Root Learn to build and mod android for the warplte. Q&A thread

It is super easy if you just install through the Ubuntu installer instead of trying to install through windoze. Boot to Ubuntu live, install alongside windoze, done. This will be the last time I mention this as you all seem to have your own ideas about how to install it ;)

Not me Super, I'm just Relly, Relly confused!lol

Wow I been away for a min I got linux mint 17 all set up on my laptop and wiped out windows. I love it...

My pc is a Hp Envy dv6 with and A10 processor and 8 gigs of RAM... This machine is like a rocket now I mean it was before too but I like it way better and everything I need I can find on mint and as far as I have seen on the net there are work arounds to playing your games it is just not as easy as install and play. Thanks SuperR for putting me onto linux.

Ubuntu and mint are a little heavy for an older unit. I would suggest either lubuntu ( I think that's the lxde variant) or bohdi ( Ubuntu variant with E19). I personally run the testing branch of Debian with razor qt, but that take a little more time to set up
You can run linux mint 13 on an xp machine and it runs good depending on memory but the minimum is 512mb - 1G recommended... 512 memory still runs it good.

My laptop is almost the same as yours Bizzerk, should I try Linux mint?

Oh crap! Please help me Super. I just bought this new laptop, (windoze 8.1 I f_ cking hate). Can I put Linux on this? and will it run my cabinetry software? PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZE help me get rid of this Microsoft nightmare!
Here is a guide to change the secure boot in your bios of your windows 8 preinstalled machine. You can duel boot or just delete windows and install your distro...

How to: Dual-boot (preinstalled) Windows 8 and Linux - UEFI etc.

I'v been stopping by now and again and have been trying to figure out myself how I want to go about running linux. My laptop is also W 8.1 and the duel boot thing seems pretty sketchy to me. Wiping windoze is out of the question on top no dvds or big enough flash drives for backups atm. hmm I wonder if that old xp desktop I have upstairs would be suitable? I'd wipe that. Its really old like 40gb hd and 1 gig of ram(was 2 but something goes wrong when 2 is used) changed the cpu to the maximum that board could handle(forget what it was
Wouldn't mind giving the virtual machine a shot on the ideapad though. You guys said It could be a lil slow but I'm just trying to test the waters I guess. I still wouldn't know what quite to do once I got that running

Read this... You only need 5G of hard drive space and Min 512kb ram...

That old one I think will work try it. It's old to you anyway so if it messes up you still got your good computer. Personally I think Linux may make it run smoother than windows.[/URL]

tHATS WHAT MINE WAS SHOWING AS WELL (Win7???????) (sorry)
It gives me 4 options:
Win 8.1
Neolinux (or what ever Neo something or other is)
Neolinux
Win7.
I scroll it up to win 8.1, like if I was in safemode or something, and it will go to windows.
I've looked at the site Super posted 10 easy steps........... nope, not gonna try it.
I hate win 8, I hate this laptop. I just wanted to try out Ubuntu, now I got a pile 'o shit on my hands, and I've got to pay somebody to clean this mess up. I didn't think it would have been this difficult. Oh and if you duel boot it is suggested to install windows first or already have it installed because if you have linux installed first windows will write over grub...

I know, some of you guys are laughing saying, (Frigging idiots!). I just don't want to f-_k up a brand ew laptop. I have restore disks, and all that, (I ain't that dumb, dehr!). bUT i DON'T WANT TO MUCK UP WHAT i CAN'T AFFORD TO HAVE FIXED HERE IMMEDIATELY EITHER! G-damned small ass keyboard! sorry
The best solution for both of those problems are to go through linux forums to find a good answer. I have seen on there and I'm not sure exactly where but there is a couple of tutorials and fixes for booting windows and linux duel boot and I believe it had something to do with making them both duel boot in Grub Bootloader. Grub is the problem... Try something like boot windows and linux from grub bootloader...

Try searching here...

Look here if you want to replace xp with linux it will probably run way better if you ask me. Keep windows on your other pc...

Ok yeah. that computer if it crashes and burns I wouldn't give it a second thought :smokingsomb: I will have to find a disc to boot to. I will try out the one you posted or one that my system requirements meet.

I would try 13 and if it runs super smooth just check the system requirements on other upgraded distro's. From what you said you had in the old laptop I think 13 will run super smooth. Preferred memory is 1G and a 80G hard drive is plenty to start which is what you have so it should run well. First thing to do when installing linux update it fully. Then look for all the tools you need for dev work or what is not already installed which is not much. My win 8.1 was running pretty smooth but was a little buggy when it came to dev work which is what I like doing so I just went to linux I may decide to duel boot later on but I'm good right now with just the distro. Oh and not to mention everything on linux is free. You don't have to pay for software...

So I'm about to go get desktop my good ol' grandma just gave me. Its newer than the desktop I have and I know for a fact it has at least 2gb ram and I think a 80 gig hd I'm kinda at a standstill anyway till I find a medium to put the iso on. ..I was dam sure I had a dvdr somewhere around here..I shall return. ;)

So I have the Machine and am going to check out the system specs when I set it up and get it fired up. I found a couple dvdrs and I downloaded the 14.04 LTS Ubuntu 32 bit desktop OS iso. I haven't burned any images yet. It says it would run with a 2gig ram system.
I'm also downloading 13 maya cinnamon. Which one would you recommend? I'm thinking either one of those. (leaning towards 14.04 lts)

But I'm still a little confused. Is this iso going to give me the option of a side by side install? or is there different installation methods once I boot to the cd? I think I may just be a little lacking of information about which downloads do what exactly.

Either one of those would be good bro you would have to see which one would run better. 13 will run good but Im sure 14 will too. When you boot into cd to install yes it gives you the option to install alongside windows or erase windows and install linux. If the desktop came with windows 8 you will have to go into bios and turn off secure boot. It explains how to do it in one of the links I posted above. Make sure you are hooked into internet when you install. You don't have to be but the installation will go a lot smoother with drivers and all.

Actually, I had to boot to superR's cwm flasher on my windows 8.1 laptop. but na the dell inspiron 530s vista desktop is from 2008. Trying to get it hooked up and check It out. I think its going to make an awesome linux machine. And I will probably need to take it upstairs to hook it up ethernet till all drivers are good
dam I only see 1g ram (2*512 but upgradable to 4 though) ;) 250g hd and a 2.o ghz celeron.

ok Im thinking 13 because I only have 1g ram. 14 suggest using at least 2gig ram.

Windows 8.1 has more than three partitions on the hard drive...so you just can't do a auto download and install with Ubuntu or linux mint on Windows 8. You have to manually partition for home..root.. and swap. Plus Win 8 has a UEFI?

I did not have to manually partition anything when I wiped windows 8.1 and put linux it partitioned for all of the above on its own when I chose replace windows with linux. You have to do that when you duel boot I believe but not when you replace windows. All you have to do with the UEFI is disable secure boot as I stated above with a tutorial. My machine is also UEFI...

Here's a screen shot of my disk...

Just go with mint 13 until you upgrade the computer and then go for bigger. Shoot all you need to upgrade is more ram...
