Yeh, you're in Cambodia aren't you? I can't really sign up with them either...LOL
Yes, and I return to the States every year for a few months, but being over here and buying equipment outright and using it on AT&T and T-Mobile for a few months has opened my eyes to the scam that a subsidized phone is. Hence, even if I were to return to the US permanently, I'd still not become the minion of some large carrier promising me a

Subsidised and customised, something from Verizon or Sprint is likely to have NFL and NASCAR crap installed, which can't be removed without rooting. Probably part of the subsidy kickbacks. And then there's the locking as well, as well as being CDMA. BTW do they use CDMA in Cambodia. We have one CDMA carrier here, China Telecom.

I'm same situation really, live in China but go to UK every summer for a month.

They did use one of the largest 5" phones to base that claim on though ;)
But it will be quite reasonably sized:

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 5.7"
151.2 x 79.2 x 8.3 mm (5.95 x 3.12 x 0.33 in)

Lenovo Vibe Z 5.5"
149.1 x 77 x 7.9 mm (5.87 x 3.03 x 0.31 in)

Oppo Find 7a 5.5"
152.6 x 75 x 9.2 mm (6.01 x 2.95 x 0.36 in)

LG Optimus G Pro 5.5"
150.2 x 76.1 x 9.4 mm (5.91 x 3.00 x 0.37 in)

OnePlus One 5.5" seems to fit in here somewhere
~154 x ~74 x ?.? mm (~6.06 x ~2.91 x ?.? in)

Sony Xperia Z1 5.0"
144 x 74 x 8.5 mm (5.67 x 2.91 x 0.33 in)

HTC One M8 5.0"
146.4 x 70.6 x 9.4 mm (5.76 x 2.78 x 0.37 in)

Samsung Galaxy S5 5.1"
142 x 72.5 x 8.1 mm (5.59 x 2.85 x 0.32 in)

LG G2 5.2"
138.5 x 70.9 x 8.9 mm (5.45 x 2.79 x 0.35 in)

Nexus 5 5.0"
137.9 x 69.2 x 8.6 mm (5.43 x 2.72 x 0.34 in)

Samsung Galaxy S4 5.0"
136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm (5.38 x 2.75 x 0.31 in)

"Reasonable" is in the eye of the beholder (or the hand of the holder ;)). That's a reasonable size for a 5.5" device, but big enough to rule me out.

A 5.5" 16:9 display is 68.5mm wide. That's why they chose the Z1 when saying it will fit in the format of a 5" device: with a bezel the size of the G2's (3mm) that gives you about the width of the Z1, but they'd need an order of magnitude smaller to fit the N5's form factor.

To each his own. It's only ~6mm (.236") wider than the 4.7" phone you carry now, with a screen 20.3mm (0.8") larger diagonally. As you say, whether it's too big for any one person is a matter of taste, but it's a great engineering achievement nonetheless.

Truth be told, I half-way agree with you. I'd rather have a 5.2" display in a chassis the size of my S4, kinda like the LG G2.

Oh yes, it's a nice size for a 5.5" device. But I'll never be in the market for a > 5" device (I'd prefer 4.5" really).

I'm interested in how it fares though - it's a neat project.

It's kindof amazing, but the OnePlus One will have slightly thinner bezels than the Oppo Find 7a.

But if the Find 7a specs are any indication, it will be a long little doggie:

Oppo Find 7a 5.5"
152.6 x 75 x 9.2 mm (6.01 x 2.95 x 0.36 in)

The Lenovo Vibe Z is really short-looking for a 5.5" phone with capacitative buttons, checking in at 149.1mm/5.87" tall.

Lenovo Vibe Z 5.5"
149.1 x 77 x 7.9 mm (5.87 x 3.03 x 0.31 in)

Without capacitative buttons, the OnePlus One could be a few mm shorter, but not much, especially if it has stereo speakers which will take up some room. If they make their goal of fitting a 5.5" display into a 5.0" chassis, then it really shouldn't be taller than about 145mm/5.7" but it seems like just under 150mm/5.9" is more likely.

With an aluminum body a little bigger than the HTC One M8 and slightly larger batter, I don't see it weighing less than 165 g (5.82 oz) and probably closer to 170 g (6.0 oz).

one more it should be compared to: Samsung NOTE3 with 5.7in display

151.2 x 79.2 x 8.3 mm (5.95 x 3.12 x 0.33 in).

from the picture of 1+1 display is taller/longer than normal. which makes it not as wide.

I wouldn't think that waiting 1-2 years is necessary, but I would definitely wait a couple of months and watch the feedback in the forums. But I do that even with all the mainline manufacturer phones I buy.

Waiting a couple of months is a very wise practice. One that I always follow when it comes to purchasing a new laptop, tablet or other tech gear.

When it comes to smartphones I used to do the same. However due to several variables like high demand, poor supply or launch irregularities like Google's release of the Nexus 4, I'm now taking it on a case by case basis.

When it comes to an all new product like the OnePlus One I do realize it's a huge gamble, yet I must admit there's just something about this project I find too compelling to wait. :D

cutting edge = bleeding edge

do you have enough band-aids?

when things are good and working.. awesome.
but when things go bad.. with these newer companies/devices.. support is hard to find. that is what I worry most

Yeh this is a new company with a new device. But hopefully when it's officially launched and available in the UK, US, etc. you won't have to be speaking Mandarin and/or sending it back to Shenzhen in the event of any problems.

Waiting a few months for any device is solid advice (and one which I can never seem to follow myself ;) )

The reason I said 1-2 years is because I personally would wait for the next product cycle.

You know you'll have CM support for 2 years, but I want to see how good they are at pushing other updates to the parts CM won't have access to.

Also, how their warranties are handled, how the device itself holds up, ect.

2 months isn't long enough to get a feel for the company itself.

Software can be changed, hardware cant

this is an example of what might be a bad situation with a new device/company..

I think we can have a little more confidence than that. We're not talking about a cheap Chinese knock-off manufacturer here.

CyanogenMod-based OnePlus One now promoted by Qualcomm | phonearena.com

Qualcomm's endorsement is no small thing, and neither is Steve Kondik's personal involvement.

"alongside an ultra-compact 5.5-inch display,"

So how would they describe a 4 inch display, e.g. the iPhone 5S, "miniscule", "microscopic"? And what would be a "normal sized" screen for GSM Arena? 6 inch, 7 inch?

Samsung makes a phone with an 8 inch screen, the Galaxy Mega, plus there's quite a few Chinese 7 and 8 inch phones as well. Myself, 5 inch is the largest I want in a mobile phone, really because of the ease of using it one handed, comfort of holding to my ear, and fitting it in my pockets. Many Chinese gents on the other hand carry man-bags, they don't put phones in their pockets.

Fanny Packs? :D

Many American tourists in Beijing wear fanny packs, usually spotted at such well known sites as Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. Often being hurded around in large groups, just like cattle.

Market and street vendors frequently wear them as well, as a convenient place to keep the money in the absence of a till.

Fanny packs are often associated with those IMO dreadful garish nylon shell-suits that were so common in the '80s and '90s, basically because they didn't have any pockets.

Think even "fanny pack" is an Americanism, because we always used to call them "bum bags". :D

Lol yeah i just love bein able to use the word "fanny" on a public forum. Differences in language can be fun sometimes :D
Did you catch the "fanny" irn-bru adverts mate?
