be a shame if I bricked the phone now. Otherwise, what can I expect from rooting? The only reason I'd want to root is to remove the bloatware, which the Droid doesn't have a lot of. Over-clocking the CPU to 1Ghz would be nice, but how would that affect the battery life?

from the research that I have done, the ROMs are a major player in the decision to root. Almost every ROM has wonderful goodies that make the Android experience 10,000 times better. Read through the All Things Root section and you will see what I mean.

Also, from my research, the people who overclock their Droids seem to have better battery life. Also, please remember that unless you set the min and max at 1GHz, the Droid will only go up to the 1GHz max when needed. Otherwise, it will stay fairly low, especially when not being used.

Also... I just realized that the EVO has a 2.5mm headphone jack. Why!? Every Android phone and its mother has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack and they made the biggest Android phone on the market have a smaller headphone jack.

You're mistaken. The Evo has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

Bricking is so hard to do it's not even funny. You would almost have to try to brick it. And even if you did brick it there is a thread http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/47349-now-you-can-live-without-fear-bricking.html. And the ROMs that the devs cook up are efficient on battery even with overclocking. A rooted 2.2 droid is the fastest phone available right now.
