LG Ally upgrade

Hey I'm looking to upgrade from an LG Ally. I am thinking of Droid 3, Droid X2 or Droid Bionic(last only because of price). Any suggestions?

Well theres a 3g and 4g difference between the 2. You also have to think about which one will go further into development and if your going to lose features you like on the ally (for instance tethering) i also tell people, why buy this fancy phone when you have no use of the advanced hardware capabilities, will you use the phone to the fullest capacity for the price you pay?

I am a power android user. I only got the Ally because I had to and haven't been pleased with its limited power. I do get 4g in my area but don't think it's that big of a deal since I use wi-fi most of the time. My biggest concern is the full keyboard. I heard the droid 3 keyboard is fantastic but the display is just so so. I know there are a bunch of new phones coming out soon; Vigor, nexus prime, droid hd. But the ones that are out now are still worlds better than my Ally.

I absolutely love Deus Ex. Have you played the new one?

I've played a few hours of the new Deus Ex. It's pretty good, one of my favorites, but not as ground breaking as the original.

IMO, the people that are complaining about the screen are trying to find something to complain about. I've spent time with the D3, and compared to my Ally, the display is ever so slightly less crisp, but it's still good. Definitely not something I'd walk away from.

I am starting to realize I really do prefer having a keyboard so I think I'm swaying towards Droid 3 although I do like how sweet the DX2 looks and the big display. Is it that big of a difference between the two in regards to screen size/clarity?

The Samsung Stratosphere will have both a qwerty board and AMOLED display. I am seriously thinking about that one. Before that I had decided on a Droid 3. But I won't upgrade til next year, so I'm hoping to see some reviews on the Stratosphere first.

I'm looking at that one right now as well, but it's only a single core 1Ghz CPU, and has 512M RAM. There are rumors of a quad-core Motorola device (Motorola Jet) that's supposed to be 4G LTE, 1-1.5GB of RAM, and have a QWERTY keyboard. it's supposed to be released the 1st quarter of 2012.

That sounds pretty nice. One thing I would like to learn is how upgrading to a 4G phone affects the contract of those of us who still have the unlimited data plan? If I would have to switch to the new rates of tiered data service, I probably would stay with 3G phones instead. Our rural area doesn't have 4G anyway. The reasons I would look at 4G phones would be for the other features offered, like an AMOLED display (which I have waited for since the very first article I read about the technology).

Even if you upgrade from 3G to 4G and switch back to 3G you keep your data plan. You're grandfathered in.

That's good news! Thanks!

I was talking to our son last night about it. He just got a Bionic, and had been using a Droid X on our family plan. He moved to his own plan with the Bionic to get a nice discount on the phone using a plan offered through his employer. So he had to 'start a new account' in the process. He said that the basic 2GB data plan for his new account still wasn't expensive under the new tier system. IIRC like $29 a month. He never uses that much data monthly so was happy as such.

The upside for me is that I'm about to inherit his Droid X to play with. :)

It still has 2 months of service, so fully functional. I want to see how badly I would miss having a qwerty pad, which could open additional options for my next upgrade if I can live without one.

Just saw the Droid RAZR announced today. Looks pretty sweet but I don't know if my phone will make it till then. This phone has really become horrible with its limited memory and storage. My actual upgrade is not until April so if I could wait that long I would get the Motorola Jet, but I'm getting very sick of this phone and it doesn't work properly anymore. I need some help guys!

Cowboom.com has the original A855 Droid on sale for $59.99 for Today's DOTD.
(deal expired, so I removed the link(10-19-11))
That might get you by until upgrade time if you're really in a bind.

Both of our phones are off of craigslist used. Wipe the OS and your good. I think abuse (dropping, water, etc) destroys phones much more than normal use. 2 years of use and age is really nothing for electronics as long as they were not obviously abused. I have 30 year old computers that work fine still.

I played with the Stratosphere today at the Verizon store. 4G is simply amazing. Blistering fast downloads and uploads-it's even faster on speedtest.net's app than my home DSL. The keyboard is as good as the Ally IMO, and is the best keyboard available on Verizon right now-much better than the Droid 3. Operation was smooth and lag free-flash websites load nice and quick, with no jerkiness, etc, and it benchmarked pretty good for a stock phone. Quadrants were in the high 1300's, and Linpack scores were mid 17's. I'd be curious to see one of these rooted, debloated and overclocked a bit. Overall, I'm impressed.

That all sounds good! I don't suppose there was any way for you to test it on a 3G signal while you were looking at it?? If I get one, we don't have 4G here. The small stores in our rural area rarely have the phones in stock I am wanting to see, so I have ordered directly online for my last 3 phones. Plus the store personnel don't seem to be very knowledgeable in this area.

I wish they would stop coming out with so many new phones so fast.....I just got this phone last year and already its outdated....How will I ever be happy with my phone purchase?

I didn't see any way to shut off 4G and lock it into 3G, but there was a handy little widget in the notification bar that allows you to turn off all data. That will definitely come in handy for those that have the capped data plans.

The secret to contentment is to ignore that carrot dangling in front of you. Applies to all things. :D If you are content with what you have in hand the moment you acquire it, focus on that.

I suppose the only way to truly test it would be to use it where 4G is not provided. Thanks. :)

Nevermind just found my next phone guys. Did you see the leaked pictures of the Droid 4? Phone looks absolutely fantastic and it has 4g. I feel bad for anyone that bought the Samsung Stratosphere already.

That's the same phone they were code naming Maserati. I couldn't believe it has a non-removable battery.

How apple.
