Root LG Viper and the Connect

sammyz

LG Whiz Kid
Not sure why none of you thought of this before.....
The LG Viper and LG Connect are more similar than the Connect and Lucid. Why I am saying this is because the Internal Storage size on the Connect and Viper are the same.
LG Lucid (VS840)
LG Viper (LS840)
LG Connect (MS840)

Differences:
Screen
Lucid: IPS LCD
Connect: LCD
Viper: TFT
Internal Memory
Lucid: 8GB
Connect: 2GB
Viper: 2GB

LG Lucid vs LG Connect 4G vs LG Viper 4G LTE - Phone specs comparison

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure you could easily use the source kernels from the Viper/Lucid to get yourselves a good ICS kernel.
I don't see ICS source for the Lucid on the LG's page (yet), but I do see ICS source for the Viper on LG's site: opensource.lge.com
Select Mobile then type LS840 and get yourself some ICS kernel source.
I'm not sure why all of you are wanting to port when a phone very similar to it already has some source that you guys need and could use.

it doesn't compile or work somthing like that idk. people have tried

Why won't it? I had an error compiling the LG Motion's source and I google'd the error, it compiled fine after I did what it said to.....does it have something to do with piggy???

Edit: now I'm gonna reboot into Ubuntu just to try to compile it myself....just waiting on a download real fast though.

idk nut i noticed 2 inconsistoncies with the link about the connect
1. Connect has a 1500mAh not 1540
2. Connect has 242 pixel density not 233 like the other 2 phones.
and i believe the viper is running 2.3.7 while we are on 2.3.6

Are you sure the viper isn't running 2.3.7 because of updates???

i said it is running 2.3.7 but the connect is running 2.3.6

I know you said that.....but are you sure that it didn't originally come with 2.3.6???? It could have with 2.3.6 when first released and then later on they could have started releasing them with 2.3.7

So this config file exists in the config folder of the ICS LS840ZVI kernel:
cayman_mpcs_us_defconfig
I'm gonna build that one.

Edit: that didn't last long...
gonna try this cayman_sprint_us_defconfig

Edit: well this one is building just fine. (thus far)

There was an error with /lge/include/board_lge.h
copied board_lge.h to /include/linux and it fixed that error...

also in leds-pmic8058.c changed
#include <../../lge/include/board_lge.h>
to
#include <linux/board_lge.h>

Im willing to test for you but i dont even know what you did lol
what did you just build?
btw already downloaded, so once you tell me what it is, and what will i be looking for once i flash it, i will

You have to first make it flashable, I can do that for you...it's the ICS kernel from the Viper.....

Edit: you won't see a change of anything....I just need to know if touchscreen works and if it still boots...make a backup first.

You'd have to cuz idk how... and to think you did that in such a short period of time. I doubt its going to work but im still going to try it. Just made a backup

So what's this? We just need a working ICS kernel and then maybe somebody can slop an ICS ROM together for our Connects? I'm liking this

You need an ICS kernel before you can get a ROM....I don't know how to build ROMs, but building a kernel from source is simple (editing source to get around errors is also simple). Making your own source is difficult, you must know C+ and C++. I'm not great at building ROMs but you do need a kernel before you go and build a ROM.

Ok well this is weird, i just realizd its a kernel... so i installed it as a rom and it just went back to default... im going to try one more time give me a sec

Alright well it boots! and touch screen works!!
I installed this over ROM Number 2 w/ Black Plague kernel.
Under "ABOUT PHONE"
It still says Rom Number 2 and Black Plague kernel

Dont think so.. This is after installing the kernel you uploaded...
