Root Learn to build and mod android for the warplte. Q&A thread

Windows 8.1 has more than three partitions on the hard drive...so you just can't do a auto download and install with Ubuntu or linux mint on Windows 8. You have to manually partition for home..root.. and swap. Plus Win 8 has a UEFI?

Definitely not trying that one as of yet. I actually use this laptop for college books and to play games and to do various other things right now. Maybe when it gets a lil older :)

Just go with mint 13 until you upgrade the computer and then go for bigger. Shoot all you need to upgrade is more ram...

just burned 13 iso to a dvd. I just have to set up the ol inspiron somewhere round here. may have to wait a while til i get some things done.I'll probably hook the ethernet cable up too to make sure the drivers and whatever is installed. I remember this computer running so slow before, i'm really curious how much better it will preform.

Ya I'm even curious so be sure to let us know. I know my laptop runs a lot faster and smoother.

Well guys, I did it. I locked up my laptop tight as a tick last night. I had to do a complete restore.
Well, I'll start over. I think the easybcd messed me up. I'll start over and do it like Bizzerk did. Lol, oh well.

I want Windows 8 and linux mint but anyway got a hold of a windows 8 recovery disk...ran recovery...system restore did not work...ran hard disk and system check... everything passed...Windows detected errors ...fixed errors...needed system files...restored files...and you guess it...reformatted my windows partition (my whole f**kin hard drive) and now I have Windows back but nothing else!

so I plugged in the vista machine and fired it up and started ok, It froze up a few minutes later when I was looking at all the dam sponsor-ware installed on it (and probably has a virus) time to smash it with Linux! :secruity: this thing has a freaking ton of dust caked up in there going to clean that stuff out, it may have over-heated seeing all the dust on the cpu heat sink. will keep you guys posted

sb43 and bee1, that stinks you guys had to start over but at least you can start over and you didn't destroy your pcs. When you guys get it running and depending on how it goes for you guys, you never know I might attempt to make this a duel boot laptop.(after some thorough reading up) ;)

umm yeah I would say there was some dust in there lol. when I pulled the cooling fan off... IMG_20140612_221652_848[1].jpg

Well its a done deal. after I cleaned the dust out, It no longer would freeze up. got ride of windowz completely. now what?? lol na I'll figure it out
Oh and yes its runs waay smoother but I just started messing round with it I like it :)

If your wondering how I did it MY steps were.

Burned Linux 13 mint iso to a DVD using my laptop and imgburn.

Started up my desktop(dell 530s) and got into bios and set the boot priority to CD/DVD drive.

Put the DVD in the ol dell and restarted and booted to the disk.

It ask me how I wanted to use Linux. There were options on how to install. Side by side, erase windows completely and install Linux, and I think another option.

I choose to to erase windows and install Linux.
It did it's thing and Linux is now the os of that desktop. :)

Never tried duel boot so not sure if that could be the problem.

Do you mean you can't get it to boot? What method are you using with what distro?

Not sure how to answer these lol

Sorry Just flustered tonight

It is way easier to install linux on a older pc though Wizaired no secure boot. I have read on a bunch of forums that easybcd is not good to use it may not play well with your bios sb43. Give me a call later and I will help you get it sorted out. From what your pics look like it was the same problem I was having with secure boot.

Ok computers differ but this is how I turned off secure boot in my hp dv6 BIOS... When my computer is booting up I press esc then I press f10 for Bios settings. Then go to system config...
IMG_20140614_095321_234.jpg

and go to boot options. Now go down and disable secure boot and enable legacy support... I also cleared all secure boot keys...

As I said this may vary on other computers but should be about the same options.
This is for computers that come with windows 8 installed. After I did this I had no more boot problems after linux was installed. If you turn legacy off and secure boot back on linux will not boot. They are working on a Kernal right now that is supposed to work with secure boot. The latest one is 3.15 and I believe linux mint 17 installs a update with the 3.13 if you choose to install it so you will have to look up 3.15 Kernal deb and install it manually. You do not have to upgrade the Kernal but I recommend doing so though linux even runs smoother.

EDIT: Here is a read up on the 3.15 Kernal and the changes...

Heres where you can grab the kernal deb files...

WoW the

distro looks pretty nice.

Bodhi Linux

System Requirements

What do I need to run Bodhi?

The minimum requirements to run Bodhi Linux are only: 300+MHz CPU, 128MB RAM, and 2.5GB hard drive space!

Whoa I'm going to check that out. The mint 13 still doesn't seem that fast on the dell 530s lol. I mean til I get some ram n stuff anyway :)

I am glad to see you guys are enjoying Linux. IMO you are looking in the right places by staying with Ubuntu-based distros. Hopefully by now you have realized that for the most part Linux is try before you buy. So grab all the distros you want, put them on a usb drive, and give them a test run. Once you decide what you like, install it ;)

edit: Here is a nice list of Ubuntu-based distros. This list is not complete but will give you an idea of the popular ones.

Yes I have checked out a lot of them lately but I still am stuck on mint 17 it is awesome... I do however like some of the others as well. Slackware is pretty nice too and so is Debian

For those who were wondering what happen with my os. After windows reformatted my hd, I only had 2 partitions, Windows and Recovery. I shrank volume of C: for 150gb. Downloaded Linux mint, used Usb installer to burn iso to a usb flash drive, boot from usb chose something else, chose my empty 150gb to use for linux mint. Then I was prompt to create root / and how big in gb I chose 30. Create swap 10 gb and home 110gb with equal to 150 gb which I have. From there keyboard user name and password. Reboot system have dual-boot again, still have to shift restart to get grub. This was my not broke don't fix problem!

IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!!!,
My Good friend (now) Bizzer and I have been tring to put Linus on my machines for the past 3 days now. And FINALLY, i have Linux on my desktop. It's doing a bunch of updates now. I don't know if it's too late for this but if you got a computer you can download and burn this it may help.
