Just Got a New/Old hero as gift... vs? 1.5+

Stocky

Newbie
Bro -in-law traded up... this thing looks pretty new... I like it.

firmware 1.5
Kern 2.6.27 etc
sftwr 1.56.65 etc

I've spent quite a while at your site here pikn up info... seems lots of users are ready to "bail up"!
But for me, this is light speed... I know... newbie right?... well I jumped ms for linux long ago... now using a 11 year old brick with linux Puppy classic (old vs.)
I like cheap... and works...
Sorry for the long winded intro...
Ques?
Should I update this or what?? or what suggestions do you all have?
I haven't committed all my life to this yet (you know what i mean) but when the storage mem arrives I will.

I know you all are almost "toooo" on top of all this equipment... so much so it scares me to post.. I know you can shoot me down easily.. but what the heck... Whichever of you reads this is more then likely most qualified to give me real strong direction.. so what can I lose.

Please... If one of these dropped in your lap and it was your "only" option as a phone,
How would you take the most advantage in using it?
Thanks a lot for your time in review.

ps... I got it loaded on Sprint... unlimited... land and cell with insurance... etc. if that means anything...

I would simply take advantage of the Hero and root it and you will really see the things it can do, I would read in this section, all things rooted to get familiar with it, then when your ready let us know and can can help you root that puppy and really enjoy the phone to it's full potential

I would definitely root it. I was starting to hate my phone, but then I rooted and love it now. We're lucky that the development community is still pretty big for our phones. Like DonB said, read up and if you got questions, ask. People in this all things root section aren't dicks, like most people on other forums are. They actually help.

+1 on rooting

The phone's stock 2.1/Eclair life is pretty much at its end so..... fortunately, the development community is still going strong. With many stable 2.1 roms with the HTC Sense overlay, you won't have any trouble finding a good rom.

With 2 very stable AOSP (Android Open Source Project)2.2/Froyo roms, you won't be disappointed:)

And now the community has brought a near stable AOSP 2.3/Gingerbread rom, what more could you ask for:D:D

Granted, the Hero will never see the high benchmark scores of the phones with better processors but right now the Hero is still holding its own, imo;)

Have fun with your new phone and remember, there are many helpful people here in the forums to point you in the right direction:)

Keep the stock 1.5 long enough to Root it, then flash up to the 2.3 Gingerbread ROM and never look back. You'll love your Hero and impress those with fancier phones while you're at it. ;)

Great feedback...
Any More direct info would help..
I will want to start really filling it up like... right away...
I'm guessing it doesn't matter....
That a backup later will take care of any worries there?
As far as rooting... I'd start tomorrow.. I mean... what the heck...
Is there anyone out there that may have doc.'d an operation yet???
Something I could just follow start to finish??
Thnx

NP bro, those are all links in my signature, you have 2 easy options for rooting, you can use Universal Androot or Z4Root, they are both one click roots, then once you are rooted, then download an app called Rom Manager, one downloaded, open it and allow it super user permission, then flash a recovery image. Then make an immediate Nandroid back up of your current stock rooted RoM, once you have that backed up, then you are on your way to start flashing RoMs of your choice, as Andy mention, there are a few good choices, AOSP 9.9.2 which is a 2.2 Froyo Rom, also CM6 is 2.2, they also have 2.1 LiquidSense sense UI RoM which you may like if you want a sense like RoM, but like Kit mentioned earlier, I would simply root and shoot right for the stars and go straight to [ROM][GPL] aospCMod | AOSP 2.3 *** (Gingerbread) and not look back, see links below ;)

Universal Androot

Z4Root

I blew by your links...
Sorry...
I'll get back.
Thnx all!

I'm hearing potential probs with camera function... true? Any other probs of note?
Do I need any periferals (sp) for pc interface... assuming i need...

Again, first time on anything but pc's.. so that potential "he probably already knows that" stuff would be necessary for me.
I'm wondering about settings I should have clicked off B4 actions as well..
Need 2 know about IED's..
hate being a woos on all that... but that's what I am.

This "will, and "is", my everyday/only phone.
Thnx again.

PS... Damagecontrol has run it's course...??

Camera Works on GB . . . Old issue.

If you are on 1.5 - I recommend Dons Universal Androot link above.
Next Download ROM Manager Flash Clockwork Recovery - Make your backup....and BOOM
Off to the races....

In you... not me.

I've seen i can download to my pc... then work to hero...
or strait through the phone...
but read if it's slow and i get a call... bla bla bla

Is that right?

So do i need a harness/ cable... whatever...
Will the step by step do it...?

Should I have my mem/storage piece B4 I begin?

Is there anything i'll need to have handy in the middle of this that you'd recommend me being aware of?

Thnx

You can root without ever connecting your phone to the computer

I'm on it. I wanted to know if I needed my card B 4 I got started the root process...
To me that may have been an issue.. fair enough?
But no one answered me on that... I got no, "You need the card first", or
"Go ahead right now... don't need the card for the rooting process."

That's pretty basic... I think? Hey... this is something I'm pretty hyped up for, but who wants to frankenstein a brick?
Did I miss something there?
I've been expecting the card in the mail for a couple of days now.. but I might just buy one somewhere... (got any suggestions on that.... size.. make?)
itmt
So I'm going to assume not being told that I need the card, is you're way of telling me I don't need it. The storage isn't used in the process.

AND... everywhere I look '
i see universal is for "Hero (vs.2.1)... and once I saw Hero (2.2)
so,
Should I be upgrading to 2.1 first, and "Then" rooting... ???

I always wonder why they'd be specific on the version... right? or too squeemish?

Sorry:(, if you would have said "Do I need a sd card", I believe you would have gotten a more direct answer. But yes, a sd card is absolutely needed;)

Ques 1) So i have to upgrade to 2.1 first?

1 No, you can root 1.5 but it will be the long method. If you upgrade to 2.1, there are 1 click root apps out there. Look in the the sticky at the top of the 'All things Root'

2 No suggestion on a card here, as I'm still using the 2gb card my phone came with when I bought the phone. But I would recommend a 8gb card. I'm sure Amazon or something of that nature will have good deals

So .... Advice to me is...

A) upgrade to Hero vs 2.1, then use universal...
or:
B) use the long method? (with 1.5)(if so... where do I find those instructions please?

C) Will anyone say which would be best/safest/most stable/easiest andonWhy? please?

I'm hoping those 3 ques will be it for you... sorry and thanks.

I have only rooted from 2.1. it is super easy. I used an app called z4root. you can find it on the xda site. ill try to look for you. all you do is click a button called root.
I use an 8gb card. its good enough room for me. I think the easiest way is getting a one click root app like z4root and then installing rom manager.

Easiest way is as Andy mentioned, you simply upgrade your phone either to the latest 2.1 update and use the Z4Root process which is simple and harmless, or if you want to use the Universal Androot then I am not sure if that works for sure on 1.5, but you can download the RUU 2.1 ****.5 and then use the universal Androot which is what I had used to root my phone and took less than 3 minutes to root, loading the RUU takes a little longer but the root process is quick, hope that helps, I believe Z4Root will allow you to root on one click with the latest update to 2.1, so it is whatever your most comfortable with. I mention Universal Androot as that is what I have used and know it works, but many have had success with Z4Root. If you need the links let me know and I will post them for you including the RUU 2.1 ***.5

if you want to use it as an mp3/media player, i would got 8 and above. Probably 16, as movies and music can take up alot of room. i hear class 6 is better, but i use a sandisk class 2 and have never had any problems.

I'm 1/2 cro magnon man, and I was able to root and flash custom ROMs. :D
I was on the latest 2.1 update, and I used z4root. Easy as making mac and cheese.

[APP] z4root - xda-developers

Thanks Don for the link, found it one of your posts. ;)

I personally think the update then use z4root would be the easiest / safest route, since it is one click. No need to mess with any commands. Then follow the instructions Don and Andy laid out. Believe me they won't steer you wrong, helped me out mant times. :D

If you want to understand your phone better and have basic computing skills I would root 1.5. If you have no concern for any of that stuff, then run the 2.1 RUU and use the 1 click method. They will both be stable, and they both allow you the same access to your phone. It really is a personal choice.

Yeh.. well i'd like to be much better versed in all this.. but would rather learn under a "no can self skrew up" circumstances.
Guess I get confused... as i'd said... I know i reviewed a string.... about a month ago... didn't make note of it... where Don and Andy discussed being able to do a one button rooting on 1.5. One of them said NO, and the other corrected him and said YES. So I figured I'm in without the need of uppin it to 2.1.
It stymied me a bit... i figured changes happen so often that in that post they were both right, and that since then something changed.. ?
Anyway...

If I can't do EASY 1 clik on 1.5 then I'm gonna chicken and up to 2.1...

Ques... will i easily find 2.1 ... not 2.3 or 2.3.1 etc etc etc.... ? if it really matters. and i'm assumin i can do it all by phone... vs pc? Do i need to know where it is?
and
Ques on card...
I'm not big on movies at all... though videos... maybe you tube.. instrctnl etc would be great... as well as music.. but not thousands of titles like i hear some bragging about...
And considering the reasonable(?) prices recently... figure 8 gig class 6 is the way to go? Just not clear on why? Anyone see advantages... over one or other?? and more importantly... any brands to probably stay away from??
i'd love to get to miicro center tomorrow and just do all this right away.

Thnx again...
