Root Learn to build and mod android for the warplte. Q&A thread

you can use unetbootin or something similar you just need the iso file of the linux os your wanting and a usb it will fit on and it will create a bootable usb which you can boot from in the boot options after that its pretty much just as if it was a dvd you shouldnt have too much trouble doing it
Yeah I don't remember exactly why I was having trouble with it. I didn't have a flash drive or something I think. I have a few around the house now though. Will give a shoot when I get home
i was thinking of maybe installing linux os on a usb so that the whole operating system is on the usb and i dont have to mess with partitions and such anyone have any objections to that? or is that not good for the stuff i'd be doing?
The only issue with that I could think of is maybe the speed of the USB Drive and the amount of space you need to move around files and such. Maybe an external hard drive on the 3.0 USB? ;)
Then again I may not know what the hell I'm talking about lol :D

totally forgot about my old laptop that lcd doesnt work lol ill just load it on that thing :D

In theory it should work if you use an external drive for the source code and build, but it would be better to install it. You would need to use one of the distros mentioned that has the environment set up already.

Mr Smith is correct. Linux, if you choose the right distro is great for dev work. Also you can find repositories everywhere with free programs. I always promote dual boot, because I had issues with Wine. Windows 7 is way better than 8, but Google helped me find quite a few hacks to get rid of the "metro" functions.

i just used classicshell to get the start menu back so it feels more like 7 and pretty much have ignored the metro for laptops disabling the touch pad gestures is a must too they are a pain in the ass

I also have a Windows 8.1 laptop there's no touch screen so metro was a little aggravating at first but I got used to it I grew up playing on Windows computers so this is what I naturally migrated to I guess. Its pretty fast its got 8gigs ram with the core i7 processor. 650gig hd. I never got a chance to do anything Linux yesterday maybe today :p

That would make for a monster Linux laptop. The unit I build cm with is a celeron lol

how do you fix the touch screen being out of wack? like you touch the bottom of the screen and something near the top being selected like its out of calibration

yeah, I just got this HP Touch screen, 8 gigs, quadcore, 1T HD, 1.5 Ghz, I only wish it was expandable to 16 gig. I'm not a gamer (anymore), and I'm about to try this linux out. I may need some lesson',s! lol

Edit: Okay, I burnt the iso to dvd, now, how do I install it? I don't know how to get into the bios on this thing to make it boot from the dvd. any help??

That's what this thread is all about. Helping everyone here do what they want with android/Linux

You can put Linux on any pc. Your cabinetry software on the other hand, maybe maybe not. There is something called Wine that lets you run some windoze apps native. You would have to try it to find out. You could also run windoze as a virtual machine under Linux, but as I mentioned earlier that can be slow. You can also dual-boot windoze and Linux so you pick which to boot when you turn on your pc.

How do I set up the dual boot on this rascal?

just make a partition with like gparted or magic partition wizard you can just leave some unallocated space to install on and make a dvd/cd with the bootable iso on it or make a bootable usb and install on your partition you made not the windows one or install on the unallocated space if thats what you made instead i usually install easybcd beforehand so it can keep track of my installed os's and wont have to use the grub menu for boot options its not required tho

I was just reading about easbcd. I'll grab it, and try it. :D

Edit: Okay, I have Supers ISO on the DVD, (e: drive),, I installed easybcd, I'm lost...... sorry, I don't wanna muck up my new laptop. I'll listen to what ever you tell me, just a little skiddish.

you need something like gparted which is a live cd and can partition your hard drive without windows being loaded up or magic partition wizard which runs while windows runs and when you apply changes it will restart the machine and apply your changes to make the partition all you really have to do is shink your C drive enough to have linux installed on the unallocated space left over after the shrinking to be more safe you can also get a recovery disk for your os so that if you do happen to mess up the boot you can fix it easily

you can search on youtube so you have an idea what your doing beforehand which is always good lol

That's gparted. Burn the iso to a DVD, and use it to resize your windows partition. Your going to want to resize it so that there is a minimum of 10 gigs of unallocated space. Once that is done boot SuperR's live CD and the ubiquity installer will guide you the rest. Select guided partitioning, and then use unallocated space. It may ask you if you want to install grub to the MBR. If it does select yes. After that you are done. When you reboot a menu should come up asking if you want to boot into Ubuntu or windows (typically referred to as loader by grub)

As an added note I would suggest letting the installer set up a / (root) and home partition rather than installing all in one partition.

just an idea maybe it seems dumb but i think it would be kinda neat if you guys that know some of this stuff would stream a bit while your doing your work so we can watch and see how things are done and maybe you could explain some of the stuff and what effects the changes you make are doing exactly and we can interact with you guys in chat while you do it maybe ask questions as to what your doing in your project again just an idea that i personally think would be a pretty neat thing to watch

There are tons of how to videos on the web. When I started out my thoughts were always "Well that's great butt head, but it's not working for me" lol. There is an irc channel on freenode dedicated to msm8930 devices.

talking to ppl about things i know very little about because of the 80% useless videos ive watched doesnt help out too much lol idk about everyone else but im just saying it would be nice to watch someone that is actually developing things for a device i own and see how they go about things you know just a live stream of things your already doing anyway lol

FYI, the Ubuntu installer will repartition windoze, no need for the gparted cd. It gives you the option to replace it or install alongside it. The alongside it option repartitions windoze and installs Ubuntu ;)

im about to install that mint iso you had linked onto my busted up laptop lol unfortunately imma have to give up my tv/monitor to try it out D: meh shows!!

I should also mention that Ubuntu live has gparted, so if you want to repartition everything manually, just boot the os and run gparted. You can also install the os while running it live.

I've downloaded and installed Ubuntu Live, and it changed the boot, It asks to choose windows or Ubuntu, I choose Ubuntu, and I get this page that says it's missing a file. What did I do wrong or not do? I have the (extracted) iso dvd in the dvd drive while booting, still nothing. I've tried it with, and without the dvd.
Missing this file: \ubuntu\winboot\winbildr.mbr
