Root Kernels and SetCpu

I would like to know.... what can a custom kernel do, that SetCpu cant do?

What are the differences in Sense kernels...(i.e. what makes one better than another)..I have flashed MikG 3.0 and still have stock kernel and utilizing SetCpu with different profiles and battery life is fair to good...thinking about flashing ChopSuey v 9.2.6 and also using the SetCpu....I think MikG and Chop Suey are compatible?...

i would start by reading up on kernels here..
KERNELS For Dummies
ocnbrze has done a great write up here... could possibly answer all your questions... :)

I did but maybe I missed my answer there..I will re-read it..
Quick question though, Is chopsuey kernel compatible with MikG? and where can I find info on chopsuey?

For starters, you can't do anything with SetCPU without a custom kernel.

XDA thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505419
Also a free download link if you'd like to try it out. If you keep the application I would HIGHLY suggest buying the app from the android market to support the developer.

Basically Custom kernels give you the ability to have options, and SetCPU allows you to set those options. (the very simplified version)

Well that's not entirely true. SetCPU allows you to control the CPU, and the kernel you are running is going to determine what CPU options you have at your disposal. Stock kernel you're going to be pretty limited with 245 MHz as your min and 998 MHz as your max. You could underclock to 245/768 with the stock kernel to save a little juice. But you really only have one governor to choose from "ondemand".

When you flash a custom kernel, you get a lot more options at your disposal to really do some customizing. You can run the "ondemand" cpu governor, or something like interactivex or smartass. Do a quick google search and you'll get a better explanation of CPU governors than I ever could give you.

Chop Suey is definitely compatible with MikG.

Chopsuey is compatible with any sense-based ROM. Look in the ROM & Kernel download sticky (within the fancy new root sticky) to find links to all currently available kernels.

Awesome:) Thanks for the info....I will flash chop suey today, maybe, other stuff I need to do first...I REALLY Like the MikG rom so far...
2 weeks ago I was completely ignorant of the whole rooting thing....since then I have been reading alot...learning alot especially from this site..This site and all user are awsome..thanks to all...:D:D

uh-oh i see another flashoholic amongst us:D:D

One bit of advice I will give. Is before messing with things to much give the kernel a chance to settle in and perhaps the most important thing is to make sure you NANDROID before making changes to the kernel or system. When I first started using SetCPU I did a very bad thing I set my stuff to high and told it to do so at boot. I had neglected to do a nand before hand and well you should know how it went. Fortunately I had a nand before I installed the kernel I was able to get back to then I just needed to reflash the kernel but oh so much better it would have been had I had all that in the nand to being with.
