Root [KERNEL] Franco Kernel Discussion (r68)

R16 fixed this! Go flash!

Pfft. theres already an R17 ;)

You won't notice any visible changes on r17 compared to r16, its all in the underlying system - check github for the bug fix patches I cherry-picked from CAF.

So results of r16 test day. Light to mild use of phone throughout the day, at work for 8 hours, wifi connected most of the day. We also went out that evening and used the camera a bit.

I guess I ended the test early because at the end of the day it's going to get charged that night or the following morning when I'm getting ready. I suppose the main objective for me personally is making the battery last at least a day with heavy, unrestricted use and this certainly seems achievable.

Doing the test also made me realise how I had got into the habit of connecting my phone to a powerpoint very often throughout the day. I had to make a conscious effort not to do this. I suppose this is only a good thing as well.

Overall happy with the results, I can see me supporting franco kernel a lot.

Now what couldn't come at better timing is the 4.4.1 update which I now need to get my head around how to install that so I know what my weekend will be taken up with... There appears to be some simple steps to take but it still really confuses me and I get nervous about running into problems.

When I go to flash the updated Cataclysm whenever it is ready, in terms of the Franco Kernel:

Do I need to do anything?

Will Cataclysm overwrite the kernel?

Do I need to restore my Nandroid with Cataclysm before I added Franco?

Or do I truly need to do nothing and I will end up with the new Cataclysm with the Franco kernel?

Thanks for your help.

Almost all roms (Cataclysm included) will contain the stock kernel, so it'll be rewritten.

My advice would be to make a nandroid backup, wipe cache and dalvik cache, flash the updated cataclysm, and then flash whatever the newest Franco kernel is

If you follow the above steps you won't lose any data and will have the newest cataclysm and franco

I am a bit confused here about losing data.. if you back up your device with something like Pro Backup, will you lose the data when using Franco paid version?

I think I may be talking about two different things here but data loss prevention is primary..

I purchased Franco and I need a user manual as I wanted to change parameters and do not know what options for each are.. For example fast usb charge is set at 0 is that an on or off? How do I know expected results from changing parameter values?

Before I did any Franco my 3dMark score was about 18100 and on Franco 14 it was less than 14000??

What am I doing wrong?

Backing up data is a hedge in case you lose data. In general, you only lose data in a factory reset, which happens the first time you install a new ROM. Flashing a Kernel does not require a factory reset, nor does flashing an update of a ROM you already have installed. In those cases, you can just wipe cache and Dalvik cache, which cleans things up but doesn't touch your data.

Thus, if I wipe cache and Dalvik cache, flash the ROM update and Flash Franco, I should be able to reboot with all my data intact and my system updated.

I'm not familiar with Pro backup. But you don't lose any data when updating or changing kernels. You lose data when you flash a new ROM.

Its binary
0= off
1= on

As far as benchmarks... Don't put too much stock in them. Chances are your device is heating up during the benchmark and your CPU is being throttled.

All that matters is real world performance, and benchmarks aren't that great of an indicator for that

It looks like r19 is out, any feedback on it?. Also, any of you guys using the program to flash or doing it through recovery? I have the premium app already and was curious as to your thoughts.

That's good to know. I had some time today to sideload the update, root, and custom recovery in one shot so I'll give r19 a try.

What happens if you do as I went to 19 on a new Nexus and one thing I noticed is the speed of recharge with value set to 1 on USB fastcharge..??

Off of my backup lithium ion 10000 charger it went from 12% to 40 % in less than 2 hrs (considerably less).

I'm not sure I'm following you, can you expand on that?

Sure... I mistakenly loaded Franco Kernel on a new Nexus and did not see the upper right where it said to backup so I flashed the R19. One of the options is fast USB charge and I chose that and it works well BUT

Since I do NOT have 4.4.1 yet can this kernel ruin the phone? Why damage can be done since I went from Stock to R19 directly ?

That cleared it up, thanks

No, if the phone booted and things like your WiFi and camera still work you'll be fine.

It just means there wasn't enough changes in the kernel from 4.4.0 to 4.4.1 for it to break things.

That's not always the case though

I hate to ask a noob question

But does anyone know if it safe to use with cm11.
I remembering reading somewhere cyanogen Roms require different kernels
