so do i need to update to 2.2 before i load custom rom or just drop the rom file on sd card and go into recover and click load update or whatever?

If you want to install a froyo ROM you'll need to DL the DK28 modem and use Odin to install it. Search on xda for it (or I can get you a link tomorrow).

Alternately, you could do the update.zip method (which will unroot your phone AND update the modem).

The battery percentage mod will only with on deodexed ROMs. Leaving the phone "stock" without flashing a new ROM won't allow you to use the BPM.

You could always use an app like systray monitor.
