Root Kernels/Radios/Roms... Please help???

OK I'm frustrated again... :) Sprint just made some change and now I'm not eligible for an upgrade for another year (I thought I was eligible for a 1 yr in Feb)

I'm trying really hard to be happy with this phone. It's still randomly freezing/turning off and getting stuck in the water flash screen thing. It does it about once ever 3-4 days at least. Before it turns off it freezes. I can be taking a pic, sending an email, making a phone call, etc

It does it will all the Freedom Kernels, with root or without, with the MikG2.56 ROM... My older phone did this too (the one I have now is a replacement)

What should my next step be? Other than the random rebooting/ freezing (If it fully rebooted w/o a battery pull it wouldn't be so much of an issue) I LOVE the MikG2.56

Anyone have any brilliant suggestions that they can dumb down for me? LOL

I rooted my wife's phone a couple of weeks ago and she didn't have much luck with MikG. Same as you, constant reboots. So I loaded a Synergy nightly rom on her phone and she's been happy since, no random reboots.

So I would try a Myn's Synergy nightly rom with either Freedom's Synergy nightly kernel or ChopSuey's Synergy nightly kernel.

You can find the nightlies over here goo-inside.me - Nightly downloads make sure download and flash the supersonic builds.

Thanks! for the quick help! I'll try that next :) Hopefully I'll have time tonight to play around with it. :D

also maybe try some of the sense 1.0 4.53 ota roms out. swag and the classic evo are also pretty good roms t try. you can get the in the rom/kernel sticky. it is under Gingerbread Official OTA 4.53.651.1 roms section.

Well the new Rom/Kernel worked for a day and a half. It just rebooted/froze in the animation screen while I was pulling up FB.

I even only installed the necessary apps (slacker, calengoo, mycast weather, and G+)

Anyone have any other ideas :(

what rom and kernel combo did you go with?

i would try a different rom. my phone hated synergy. i would try maybe the stock 4.54 ota rom or something like that the swag or the classic evo rom found in the rom kernel sticky.

OK I'm going to try the Swagged Out Stock v1.9.0.5 RC2 HTC EVO 4G ROM

Does it matter what Kernel I use? Do I have to flash a Kernel? Or can I just only do the Roms until I find one my phone likes?

You don't need to flasha kernel. Each Rom will come with on and you can run that until you get everything set up.

Also when you flash a kerenl you want to wipe cache and dalvik cache in revcovery first then flash the zip file for the kernel.

If you are getting a bunch of reboots randomly it sounds as if you are not wiping something completely. Are you manually wiping and then running the superwipe file?

For some reason superwipe won't work for me... maybe I have a bad download? I do wipe all three things 4 times before flashing any ROM and the two things 4 times before flashing a Kernel.

I have the swag ROM installed and now only time will tell. :) Maybe I'm just using my phone too much! I stream music pretty much all day at work and am a heavy email user outside of the office.

Thanks for your help! If this ROM randomly reboots I'll try to get the superwipe thing to work and flash it again

what recovery do you have? if you have clockwork mod 3 or higher then superwipe will not work for you. clockwork mod 3 or higher only supports a script called edify. most flashable zip files are in amend scripting. amon ra, and clockwork mod 2.6 supports both scripts. so you may want to switch to amon ra (or even the new amon ra style recovery). you can get directions on how to switch in the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html.

And if you do happend to have CWM recovery, there is a new recovery out that is able to restore both clockwork and amon ra. So that is really useful if you need to go back to whatever youve already back up.

If this doesnt make sense.. its 3 am on a saturday here :confused::confused:

:D

It did it again! *wail* Of course it always happens when I'm trying to load the navigation, get the camera up quickly to get a good pic, etc.

I switched the recovery methods and am waiting for the nandroid backup to complete. Then I'll use superwipe and reload the swag ROM to see if that helps...

sorry, what exactly happened again? a bootloop?

Just did it again!

It freezes for a second then brings up the white 4G screen or the watermark flashy screen depending on the ROM (Did this with the stock ROM too)

Right now it's just playing the boot animation over and over and over... I have to do a battery pull to get it to restart again.

So using the superwipe with and switching the recovery didn't work and I'm still using the Swag ROM...

This time I was using Google Listen with a podcast and the phone was plugged into the computer for charging. It happens while I'm making a phone call, already talking on the phone call, taking a pic, using the browser, in the marketplace, streaming music, etc

I did just reinstall Brightness Level from Curvefish this morning. Maybe that's making it unstable? I am going to remove that program and see if it does it again.

So far I've
1. Jumped through a zillion hoops and threw a dozen temper tantrums to get a replacement EVO to see if that solves it
1. limited my market apps
2. changed my battery to see if that was causing a malfunction
3. rooted the phone to try and fix the issue
4. Flashed Swag, MikG2.56, and Myn's Synergy nightly rom
5. Flashed a bunch of different Kernels
6. Switched to amon ra so I can use Superwipe

Is this even fixable? :( I can't believe it's still doing this... Should I give up and hope for a big Xmas bonus and just buy something on ebay? What else is more stable and comparable?

ok so this is my story:
i had the phone rooted for awhile and a few months ago (more like 4 or 5, i forget) my phone decided to reboot for no reason(i know that it is not a bootloop like yours but it is pretty much similar). it would happen as i would be playing a game or using navigation. the phone would get hot then reboots. it started out slowly, but it got progressively worse. i tried all sorts of different roms wth the same results. so i then unrooted my phone and i was stll getting them. so i just took my phone in and showed them my issue. i was able to show that if i run pandora, and navigation (both sprints and google's)
that it will reboot. they ended up giveing me a refurbished.

now with the evo being eol now, i'm not sure what sprint will do for you. but i would unroot your phone and see if this is the case and then take it in and see what they say.

Unfortunately I already did that and this IS the replacement :( Should I kick a stink and try to get another replacement? It reboots more often when not rooted, but I cannot recreate it on command so they didn't really believe me last time. Hence the hissy fit/drama to get a replacement.

i would most definitely try to get a replacement, if you can. they may ask you to go through assurion, if you have insurance and pay the $100 deductible. i had a usb port that was coming loose and they wanted me to go through assurion. i did not feel like paying the $100 on this phone, so i went and took the upgrade and got the evo 3d.

Gah I hate dealing with sprint... The stores in my area with repair centers are in in more populated areas and you absolutely get ghetto service there.

Thanks you SO much for all your help! At the very least I now know a whole lot more about roms, kernels, and how to use them ;)

If I go back to the stock ROM can they tell that I rooted my phone at all if I wipe my sd card? I've always wondered that...

well yes. if you still have s-off, they can easily find out. it will be up to the tech if he wants to work with your phone or not. some techs really do not care. i have a sprint tech who looks the other way for me, if i have any issues. but it will vary from tech to tech or store to store. sprint has made it so that it is up to the tech to make that decision.
