Latest i9100 modems

Since this thread seems quite UK-centric, I thought I'd ask in here for any experiences.

I just did a fresh install of NeatRom Lite LPY w/ Dorimanx kernel 5.87

I'm on T-Mobile UK (London area), looking for any others' experiences for the best modem for me.

I tried:

XXKH3
NELP2
BVLP7

All three seemed quite decent, I am fortunate enough to get a strong signal where I live but occasionally do travel to some known blackspot areas.

In the same particular spot, I get around -85dB, asu:15 with KH3, NELP2.

However, when I tried BVLP7, I got a big jump to around -75dB. This was very welcome but something I noticed was that I'm now seemingly permanently stuck on H signal. It doesn't seem to shift to H+ (like the other modems), and only very briefly does it move to 3G.

Speedtest results show it to be about 4.5Mbps down and 2.3Mbps up. This is actually slower than the other two (KH3, NELP2), both of which posted around 7.5/7.6Mbps! However, these speeds were tested late last night, so maybe it was just contention as compared to when I did the test this early afternoon.

Does anyone else experience the same? I value battery life, phone reception then internet speed (within reason) in that order so any pointers would be appreciated.

Hay, I am kind of new to this whole Modem thing, so sorry if I am asking something silly. But as my battery life has become pathetic and I wanna change my modem. Can you suggest me a good Modem for France?

Phone: Galaxy S2 I9100
ROM:CM 9.1 stable
Location: Paris
Provider: Virgin Mobile

Hello and welcome to Android Forums subhasish9! :)

I am afraid that there is no, one, simple answer to your question.

This thread, entitled, "Modem installation - A Dummies Guide", goes into more detail on how to find the best modem.

Here is a small extract from it...

There is no such thing as, "the best modem". It depends entirely on your location, operator and signal strength. The latest modem may not be the best for you, as I have found out. These are the one's that generally work... KE7, KH3, KI3, KI4, KL1, LPS, LPX, NEKF2, NELP2, NELP3 & BVLP7.

The post goes on to tell you ways of achieving the best signal and how to monitor it as well as download links for modems and installation instructions.

Lads, any new modem available by any chance? Pure curiosity...

You could give BVLPE a go. It's from the latest Orange, Android 4.0.4 release. I spent 4 days with it. It's not bad for me. Closest I've come to BVLP7 but still just behind. Might work better for you though. This is the modem and RIL that I've nicked from Hawker's xda thread entitled, "Modem+RIL CWM Installers". Well worth a read, if you haven't already.

Very Helpful boys. Thanks. The fact my anti spam bot key word was Mickey Finn makes me know I am in the right place. BVLP7 does poke its head above rest in my situation.

Thank you so much. I am gonna try some of these and share my experience in a week. .

Nice one Shotty! :)

You just beat me to that. Glad to see that you are still on the ball old boy!

UPDATE

No difference between the modem I have been using, BVLPE and the new Jelly Bean modem, XXLS6.

Quick and dirty test at my desk at home...

Will give it more time to, "bed in", and test in a few locations... I wonder where?

I'm getting fantastic reception with the XXLS6 modem, at home as well where reception can be awful :

Incidentally according to get RIL my base band and RIL are matching :

Modem XXLS6, from the leaked Jelly Bean firmware, is now added to the, short, ironass list of modems that work for me in the Twilight Zone pub which has a very low, almost non existent, signal.

That list is...

XXLPX

BVLP7

BVLPE

XXLS6

:)

Surely it's not taken you this long to test it, our do you ensure a thorough and prolonged testing period before reporting back?

Blimey! How many times do I have to tell you Syd?...

Testing modems...

1. Test on different days

2. Test at different times of day

3. Test, if it's a pub, all day!

4. Thorough and prolonged testing is desirable.

Besides, the blooming place was flooded for 3 weeks! I was forced to test in other locations. ;)

Lads i dunno WTF, but after flashing this new modem, after restart, my screen would lost all responsivnes. I could only use power off button, did one more restart and same story so i had to reflash rom again.

Anyone else had similiar story?
