Root Kernal Help

So hands down right now Warms twopointthree has amazing battery life but i have some issues with the rom, CM7 is amazing also but not nearly as good battery life by good battery life i mean warms can last me 3+ days, with the same usage on cm7 it can last me a day maybe two. now i have only used cm7 with stock kernel so im guessing thats the problem, does anyone know of a kernel that has insane battery life but doesn't kill the rom?

My problems with Warms are
little to no internal space
its a sense rom so its performance isnt as good as asop (cm7)

Please help :)

Try Kernel Manager LITE from the app market. Be sure to read about each kernel thoroughly. You will need an AOSP kernel for the CM7 and a Sense kernel for the Warm ROM I believe.

I have very little space too. Try wiping cache and moving as many apps to the SD card as you can. Doing that gives me about an additional 60MB. Not much but it helps. Be sure to empty cache of apps on the regular too.

yeah i tryed moving the apps but it gets annoying and i have heard about kernel manager lite but i just wanted to see if someone on here already knows of an amazing kernel so i dont have to do tests with different ones

For AOSP my recommended kernel is tiamat 3.3.7 however YRMV. Kernels are like women they are not all for everyone and sometimes you can ride'm pretty hard and they perform beautifully and sometimes they just crap out and sleep on ya. You may have to try several version before getting one that works for you. Also make sure you give it a few days Kernels need to settle in.

How are you moving apps?

Personally, it varies upon Evo to Evo. The replacement Evo I have works better with the SavagedMod kernel for AOSP than it did with Tiamat like my original Evo and other Evo AOSP users like using. I get better battery, and not as many problems.

You could try one or both of those and for Sense ROMs...I can't exactly say which are my favorite particularly since I like using the kernels with SBC and current Sense kernels don't have SBC.

Yeah, I feel ya on that one. Our phones are a bit outdated now so other people don't have a problem with space so app developers don't worry about it as much.

I do have an app called "App2SD" or something that helps me move over the apps quickly. I still need to actually click "Send to SD card" but it shows all of the available ones. I believe Titanium Backup also has an option like this and can actually do it for you but you have to go PRO. I think. CM7 was great because it had an option that would enable pretty much any app to be sent to the SD card. I often wonder why Google Music and others won't let you move to SD cause it takes a hell of a lot of room. So that was a plus in CM7 that I miss :/

You could also use CacheMate that will remove all app cache quickly with one click.

apps2sd does not move the app to the SD Card It only moves part of the app to the sdcard.

So Apps2sd does this; You have a bunch of paper work all in your office on your desk so you grab a few stacks off the desk and place it on the floor. It doesn't really do anything but give you the illusion it is giving you more space.

Dark Tremmors a2sd completely moves the full app to a partiton on the sdcard (Partition is created first 1gig is sufficient) the apps are moved from the internal phone memory to the ext of the SDCARD.

So a2sd takes the paperwork off your desk moves it to a new room and places a small sticky note telling you exactely where to find it.

Does that ROM have A2SD enabled by default? If so it should move them there on its own as long as your partitioned.

Just opens up a lot of internal space. It moves the entire app to the SD card and just leaves a symbolic link to tell the phone where to find it.

This leaves the phone with lots of space. For example I'm on MikG 3.0 and have over 320MB free left on the internal space of the phone.

You'll probably need a better SD card than the stock one, but you can get a class 10 16 GB one for about $15.

Theres also a very good explanation of benefits

I'm about to switch from teacher to student because I too have not partitioned my SD card on any ROM but more so because I didn't understand what it did exactly. I've got a 16GB card so that won't be a problem for me at all. Thanks for the tip.

They're right too, it doesn't ultimately take the app off of the phone when you go to Settings>Applications>"appname">Move to SD card. It only does a portion. But partitioning sounds exciting and like something that I desperately need.

Straight from the guide:
the issue is that the evo has a small amount of ram on the phone. not sure what htc was thinking when designing the evo. but there is the apps2sd that can be sort of helpful. when you go to settings/applications/manage apps and then move the apps to the sd card, you are using apps2sd. it moves the apps to the sd card, but it only moves part of the app to the card. the other part is still left on the phone. that is why you can't use any widgets attached to the app when it is moved to the card.

so what is taking up all of the ram then? well your phone, as it is, has the dalvik cache which the phone uses to load any executable files that it needs. and then there is cache where your temp files are stored. of course there is your apps. and finally there is the stock rom with sense 1.0. so you can see how fast your ram will disappear.

the only way to get around this is to be rooted. the custom roms that are out now are much smaller and faster then the stock rom. plus you can partition your card and use a2sd which is different then apps2sd. a2sd moves the entire app to your card. the only thing left on your phone is a symbolic link that tells the phone where to find the app on your card. it saves a ton of ram by doing this. just to give you an idea i have 160 apps with still 250mb left!

there are two types of a2sd scripts. one is cm a2sd and the other is darktremor a2sd. usually if a rom has a2sd cooked in, it usually has cm a2sd. when you flash your rom your apps when restored with titanium backup will automatically be move to the sd card. with darktremor a2sd, you would first need a rom to have support for it, and then you need to flash darktremor into the rom. once flashed then you can manually push the apps to the card by using terminal emulator to enter the commands.

you will need a higher class card to do this, preferably a class 6 or higher. the higher class card is need especially if you use intensive apps like games and such. the reason is that since the apps are on the card the phone then needs to read and write on the card as the app runs. so if you have a slower card your apps will suffer.

Partition Your Card

it is recommended that you do this before trying to flash a rom.
so here are the directions on how to do it:
1.copy your content of the card to a computer because partitioning will wipe the card's content.
2.go into recovery and select partition your sd card
3.enter 32 for swap, and 1024 or 2048 for ext2, and do the rest for FAT
4.select upgrade ext2 to ext3
6.select usb-ms toggle and transfer your contents of your card on your computer back to the card.
5.go to the main menu and do a full wipe (min data, dalvik cache and cache)
6.flash the superwipe
7.flash the rom of your choice.
8.reboot

from now on it is recommended you wipe dalvik cache, cache, data and sd ext.before flashing roms. MAKE SURE THAT YOU DO NOT SELECT WIPE SD CARD as it will do just that. your card will be erased. also make sure that when making a nandroid backup to select sd ext to be backed up as well.

if you guys have a higher class card, i do not know what is stopping you from partitioning it. like rxpert says, it is super easy. when i had my evo working i had 160 apps on mikg with 250mb still left on my phone. i have a 16g class 10 card.

the quote that rxpert provided is from the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. it can be found in the after root section under partitioning and moving.

After you have partitioned the drive and apps have been moved over. You will need to create a Nandroid and you will want to click the ext option as well.

Your backup should look similar to this

I dont get it.... I have never needed to partition my card to free up space on my phone... I only use about 30-40 apps, but still.... how many apps can ya use? lol

I forget about apps I have installed outta the 30-40 I have, cant even imagine trying to keep track of 100+
