Help Low memory and other issues after update!

evo4g815

Newbie
Hi all, first post, just want to say seems like this is a great community!

So last night (Nov 8) I did a software update that came out on the Evo. After downloading and installing the software, my phone is now a mess. I immedietely got the "low on space" icon. I just have a few games and stuff, but I've never had the message before. It's showing I have 48mb free. Now I try to move my apps to my SD card to see if I can get the message to go away, and even though it shows me having used only 1.8gb, with 5.6gb free, I get an alert stating:

"Failed to move application. There is not enough storage left"

What the heck happened? Clearly something failed during the update, or the update was full of bugs. I'm also now consistently getting a "google.process.gapps" force close error every 30 seconds or so when my screen is on. This is seriously driving me nuts!

Is there a way to restore back to a previous software version? Needless to say, I'm not happy right now, and I need to have a properly working phone all day long while I'm at work.

Welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Unfortunately, there's not a way to downgrade the os version unless you root the phone:(

Is your version 4.54?

My guess is that you weren't having these issues before the upgrade?

have you tried going to manage applications in menu>settings, and moving the applications back to internal memory? Then after you do that, reboot the phone. Then try and move the applications back to the sdcard

That's correct, no issues before this upgrade. I just called Sprint and they were useless, told me to just take it to a store.

How do I move apps back to internal memory? I see the option to move to the SD card, but no option to move to internal memory.

If you hit the same button, it should move the apps back to internal memory

"Failed to move application, there is not enough memory left"

This is ridiculous. My phone won't update location for weather and some apps won't even open anymore because they keep force closing. I'm not paying $80\month for this BS. I'm going to take it to a Sprint store next week when I get back from work, but if it doesn't work I'm demanding a new Evo. I've only had it for 6 months

All they will tell you to do will be to do a hard reset. Which will take you back to factory settings with everything wiped. You will still have the same 4.54 and still have GB 2.3.3 so.............if you want to start over, it's pretty simple but it can be time consuming;)

If I do a hard reset though, and the phone screws up again (which is possible since it seems to be a very common problem), than what's the point of continuously resetting the phone and losing all my data that was on there?

I did a google search for this low memory icon, or "memory leak" and it's amazing how many people have this issue, and even more amazing that HTC has not come up with a fix yet

Prior to doing a hard reset you can back everything up w/ Mybackup and restore everything after you've reset your Evo.

Ok, seriously, HELP!!!!!! Now I can't even TEXT! WTF!?!?!?!?!?!? My Evo is telling me I only have 16mb free all of a sudden. I'm still on the road for work, but I'm going to call Sprint and tell them I'm not paying for these past couple days because my phone has been useless besides phone calls. This is beyond ridiculous. I can't update\DL apps, I can't text, I can't use the internet properly, this is BS. This is a serious issue that HTC needs to fix. How is it possible that the software update screwed my phone up so bad??? I am SO frustrated right now with this phone that I just want to throw it against a wall. It's basically a paperweight at this point!

After posting my last post, now my phone is literally a paperweight. I get a "process.com.htc.android.mail has stopped unexpectedly" and .process.htc.launcher has stopped unexpectedly" Cant get to my home screen anymore which means I can't get to my phone book anymore to back anything up, which had important numbers in it. I can't use my phone anymore at all. Evo shows 24kbs free of memory after I uninstalled ALL my apps. This is beyond ridiculous, and I am so far past fuming, that I don't even know what to say. I work as a pilot, and I spend more than 2 weeks on the road per month, so my phone is literally a lifeline to home and work. I cannot go without a phone for email\texting and obviously phone calls. I'm not paying my bill until a brand new Evo is in my hands. I'm so mad right now it's not even funny anymore. This is absolute BS!

Edit: You probably need to do a battery pull. and then try the rest of my suggestion if you are able if not then we need to come up with game plan b. Question: Do you have all your Contacts backed up to your google account? Also if you are still unable to access your homescreen after a battery pull there is one more thing we can do but i would really rather not at this point.

I understand your frustration believe me I do. Sounds like to me we need to clean up some internal stuff. You will want to go through your text and start deleting old ones. Same for email. and your call log. Then maybe you can download a cache cleaner to help clean up temporary files. This will give you back a few meg.

all these will give you some space back. As others have mentioned you can do a factory reset however I personally feel if your going to go through all the trouble to do that you may as well root the phone and delete all the bloat ware that it has.

lastly just an FYI going through the App Manager and moving applications does not move the complete application to your sd card. It only moves some of the app. The rest of the app is still in the phones internal storage. Most of the Apps 2 SD Cards programs do the same exact thing. There are two apps2sd that do, however, you need to be rooted and have a ROM that supports them. Dark Tremmor is one and I forget the other one. Both however do require that you partition your sd card. having 2 gig is more than enough for apps most use only 1 gig.

Thank you very much for taking the time to help me out on this, however I feel like it's over, the phone is useless and doesn't respond anymore. I'll explain exactly what's going on. If you have a plan B or C I'm all ears, because my contacts are not on my SD or google.

I did a battery pull, let it sit with the battery out for a while, restarted it. On the restart, my wallpaper is gone, and replaced by factory HTC wallpaper. I have 2 low memory icons appear, low memory, and another saying I have less than 512kb (Mind you since I first posted this problem the other day, I have only uninstalled apps, not installed anything since). Now the fun part begins, I get error message after error message, to the point where I can't even use the phone. Error messages are as follows:

"Sorry the process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again"

Everytime I go to open my "people" app so I can try and move my contacts to the SD, the app force closes automatically. So I see my contacts for about half a second, then back to the app list screen.

Next, I have access to phone storage, in order this is what I'm seeing....

Downloaded: 412mb used/16mb free
All: 412mb used/16mb free
SD Card: 1.8gb used/5.6gb free (However the phone won't let me move anything to the SD card, saying it's out of room)
Running: 116mb used/257mb free

The two low space icons read as follows:
"Storage almost full, please make at least 512kb free space to receive messages. Tap to manage your app"
The second icon is the "Low on Space, phone storage space is getting low"

I've gone through all the apps on the All tab, and even though I uninstall every update, and stop all services, I can't get any memory out of the phone. Phone won't go into airplane mode either. If I try to turn it on, it shows that its coming on, but I continue to get service.

Again this all began immediately following the software update that my phone received mid week. I've never had any problems with this phone before, but the fact that such a simple software glitch can make the phone unusable is ridiculous. I'm a PC guy so I've had my share of frustration with windows etc, yet I always find a way in safe mode or in the Bios to at least have access to my data. On this phone it seems like if a problem occurs like this, you're screwed.

I'm trying to document as much as possible. If anyone here has questions about other behavior that I missed, let me know. I would hate for this to happen to someone else. HTC will be hearing from me, because this is absolutely unacceptable.

Edit: Another message now after another restart:

"Sorry! The application HTC sense "processcom.htc.launcher" has stopped unexpectedly

"process.facebook.katana"

That's the first time I've seen the facebook one.

2 options: (A) take to a Sprint and have them deal with it or (B) do a factory reset.

Those are your only 2 options right now with the frame of mind you're in.

Would a Sprint tech have any way of pulling the contacts off the phone? Not sure what you mean by frame of mind I'm in. I'm frustrated with it, but that doesn't mean I'm not willing to try something if there's another solution. I literally can't do anything to the phone because error messages just pop up consistantly. I can't modify ANYTHING on the phone. I've unistalled every app, then when I restart the phone, they're still there. I've tried to adjust my display because its very dim(I was in the car at night before all this started, so I dim the screen), and now I can't even get the brightness to stick. I can manage to bring it up after fighting the error messages for a few minutes, however once the phone screen goes off, it doesn't save the display setting. It's just frustrating being on the road with no phone, and I don't have a house phone, so this is all i have.

+1 On doing a Factory Reset....Have you tried that? If that doesn't help your best bet is to take it in to Sprint.

Sprint Should be able to pull them of the phone. Cant guarantee it but they should be able to. If you are able to go to settins> accounts&sync I think you should at least to sync the contacts over to google. At this point I only want to try and save your contacts not interested in anything else. If you cannot save them by syncing over to google then go to a sprint store and let them do what they can to save them. For future reference though always sync with google. Even if you change phones google will have a backup of all your contacts.

Unfortunately I think my friends are right you may have to do a factory reset. Again Let that be after all resources have been exalted from being able to save the contacts. If you are successful in saving contacts doing the factory reset is not a big deal then. If you are not successful in saving the contacts then again a factory reset will be the best answer at this point.

The update was a security update that really should not have had this affect on the phone. I am actually wondering if it was something else and when the update was going on if it triggered it somehow. Anyways non of that is really important so forgive my ramblings.

As far as HTC I personally would not bother. They make phones not the software that runs it. Your best bet is to get it to a sprint store if your unable to get contacts on google.

Sprint couldn't pull anything off the phone. Everything that wasn't on the SD card is gone, sigh...at least I have a clean slate I guess.

Sorry they were unable to save your contacts I know that is frustrating. However you have the right attitude you have a clean slate and you have a forum that is willing to help you anyway we can. Again Setup and Synce with google its the best way to have your contacts always ready.

Well I found the forum by googling my problem, and I'm glad I found you. You guys have been a lot of help and I really appreciate it. I'm going to be using sync to save my contacts. I still have my old phone with contacts on it, so I'll transfer those to my evo like when I first got it. The phone is still under the HTC warranty, however I was thinking of rooting it once that was up, I may start looking into that now.

Good luck and if you have any questions on rooting, go to the All Things Root section and i'm sure people will be able to help you:)

thats what we are here for to help. most of us found this place the same way you did we had an issue and googled to see if there was a solution.

In the All Root Section that Andy mentions He has a very good article on Rooting the Gingerbread. There is also another one By Ocnbrz that is very good. Read these a few times before doing the actual root. Also feel free to ask any question or concerns you may have.
