LA isn't looking so good right now.

California government: Brown wants to complete budget agreement in 60 days - latimes.com

Those of you not living in California, fold out the lawn chairs, break out the ice chest of beers and soda pop, sit back, relax, and enjoy the train wreck.-GregMaragos

i've got to get my parents out of that God forsaken state.

Not that bad... :D we have some really cool stuff like crowded freeways and earthquakes, some stupid laws and who knows what we can expect for small business like ours. I am about to move into a bigger shop and now they are saying that they want to pass a law, rules / regulations or what ever you want to call them that will require all shirt screenprinters to have a fire sprinkler system in the shops and new laws for inks... But hey I when I win the lotto I will move.... :D

i was born and raised in San Diego. i got out in '94. i am never going back(to live there).

Yeah I'm just down the hill from SD... We have the desert for going out and riding, off road and SD for the cool weather. I been here all my life, I have lived in other countries with my other jobs but nothing Like the U.S.A. California is in bad shape and I hope it gets better soon. If I do move it will be to a cooler place and at the moment I can't afford it so here I must stay.:D

as the old saying goes....... you reap what you sew...... the people of California deserve exactly what they get

You believe that the people of California wanted this?

Is this a "I hate CA" thread? It sure sounds like it.

California is in a wreck right now. Congress, the national economy, and the Governator allowed it to fall this far. I find it a bit rude to say that the citizens deserve what was out of their control. If you can say that about the people in CA, you can say that about any other citizen in the US.

Thank god for CA producing 13% of US's GDP.

California has been in the control of 1 party for many years and the people have not voted the bums out. Instead they voted for Brown for governor who will just accelerate the insolvency of the state. There is no serious effort to control spending.

I'm guessing that's what copestag means by you reap what you sow.

Ohhhh I see. Thanks for clarifying that.

Where's the limit to where we can say that we "deserve" it? Now I'm thinking of all of those people who are in difficult times right now due to the economy and poor spending of the US government. Do they "deserve it" because they voted for certain people in office? or is it really out of their control? How many things that happen to people can you actually blame them for because they live in CA?

Blame the government officials for screwing this up... not the citizens. If that's the case... then we can all blame ourselves for getting the US to where it's right now... not the government officials.

Keep in mind also... if anyone is thinking that of the people of CA to be hipsters, liberals, marijuana smoking junkies... think twice.

Here is a story just posted by Victor Davis Hansen at NRO. Now some will dismiss him just because he is a conservative author, but this is a good read on what is happening to CA.

Two Californias - Victor Davis Hanson - National Review Online

"The last three weeks I have traveled about, taking the pulse of the more forgotten areas of central California. I wanted to witness, even if superficially, what is happening to a state that has the highest sales and income taxes, the most lavish entitlements, the near-worst public schools (based on federal test scores), and the largest number of illegal aliens in the nation, along with an overregulated private sector, a stagnant and shrinking manufacturing base, and an elite environmental ethos that restricts commerce and productivity without curbing consumption."

That is an article from a very conservative viewpoint talking about some rural parts of CA in a small region and not taking CA in as a whole. His basis is on what he observed in that region alone, disregarding the other parts of CA (I believe that it's a fairly large state). It would be like observing all of... Rhode Island and making that representative of what's going on in the US.

It's also incredibly opinionated. In every state, there are going to be great areas and other parts where it's not great at all.

He was in CA for 3 weeks?

It seems to be much more of an article against illegal immigration and what that's doing versus what is actually happening to CA. He talks about illegal immigration a LOT.

... I hope nobody comes up with a conclusion on CA based on that article. That article is very narrow-focused, as was the intent of the writer.

I feel like people generalize way too much about certain groups of people, certain regions, certain countries, and certain parts of the world. It's kind of like how so many of us, Android owners, make a single generalization on Apple users... and vice versa. I don't see much good coming from that.

Just clarifying:

California has a GSP of $1.7 Trillion.
The US has a GDP of $14.12 Trillion.

That's only 12%.

California has a population of 37 million people.
The US has a population of 311 million people.

That's only 12%.

So, I guess California is pulling their weight, but they aren't anything special in that.

I see the sentiment as a "you get what you vote for", not a California deserves bad leaders... they just elected them.

There is a spot right in the middle of California that does not seem like the rest of California. Kern County is a pretty Conservative county. Kevin McCarthy came from Kern County, very out of the norm for politicians to come out of California. And then we also probably have more Wind Farms and Solar Farms than anywhere else, more oil wells and very significant share of the agricultural production. Besides the horrible air quality (thanks to everyone north of us), Kern County is a nice oasis in California.

Having the 8th largest economy in the world is no small feat. :)

The original post was about LA...this has gotten of topic. Might as well close the thread at this point.

I don't see how that article is about LA. It talks a lot about CA as a whole and not specifically about LA. Brown is the governor-elect and doing stuff in LA... but that's really about it concerning LA itself.

True, but that's because of the size of your population, not the innovation of your citizens.

In fact, given silicon valley, I would say that your average citizen is Less productive than the rest of the world's average citizens, but no hard data on that.

When were we talking about the innovation of the citizens? Nobody is arguing that CA citizens are worth more or somehow better than anyone else. He is simply pointing this out because somehow people seem to think that California citizens deserve to burn.

Speaking of innovation, a total of 56 faculty and researchers affiliated with the University of California have won 57 Nobel Prizes, including 24 prizes since 1995.

And that's just one university in California. I wonder how many Nobel laureates in total call California home?

How many faculty members and researchers affiliated with the University of Alabama are Nobel laureates? How many Nobel laureates call Alabama home?

I would guess that California and Massachusetts lead the nation in innovations and in Nobel laureates.

A screenprinter, huh? We also do that kind of work, but highly specialized and a tad more dangerous than shirt printing.

I might ask you about the new laws. Seems reasonable to have a fire sprinkler or other supression system in my shop and if there are no laws that mandate it, chances are, people would not put one in place. Just asking.

Diddo the potential laws governing inks. We use inks that will definately damage you if you breath them.

Just curious.

Yeah, Bob...it is still the gold standard. What awards have you won in recent years that show a higher level of achievement than the Nobel? And perhaps you can produce a list of Alabama Nobel Prize winners that rivals the California list. That was the original question i asked.
