KitKat 4.4.2 "bugfix" updates rolling out

A further KitKat, 4.4.2, update has been released for the International GT-i9505, quad core, Galaxy S4 to give them the latest NG8, July, bugfix firmware. Changelist = 2309103.

These handsets are in the main unbranded and therefore Samsung can update them directly and immediately without waiting for carrier approval or bloatware. All come with the latest global modem, XXUGNG8, for improved signal quality and clarity.

It's not like Samsung haven't provided the carriers with all the updates. U.S. Cellular is the only U.S.A. carrier to offer a bugfix update since the original launch of Android 4.4.2. In fact, they have had 2 bugfix updates that now means they are on June firmware. See post #54.

IMHO, if U.S. carriers stopped piling on their own apps and modifying the Samsung/Android firmware and also passed on regular updates that the rest of the world receives, there would be far fewer complaints on this forum from the 7 mainstream U.S. carrier branded handsets that, collectively, only represent less than 2% of all Samsung Galaxy S4 firmware releases worldwide.

What you have in the U.S. are carriers who demand their own variants of the worldwide model, in some cases with hardware changes, (see, Gorilla Glass 3 not on all Galaxy S4's!!!), who then proceed to add, change and modify the stock Samsung firmware, to a greater or lesser degree, to offer their own eco systems and branding and in the process create a whole set of new problems for their customers and who then refuse to offer those same customers the regular updates that over 98% of firmwares for the rest of the world enjoy. These U.S. carrier branded variants are not confined to just Samsung but cover a number of manufacturers, such is the power of the carrier , "cartel", that operates in the U.S. and is the price demanded from manufacturers for U.S. sales. The notable exception to this is the Apple iPhone, which may account for its success in the U.S.A.. Also, unlike most countries worldwide, there are no unbranded handsets readily available as this would break the seeming stranglehold that carriers have. See #1.3 and #1.5 of post #1...

It is no coincidence that there is a direct correlation between the number of complaints on this forum to the amount of, "bloatware", and modifications, coupled with a lack of updates for U.S. firmwares which, in the main, are running on releases that have received numerous "bugfix", updates, as can be seen in this thread, from Samsung that are not being passed on to U.S. customers who are left on some of the most out-of-date firmwares, worldwide. For a country that prides itself on competitiveness and a free market, there appears to be a distinct lack of it as far as cell phones are concerned.

As consumers, you should...

1. Demand that these Samsung updates are passed on to you by your carriers.

2. Demand they should cease modifying hardware and firmware to such an extent that it is not profitable or viable to offer updates quickly.

3. Demand the sale of un-branded handsets which would disincentivize carriers from adding bloatware and not updating.

Alternatively, you could...

1. Root your handset, (the U.S. only has a 1 year warranty period), and run one of the latest, up-to-date, custom ROMs that are based on the latest releases.

2. Get an iPhone.

You are so right. The way digital communications work here is the exact opposite of a free market.

I had my handset rooted for the past several months, until yesterday. Somehow, after several weeks of successfully deflecting it, AT&T managed to rollout their bug fix to my phone despite my best efforts to squelch it. Now my phone is no longer rooted and nothing I try seems to be able to restore that functionality.

I am very interested in your suggestion to go with a custom ROM. It never occurred to me that Samsung's worldwide update rollouts could benefit me if I used one.

Because you seem knowledgable I have two queries:

1. Any idea how I can re-root my Samsung SGH-I337 running Android 4.4.2; Kernel version 3.4.0-2539008 Build KOT49H.I337UCUFNI1?

2. Once I accomplish that, could you recommend a custom ROM that is up to date? I'll have to spend a week or so reading tutorials on how to flash my ROM before I actually try it, but it's good to also read up on potential replacement ROMs.
