Root Issues restoring nandroid backups

I have been having issues not being able to restore my nandroid backups. Heck maybe I am doing it wrong, I don't know that I have ever actually gone back to one of my nandroids. But I have been trying lately, had problems with TWRP and Amon Ra. Currently on Amon Ra 2.3, when I try to restore it says something like "oops a problem occurred, check the recovery log". How do I check the recovery log and any idea what the problem could be?

Whats the process for restoring a backup? Do you wipe first(I have tried wiping and not wiping)? Do you just choose the backup file and tell it to restore?

Last question, is Rom toolbox a reliable way to manage backups until I get the recovery figured out? And do rom tollbox nandroid work with recovery?

Thanks

ok Not sure why you are getting the error. First thing that I would suggest is to check your sd card and make sure there are no issues with it. In windows just do this:
chkdsk x: /f
in a dos box of course.
Don't know where the recovery log is you could try doing a search for it

Normally I do wipe don't know that its needed as the process should wipe and restore.

Not sure about toolbox. I always did recovery. I have had some nandroids that i could not restore but only a couple.

did you re-name your nandroid backups? that sound like a common error and it happens when the nandroid backups are named incorrectly. make sure that you do not have any spaces or weird symbols in the name.

also in amon ra, i believe the recovery logs can be moved to the sd card and that option is found in the advanced option. once moved use a file manager or your computer to check the logs.

and restoring nandroid backups do not need a wipe before restoring. but it does not hurt doing it. it is just not necessary.

never heard of or tried rom toolbox. i would do everything manually myself.

I will check my SD card when I get a chance. Can I do that via USB or do I need to actually use a card reader?

I did not rename the files. I did see I could move the log to SD, just wasn't sure if that was the easiest or only way to access it. I will check that out too.

Heres a link to a write up about rom toolbox. I normally like to do everything in the most basic way possible too. Adding in extra programs often makes things worse. But this got pretty good praise.

Control nearly everything root with ROM Toolbox

The only times a Nandroid didn't work for me it was when I did this,

Made a Nandroid, loaded new Rom, Wiped, flashed new Rom. Then tried to go back to the Nandroid and it would give the "oops" error.

If I, Loaded new Rom, Made Nandroid, wiped, flash new Rom. Then it would work if I wanted to restore.

I don't know why it made a difference.

Not sure I understand. What did you make a nandroid of before you loaded a rom in the first scenario?

I wiped, flashed a rom, made a nandroid, rebooted into the rom. Rebooted to recovery and tried to restore the nandroid, thats when I get the error.

something is not right then. how much room do you have on your card? you could be running out of room. how many nandroid backups do you have? you might want to move them to your computer or delete them.

I was thinking this same thing. *lol* The errors I had were because the Nandroid became corrupt some how. It happend 2 times. The first time it would get to the bootanimaion and just repeat it forever. The second time was the same exact thing.

SO after you flashed the Rom did you reboot or make a Nandroid before rebooting? If so you didn't make a Nandroid of anything.

These are the steps I had to follow or else it didn't work for me,

1 -Phone completely on any rom (#1) being used.
2-Connect USB and transfer new rom (#2) to sd card
3-Reboot to recovery
4-Make a Nandroid of Rom #1
5-Wipe Dalvik cache, cache, and data + run superwipe file
6-Flash new Rom #2
7-Reboot phone and check out new rom. #2
8-reboot to recovery
9-restore Nandroid of Rom #1

My Nandroids are kind of big as I always back up the three that are checked off in Amon Ra 2.3 plus I add Wimax everytime. So they will be 5 or 6 rows of white dots.

If this is what you are doing then I don't know what to tell you. If I did step 4 before step 2 then my Nandroids wouldn't restore. I don't know why it just wouldn't.

perhaps your version of recovery is somehow somewhat hosed? :o

maybe just use the changing recoveries method to put amon ra back on your phone again, with a fresh download/install of it?

I believe you have to reboot after the new ROM so it can build everything before you make your first nandroid.

Flash the ROM, reboot, restart into recovery, make nandroid

Edit: Nater beat me to it, didnt fully read the thread just stopped when I saw the problem

I am back on Amon Ra 2.3. Just did a bunch of rom installs today. Installed the rom, rebooted, set up some settings and accounts, rebooted to recovery, did a nandroid backup of the rom. Wiped everything 3 times, flashed a new rom, rebooted, set up accounts and settings, rebooted to recovery, made a backup of that rom.

Try to restore any of the nandroids I made today and "Oops...something went wrong". This is very frustrating.

I have plenty of space left on my card, not sure the exact amount, but it has to be several GB's.

Okay, so i tried to check out my SD card. Put it in my laptop and it did ask to do a scan and repair, which I let it do, but it found no errors. So then I decided I would copy the contents to my laptop, and reformat the card. Well when I try to copy the contents of the SD Card, i get a pop up saying "Please insert the last disk of the multi volume set and click ok to continue."

Clicking ok just continuously gives me the popup. Any ideas what this is?

Nvm, seems to be some sort of issue with autoplay. Shut that off and it appears to be working now. I have a 16GB card with over 6GB free, so as I said, I am not out of space on the card. Hopefully this format helps.

Looks like it may be working after the format. thanks for the help
