Root Linux for android

Hello, Not only am I new to Android, I am also new to rooting. A friend told me about rooting my Android and running a Linux os on it. Can this be done, and if so, what flavor of Linux is recommended?

Also, if not using Linux, how do I decide what root to go with?

Thanx to anyone that can help me into the right direction.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you can get ubuntu running on it. here check this thread out:[Ubuntu Image] 1st really working simple to install Ubuntu on your phone - xda-developers.

and there are only two ways to root your phone and it will depend on your hboot (power off then press and hold power+vol down) at the top is your hboot version.

if you are 2.10 or below then use this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html

if you are 2.15 or 2.16 then use this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

if you are talking about roms on your phone then i would start out with mikg2.59. it is very fast and stable. plus it has sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 built in. you can get it on the roms/kernel sticky.

Thanks... Here is what is shown on my HBOOT screen

You are running gingerbread.

I would suggest reading over the first couple of posts in the rooting for dummies gingerbread guide at the top of this forum

Yeah I knew it was GB, and there is quite the setup to get full root. I was trying to decide whether to try the switch to Linux OS or another version of android ROM. My buddy said that he is running Linux, didn't say what flavor, but said that he is getting like 4 to 5 days of charge with heavy heavy usage. Like 7000 to 8000 txts and online usage. I just don't know if he was talking sh*# or not. But I do know that Linux doesn't use alot of battery power.

When rooted, with different ROM and tweaks, does battery life and signal strength(3/4G and call) get better?

I dont have any experience with putting linux on the phone, but I can try to address some of your other questions....

Battery life- You will see improvement in battery life when you root. You can flash custom kernels that will allow you to undervolt the battery, overclock the processor to speed things up, and underclock the processor to slow things down when it is not in use. You wont get 4-5 days, but 18-36 hours seems to be pretty common.

Signal strength: This can be improved by ensuring you have the latest radios flashed (you do), but ROMs do not have an effect. I'm confident linux wouldnt either.

Personally......
I would look into rooting and trying a "normal" ROM first before trying out linux.
Check out MikG. The current version is 2.59 and is available in the ROMS & Kernels download page. This ROM is very fast, stable, and has everything working.
As far as kernels I'd suggest either more freedom or aggressive freedom universal. The only difference between the two is the amount of undervolting.

With changing the ROMs, does this change the GUI of the phone? Or will it still look as the factory? I'm assuming that these ROMs are the way the creator wants them to look. If I'm understanding ROMs correctly, they fall into like 3 different categories correct? All depending on what the intent they were designed for.

Most roms tend to stick to what is familuar. However not all do. AOSP are much different than Sense ROMS. IMO AOSP is much better. End the end each will have thier own experiance. As far as battery life is concerned its really like this:
How good of a Signal do you get with your phone? If you have a crappy signal you will have crappy battery life. IF you have a lot of programs running in the back ground your battery will suffer. There are all kinds of other factors into good battery life as well.

I would recommend you try out several different roms we have a bunch of post in here about all kinds of roms so you should be able to find out the 411 on any rom you want to try.

If Fedora has a linux version of a phone os i would try that personally. Love my Fedora :D

Most custom ROMS are ported from other phones. So they are the "stock" of that phone optimized to ours. This way we can get sense 2.1, 3.0, 3.5, and soon the new android version 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) on our old Evo's.

There are many themes available for most ROMS that allow you to customize things to your liking.

Most have screenshots in the OP

FYI, recently announced Ubuntu is coming to mobile devices (officially). Though, if we are to get technical, Android *is* already linux.

And I would have to question that 4-5 days with heavy usage. Most people are quite impressed (at least, a while back) with reports of 40-50hrs battery life.

Best battery life I'be had is with MIUI and tiamat SBC 4.0.8
I am at 23 hours and still at 30% with moderate heavy usage, sync off, underclocked to 768, screenoff profile 128/245, v6 supercharger setting 8. It is fast and stable, and probably the most customizable Tom out there and the easiest way to leave sense for aosp and still have eye candy.
