Laggy home button

Newbie
I was a bit excited for this phone. The EVO 4G LTE (One X) came out and really blew me away. It turned me into an Android fan, as I've had iPhones since the 3G. I got my GSII before the EVO came out, and was a little dismayed, but I've learned a lot about Android from it.

Anyway, one thing I've noticed with the GSIII is that it's laggy. Particularly when you hit the home button. It takes .5 seconds (or sometimes longer) to actually take you home. With 2GB of RAM, I thought for sure this thing would be snappier than the EVO (which is already very snappy). I've went to the developer options and disabled all the animations, and the lag didn't disappeared, it just seemed clunkier. I don't know if the animations have something to do with it, and Samsung built that time in for the animations, but it's rather (actually very) annoying, and I have trouble recommending the GSIII over the EVO. I love that the GSIII has a menu button, and all the little extras, but I'm not sold. Is there a setting I'm maybe missing?

This isn't just our Sprint demo devices, either. I thought maybe our demo app was making it lag, but my wife (who works for AT&T) brought home her seed device GSIII and it does the same thing.

Yeah I agree. Home button is slow.. And I'm not fond of how the texting is on it.. I got rid of the one x for this.. And may be a bad move

I got the Verizon version yesterday and there hasn't been any lag whatsoever. Maybe it comes after continued use, but this phone is fast and lag-free. I came from a Galaxy Nexus running Jellybean, and I thought I would miss "project butter", but the S3 is at least as fast or not faster running ICS as the GNex is running JB.

I don't mind the Home button, but I think Samsung made a mistake by straying away from Google's design suggestions.

Don't have an issue with Home Button,

But try:

Settings > Developer Options > Window Animation Scale > Set it to '0.5x' Or 'Off'
AND
Settings > Developer Options > Transition Animation Scale > Set it to '0.5x' Or 'Off'

I have it on 'Off' Speeds up window / application transition a plenty. May work for your Home button.

I agree with Travis. Buttery smooth. The reason the home button has lag is because if you tap it twice it activates s voice. At least that's what I've read.

If you root it, it disappears completely.

I have watched quite a few YouTube vids and the phone surely doesn't appear slow to me. I know with S voice enabled by double pressing the home button that can slow it down a millisecond or two.

Did you try disabling S voice?

I kind of agree with the OP. Its not laggy, but it stutters alot. My Galaxy Nexus was way smoother. And boy do i hate Touchwizz.

Just to clarify, the home button is supposed to be used for multitasking, so you "may" experience a little stutter depending on what is currently in memory. When you hit home it saves the current operation in memory for quick retrieval.
If you hit the back arrow it closes the task and removes it from memory.
Maybe the OP has a lot of tasks running in memory and It's bogging things down.

I have the El TEvo, and its lag free when I use the back arrow, but tends to lag when I multitask too many applications. Any android will eventually do this.

Just to re-iterate what others are saying. The delay on the home button out of the box is to see if you are going to press it a second time to activate S-Voice.

This is a simple fix. Just turn the feature off inside the S-Voice application. Then you will get immediate response. This has been noted for about a month now on forums and in the media.

So the reason for your so called delay is because they purposefully put it into the device to enable a feature.

Hi!

Android Forums is a place for discussion amongst users. Discussions frequently involve differing viewpoints and opinions being expressed. Just because these may not jive with your own does not invalidate them or make them "wrong".

Please either post constructive advice to counter the OP's complaint or don't post at all. Namecalling, cheap jibes etc will not be tolerated here at AF.

Thanks!

And my gnexus was not smooth and that was fresh after a factory reset. I really wish I could say my nexus was a great phone but for me it wasn't. 12 hours with this phone and I'm very impressed.

It's good to know this distinction - I'll keep it in mind when switching screens. Thanks!

Oh, and mine has no lag whatsoever, it's snappy!

With Jelly Bean mine was smooth as butter. I don't know if it's TW or not but my SIII definitely has the jitters.

The poster said it takes 0.5 seconds, 0.5 seconds isn't slow at all so it wouldn't appear slow.

I'm confused, what's the point in this thread?

The home button is tied to 3 events by default Samsung.. voice, task manager, and obvious home. There definitely is the slightest of delay in reaction time I guess if your really picky. I disabled s-voice and it helped. But having just come from the one X; minus the home button, the s3 is noticeably smoother in all other areas.. even with simple things like scrolling. But if the home button is that big of an issue for u, what can u do...

But to come to a forum with the title of the thread as such when the device is probably the fastest phone available in the market, sure makes it seem like a troll alert... just sayin..

I'm no troll. Im a longtime member of HoFo and StangNet (as well as a mod). I disabled S Voice and it definitely helped. As I'd stated, I've already disabled the menu transitions. It's still not instant like an iPhone or EVO, or even my Epic Touch, but it's much better. I can live with it now.

I'm wondering if that lag was out in there to accommodate the transitions also, and they didn't set the lag to disable when transitions are disabled. As I said, it's much better and less noticeable after those fixes so thank you.

As for the title, maybe I should've been specific with the home button, but coming from my other devices, the lag was very very noticeable. I showed several coworkers today, then we compared to the EVO LTE and even the Nexus and they all saw it too. For a flagship device with the highest specs of any Android device, I would expect it to operate at least as well as the EVO LTE. With these fixes, it's pretty close. Sad that you have to disable a main selling point to make it work, though.

Sorry.. by no means was I calling u a troll.. just saying the title probably threw some people off. But as I stated in my previous post, yeah the slightest of delay does exist when the home button is pressed. Doesn't bother me much as using the phone in all other areas proves the s3 to be a pretty powerful phone. Good to hear u got it working better. Even though Samsung was pushing s-voice, I think we all knew before even buying the phone that it was a POS voice recognition feature.. I think I speak for most people when I say I bought the device knowing I wasn't gonna even use the feature.

But anyways, hope u enjoy the phone!
