good news guys i manage to get to recovery mode, and create a nandroid backup, i push flash_image to /system/bin using root explorer!! i think its easier that way, than just putting on commands, lolz, iam trying to put app to sd card next, so wish me luck guyz!!!

Yay, I did that lastnight!
I try to do everything through root explorer myself, it seems much faster, and I can do it anywhere, don't have to be wired to my computer!

I want to do this but I keep worrying I'll lose my contacts. I hear everyone saying google sync google sync but do I actually have to do anything to set this up or does it run automatically? My gmail account shows all my phone contacts listed in my phone... when I install 2.1 will my contacts just automatically show back up on my phone?

Have any of you moved to this from say fresh 1.1 with gumbo kernel and setcpu. I'm just trying to gauge how "fast" this is 2.1 is. As you all know "fast" is a relative term. Also is wireless tether in this version of 2.1? Is battery life comparable to the above set up? I'm really interested in what those of you have to say that have moved to this 2.1 from fresh with gumbo and setcpu cranked up.

Ok so, so far everything is good. Test of live wp works fine ... helix looks awesome. some wallpaper works more effectively then others. Markets working well ...I can now see the blueant app I was missing a few posts back. Now to find a method of getting app2sd on the phone ...Someone should have already created that wheel out there, someplace ?

Jonathan,
What does the nandroid backup provide ? Is this like a recovery of the phone in its entire state ? Is the recovery image recovering the entire file struction so the phone is back to the same exact point of the time of the backup with every app/setting/contact restored ? Excuse the ignorance but I havent looked into this too much yet ...figured I would ask.

yes the phone is back to the same exact point of the time of the backup with every app/setting/contact restored, in case you trying to do some commands or anything doesnt come the way you want, its a life saver, you knoe, IT RESTORES YOUR PHONE BACK TO THE BEGIINING!! iam glad you manage to get the applications, and the LW< i been trying to GET app2 sd, but not luck yet!!

there use to be a menu that use to tell you sleep time and i dont see this anymore on the hero? was this removed ? it was a way to tell if the phone was actually sleeping or if apps were causing battery issues in the background by keep the phone awake.???

I had good results today with "Helix Launcher" and "Live Wallpaper". I downloaded and extracted the Android SDK originally to do the Market Fix. The Market is working great. All of my purchased apps are represented. I did a push of the Live Wallpaper app to the phone the same way. After downloading Helix launcher and some live wallpapers from the market everything worked great. Some wallpapers do work better than others. The RUU exe approach seems to be fully rooted at least enough to do the fixes and recommended additions. I have been able to run apps for rooted phones so far with no problems. Thanks again for the help here on the forum.

do you mind telling us , what Live wallpapers work the best, i try the star one, but didnt like it so took it off!! lolz

The starfield did not work to good for me. I tried several of the free ones on the market and most of them seemed fine. I realy enjoyed Storm. Kind of neat. I have not spent a lot of time playing with them yet. I will let you know if I stumble across a good one.

Congratz Jonathan, you're picking up all this stuff pretty quick. As for apps2sd, I read through them on xda, but I have been busy all weekend. I will try to see if I can get it going either tonight or in the morning.

As for livewallpapers, creepy crawlers works well, as does the earth wallpaper, google maps wallpaper works well, storm is by far my favorite. I had silhouette working and thought it was simply amazing, then it started having the image get all messed up. Honestly, I mostly leave them off now, unless I leave storm on. I do like that one, but my gears of war 2 and wonderwoman wallpapers are too pretty to look at. :)

Haven't tried google earth, what seems to be the problem, downloading it or having it run properly? I'll try to check that out later too.

I read yesterday on xda that someone from htc leaked the final RUU for us on htc's facebook page. This one doesn't have root though, and I haven't had a chance to look into it yet. Anyone else hear anything about it?

Oh and root explorer is great. I do love it too, but I hate to get dependent on gui. If I make a change, and yes this has happened, that causes a force close loop on me I like knowing how to fix it without having to start all over. I also have a computer background and have loved using Linux since I first discovered it way back when I was still happily married to the first wife. lolz, too much info. :)

Oh, I meant to address the wifi tether question also. No it is not built into the RUU as the RUU comes directly from Sprint and they do not want you to use the phone with wifi tethering, or any tethering at all for that matter. However, once the RUU is on your phone wifi tethering is easily installed. Just make sure you use version 1.6, not any of the newer ones as they will allow your computer to connect but there is no encryption and data is never able to flow to the computer.
Below is the link to the file.

http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wireless_tether_1_60_htc.apk

OK, just read on xda that you need to have Superuser.apk installed, which if you properly root after the RUU you would have it. If you don't want to root properly, just follow these instructions with this file, then install the wireless tether I linked previously.

Put superuser.apk in your C:\AndroidSDK\Tools\
adb remount
adb push superuser.apk /system/app/
