Latest i9100 modems

Right everybody!

In view of Shotty's lackadaisical attitude, lately, towards the task of updating modems... I have taken it upon myself, with the aid of Hawker and Syd, to bring you a new modem... hand tested by the afore mentioned. :dancing2:

The... BVLP7. :thumb:

It is the modem taken from the latest Samsung Galaxy S2, "P", variant, GT-i9100P on Orange firmware.

I will let Hawker and Syd give you their take on this modem. :five:

As you may know, I have been on the LPX modem for quite some time... because it works for me.

I even tried the LQ5 and LQ6 modems from Android 4.0.4 but, whilst they were the equal of the LPX in good or average signal areas, they let me down at the Twilight Zone pub, notorious for its extremely poor signal.

As with all modems, it's a case of, "One man's meat is another man's poison".

My findings are based on my handset, in the Cotswolds, on Vodafone.

The BVLP7 has proved to offer me a better signal than the LPX in all signal areas so far. I even went to the Twilight Zone for a swift half... just to be sure.

If you would like to give BVLP7 a go and see how it works for you, after a, "bedding in", period of 1 or 2 days, then you can download and install it from here using the, "Modem installation - A Dummies Guide". :hmmmm:

I concur with the old cheese chaser above.....Shotty is a true S2-defecting rat who now likes nothing more than chatting with his S3 toffs on here instead of helping out the people who made him great, sadly demoted to the hoi polloi, namely us S2 degenerates! :D

As for BVLP7, I've been on it now for about a day, and I've found it better than LPX (Orange UK). Not significantly so (as there are usually too many sheep and daffofils between any mast and myself to gain a great signal) but an improvement nonetheless, and any improvement is worth having.

For example, on LPX, in work and at home, my ASU would be in single figures (between 7 and 9) for perhaps 6 times out of 10. Now on BVLP7, my guess is its between 10 and 12 around 6 times out of 10.

Overnight my battery drained 2% in 8 hours, so its not incurring any battery overhead neither (as was the case for me on LPX) so overall, it's now my daily keeper.

Thanks to ironass for assuming Shotty's mantle and pointing this one out to me.

Don't beat about the bush Hawker! Tell him straight. :bawling:

No way am I being responsible for this thread... and get all the abuse from you lot! :pound:

I concur with the 2 stalworts of the gs2 forum, this is a great modem for me, and is staying on my phone.

I have 3 black holes (ahem). One is the local rugby club, hidden below a big hill. Usually patchy, got a strong signal yesterday.

Second, my kitchen, usually poor to no signal. On this is still poor, but for the first time no drop out.

Lastly is deepest Bradford. Previously strong, but would frequently drop out. On this modem, it was consistently strong.

On Vodafone in semi rural Yorkshire.

You've come up trumps Ironass, for me anyway.

Worth a try ladies and gents.

Oh shucks, you're making me blush.
I would pull my finger out but I really like all the attention I get for doing such a poor job.
Note to self: must do better
:D

Oh great sflannery07!

I was hoping for something easy... like an Inuit testing it in Greenland or a Bedouin in the Syrian desert. :ahhhhh:

Well I've given this modem a good run for it's money, granted that those Inuits in Greenland would have it slightly tougher than me, I can nearly say for sure that those rebels in Syria have probably set up make shift cell towers in the desert by now ;)!!

In a nutshell my black spots are still black but my asu is higher and places where there was patchy coverage are stronger overall. I'll be sticking with this one for the time being, thanks fellas for unearthing this one!

Now, back to the sticks!!!!

This was a very quick and dirty comparison of 3 of the latest modems, LPX, LQ6 and BVLP7.

I did not give any of them time to, "bed", in. Instead, the purpose was to flash the 3 in quick succession at my office desk and within a short space of time, as network carriers signals vary throughout the day.

I must stress these results are based on my network carrier and my location and may be entirely different for someone else.

At the end of this post is news of another modem release.

BULP7, not to be confused with BVLP7, is available to flash from here.

This is the modem contained in the latest Vodafone ICS release.

It does not interact, as do some modems, with the Network Info app from the Play Store and so you must rely on... Settings > About phone > Status > Signal strength to obtain accurate readings.

This modem is not just for Vodafone or UK users and may improve your signal. Strangely enough, even though I am on Vodafone UK, my current modem just about edged it into second place. This is not suitable for T variant users.

For more information and details of how to install a modem, see...

Well it's got to be worth a try, a new modem. I'm on Vodafone as well. My signal, although I've never actually measured it, is weird. Back garden full 3G (H+) great, back yard (5yds away) poor GSM signal (G) frequent drop outs and a failure to connect even phone calls. Dining room - no signal most of the time otherwise very, very poor. Front room strong to medium GSM (G) signal. Front bedroom OK 3G (H+) signal. Outside in the street outside my house full 3G (H+) signal. It plays havoc taking a simple phone call. According to the Vodafone network map (which should be taken with a pinch of salt, if not the whole salt cellar) I'm on the boundary between three different masts by the looks of it. Chaos.

Totally confused from Sheffield here (Don't worry, I'm assured it's easy to do)

So BULP7 is the latest Vodafone ICS modem ?

It was just on your screen shots above the last one is definitely titled BVLP7.

That was not the question you asked!

The last screenie is indeed BVLP7... as I stated...

Well I Tried Out Bvlp, And It So Far SeeMs Better At My Work Than Lq6! I'm On O2 Up In Sunny Ayrshire Though!

Nice to see you getting some love on xda, thought they were all a miserable bunch over there.

So do you have fast dormancy on or off these days, or does it depends on your testing/modem?

I usually have it on these days Syd, but I test the modem first to see if its behaving properly. If it is not, I switch it off.

Fast dormancy is either supported or not on Vodafone UK, aren't their forums good at providing answers ? Then I wonder why I never go there except by a Google search.

Fast Dormancy - Vodafone eForum

Turned it off myself, if it eats battery so be it. I drive a van for approx half my working day, I have a charger.

How do I go from this....

(It was -79 dBM and ASU: 17, but when the photo snapped, this is what I got)

to this without out my phone even moving?

Now don't get me wrong I am glad to move from Edge network to H network (which I am normally on), but I am looking at the dBM and the ASU levels. Can someone give me a "dummies" version of why my connectivity is so much stronger on "E" than "H" when it is the same network and the phone is in the exact same position?

Like the images lotsip81!

In a nutshell... the Edge signal carries slower data but can transmit and receive twice, if not more, as far as the HSDPA signal.
