Root Looking for information

pcdroid

Newbie
Greetings everyone,

First I would like to thank everyone who reads this thread and posts on it to help me out.

I am trying to find a full gingerbread install for my droid x.
I currently running the latest froyo update from verizon. I have rooted my phone using zroot and installed droid x bootstrapper to make a recovery of my phone.

The current problem I have is trying to find a 2.3 install and the best way to install it. I am pretty savy on reading instructions and trying to get anything to work.

I have looked all over the forums and the only problem I have is trying to download the 2.3 install.

Any help y'all could provide would be awesome.

Again thank you for taking time out to read this post and help out a noob on trying to make his dreams come true.

Ok this might be a stupid question,

I looked at it for the sbf and it says 2.3.340.

My understanding is that number is the system version. My system version says that but going down to Android Version, its 2.2.1.

Could you guys/gals double check my thought process for me?

I could be completely wrong and just having an early morning moment.

2.3.340 is the System version of the files, but it is still Froyo. The System version of my Gingerbread rom is 4.5.573

Oh ok. That makes sense. Thank y'all very much. I will be going to gingerbread tonight from froyo. Hopefully I don't make any mistakes. I will keep you guys informed.

Ok so update.

The version of the sbf I got was not gingerbread, it was froyo. Which is fine so that sets me back to ground zero.

The problem I am now having is trying to find a gingerbread sbf that isnt rooted. The ones that I can download require me to be on gingerbread to use them. If I could use them then that would be great but I cannot get a leaked gingerbread sbf.

Am I looking or doing something wrong?

There is no Gingerbread SBF file...what you need to do is root your Froyo...then buy the DROID X Bootstrapper from the market...

Then you're going to download the pr-rooted Gingerbread .zip file and place it on your sdcard...

Then using bootstrapper you're gonna flash gingerbread like you would a rom...

Ok so I use zroot, i have the droid x bootstrapper. I download the pre-rooted gingerbread zip and mount it to sd card. reboot with bootstrapper and install from SD card and it should work?

The information I am reading at MyDroidWorld says I should already be on gingerbread before I go to rooted gingerbread.

It seems I am getting alot of mixed results.

Are you talking about installing the rooted GB or the deodexed GB??...if you want to install the rooted GB you want to start with a rooted Froyo...

Can you show me a link where it says to be on GB before installing rooted GB??

I am reading this thread, hopefully the link will post,

Droid x (2.3.3) Gingerbread - Deodexed and Rooted

and then there is this thread:

Droid X Gingerbread (2.3.3) - Release - PreRooted

I feel like I am pretty smart at reading what people say but maybe I am confused on what each one will give me.

Again thank you for taking time out of your schedule to help a newbie wanting to be better.

Ok, what you're going to do is root your Froyo with z4root...you're going to use the file you get from the SECOND thread you posted to flash you're phone to GB...it will already be rooted...

Now about the first link...that is for a DEODEXED version of GB...basically what that means is the file structure is changed around so that you can apply themes to change the way your phone looks...other than that...no real benefit for you...

Custom ROMS will come deodexed so that you can apply themes to them...

What you need to do is follow the instructions from the SECOND thread...and then we can talk about if you want to flash the deodexed version or not(I have not, im waiting for ApeX 2.0)

Metfanant,

Thank you very much. That makes sense. I am downloading the file now and will go from there. Do I need the Droid 2 bootstrap or is the Droid X going to be ok?

I believe that if you turn off USB debugging that the DROID X bootstrapper will work...but the D2 bootstrapper will work completely fine...

You will use the DX bootstrapper to flash GB though....the D2 bootstrapper only comes into play once you have GB installed...

Ok so I got the rooted gingerbread installed on my phone. Its much faster than froyo which makes me excited and its very stable.

Question, if I do a factory restore will that reset the phone to a clean gingerbread? or will it set me back to froyo. I sent a text message and the other person asked if i meant to say that. What they put in as my "response they got" was different from what I typed.

Is that a known problem?

If you do a factory restore it will take you to a fresh Gingerbread install.

I have not had any problem with text message, other than the auto correct (which has burned me a few times). I send between 25 and 50 a day with my wife and kids. Check your message and see if what you show you sent was correct, I would bet auto correct struck you on that.

If you put the version on that was already rooted you should remain rooted. If you have the version that you later applied the root to, you would have to do that again.

I think I am going to do a factory reset. The version I installed is the pr-rooted version.

My sync icon had been running since I installed gingerbread.

Plus my battery doesn't last very long even while using juice.

If you mean juice defender on GB, then juice doesn't work correctly on GB.

And a non compatible Juice defender can actually eat up your battery.

My Battery has been super on GB I don't use the X much but I've had it on and setting in my backpack for a day and its still at 80% after 19+ hours

To recap what I just read (trying hard to make 45 year old synapses work...)
If I am running the rooted GB (I'm running BlurryBread by Rubix), If I do a factory reset, I will go back to a fresh install of what I had installed (BlurryBread), just not with all the Krap I have muddied it up with. Am I correct in that statement?
That would be awesome if correct, cause I made a few bad choices and somehow my music player randomly turned itself on today and my speaker isn't working. Hope this isn't a hardware issue, cause that would suck.

Another question, can I revert to Maderscok from GB? Or do I have to SBF?

Update:
Speaker issue was a hardware related one, there was apparently a piece of something in my earphone port. I plugged a set of 'phones into it and the speaker miraculously fixed itself after removing the plug.... Go figure.
