Root Is there a step by step method to root EVO 4g 2.3.5 that would work for a rookie?

I am trying to install it now, but according to ROM Toolbox I am not officially rooted, so my browser won't let me move the PC36100 file or open the zip file after I download it. Or maybe there is a step I am missing?

Don't use third party programs to flash do it from recover. Always wipe really well between ROMS. Recovery is much better for this kind of work

I really appreciate the time everyone is taking to help me, but you lost me on recovery. I cannot successfully download a recovery file. Care to send me another link and i will try it again. I am supposed to download it onto my device correct? The last one I got from this forum would not save to my device and yeilded a message that I didn't have permission to use this file. See the previous notes in this thread.

ok there are two ways to do this. you can use your computer and download it then transfer the file to the sd card or you can use the phone to download it. it will download the file to the download folder on your card. you can then use the file manager to copy or cut the file and then past the file on to the card. do not move it to another folder. it needs to be on the card.

Tina try this Amon RA remove the last part of the filename so all that is left is PC36IMG.zip (Make sure there is only 1 .zip and not 2 windows will not show extensions for known file extensions. Once dl'd to the ROOT(Very top level of SDCARD not in any folders) of the SDCARD. Go to the Hboot screen choose fastboot and allow it to find when it ask if you want to update push the volume up button when its done it will ask you if you want to reboot push the volume down button for no and then push volume down to move the highlight to recovery and then the power button and allow the phone to go into recovery.

Thanks Gamblor, if I could Thank you three times for this post I would for all the info you provided. Is there a custom recovery that you or anyone else here can recommend? And I am insatiably curious, so please just tell my why you like it because it will save me the time of asking YET ANOTHER question lol! BTW: Does the version of Gingerbread I am in determine what ROM version I should select? I am a bit confused as so many ROMS specify 2.3.3 or 2.3.5. Right now, I think I should stay away from ICS since it disables the front facing camera. I think I read somewhere that some ROMS enable GoogleTalk and even provide 4G LTE. Sprint doesn't have that where I live, but could a ROM actually have the ability to turn that feature on when my phone only has standard 4G capability?

I wouldn't worry too much about the Android version in ROMs...at least not minor changes. You'll want a gingerbread ROM as your daily ROM though. It's not that the ICS ROMs disable the front camera or 4g, they flat out don't work because nobody has the appropriate drivers for them. It will be difficult to get them working too since HTC isn't releasing an ICS update for this phone, so there is nothing to start with. Everything would have to be reverse engineered and that probably won't happen.

As for LTE, that isn't possible with this phone because it doesn't have the LTE antenna in it. Instead, it has a Wimax antenna which is Sprint's current 4G technology (which they are about to move away from). There is a new EVO LTE coming out soon but that is an entirely different phone.

I really recommend you get Amon RA 2.3 and then install MikG 3.11 from themikmik.com. After that you can start taking backups and playing with other ROMs if you want. A word of caution however, flashing new ROMs becomes weirdly addictive. I did it for quite some time before realizing I always came back to MikG because it is awesome.
