Help jelly bean battery issues

inspired4g

Newbie
I've been having terrible battery life on my nexus since the jelly bean update and it seems as though my apps are using a lot of the battery. I'll post some screen shots. Yesterday I went through 2 extended batteries granted it was with heavy use but it still seems to be pretty bad.

This is really disappointing. I have finally come to terms with the fact that I'm going to have to use an extra battery and have purchased the external battery charger for that reason but this is ridiculous. Is there a chance that I have a rouge app or is this really all I can expect from this phone? I'll post more screen shots when my battery is about to die

i can't see the pics you posted at work. But yes there is a chance you could have a rogue app. Most people suggest doing a factory reset to start off. Or start disabling some of the google now features that came with Jelly Bean.

When I took those screen shots all Google now services were turned off, I deleted the Facebook android app (noticed it was causing my maps to be on constantly) and gsmbattety is telling me that my brightness is on medium (that's the most I'm willing to go down considering I bought this phone to look at the beautiful screen) and I was down from 100 percent to 77 in 3 hours with only 20 mins of on screen time.

The last chart actually doesn't look bad to me. 3.33 Hours = 23% means a 14hr day on 4G. Do you have access to WiFi??

Can you post the graph screen that shows battery drop and what services were active. I'm curious about your signal strength and awake times.

I have since given the phone a quick charge while I was at work to make sure I wouldn't run out of battery before I got home so the battery levels won't be accurate for now. I'll charge up my spare batter tomorrow and use my phone like I normally do and see what you guys think. It was at 24 percent around 2 o clock with 1 hour and 20 mins of on screen time . I am by Toledo Ohio so 4g is strong. I'll post more screen shots tomorrow . Thanks for all of your interest/ help

If you are pulling data over 4G all day that's going to be a big drain. 4G uses more battery than WiFi or even 3G. Its faster, but uses more power, so if you a transferring a file it is probably a wash, but if you are streaming anything 4G will drain much faster. Also, the constant data traffic in the background will use more power on 4G than 3G or WiFi.

If you can connect to wifi at work I would do so.

Also, I'm curious what "medium brightness" is. If you go into the display settings for brightness, is the slider at like 50%? I try to keep mine at 30% if I'm indoors to maximize battery life, and that is plenty bright for me. Its a huge screen so brightness and screen on time really have a big impact on battery life.

Im wondering do these battery monitoring apps drain the battery enough or is it minimal drainage?

Minimal drain for me with GSam battery monitor - for example it is only .3% usage after 10hrs.. I am getting what I consider good battery life on JB (VZW Gnex). Between 2.5 and 3.5 hours of screen on time.

You have high Google Maps usage. Are you actually firing up the app?

GOOGLE MAPS > Location Settings > Location Reporting

I had this set before but after the JB update the default of "Auto update" is back !!!!

If you see Google Maps eating CPU and you haven't even used it try
setting Location Report to "Do not update your location".

Thanks for the tip, I just changed my setting to do not update. We'll see if that helps

I'm having a similar issue but to ridiculous lengths...

This only started happening after the recent jellybean update. The worst was when i went to sleep with the phone at 100% only to wake up to the phone being completely dead :[

Here are some pics of my battery usage. Android OS, phone idle, and standbye are taking a ridiculous amount of battery, it doesnt make sense.

Try better battery stats. It will tell you what's running the CPU. Its probably a stuck sync. I had google backup get stuck on for 11 hours....

Also, I've seen at least 2 other people posting here with problems that were related to kakao talk. You may want to try uninstalling that, at least temporarily.
