Help "Low on space" phone/application storage notification

thanks, i'm trying k9 and deleted my htc email account for now. it's tough getting used to it, but it's only email... i'll keep downloading apps and see where it takes me. i dont' have ANY moved to my storage, only 200mb free in app storage left. dont' know what's in my data partition.

well, i got the k9 running, cleared all data in my Mail app, however, i still have my low storage warning.

i'm moving stuff to SD now, i dont' have ANy apps on my sd. i know this won't "solve" the problem, but hey, let's fight some symptoms.

As I recall, I had to power cycle my phone after I removed the old email accounts. I hope that works for you.

thanks, actually, i have already hard reset my phone. i wanted to see if that solved another issue (it don't). Whenever I use voice commands, Google's, and say "Call McDonald's," or whatever, it adds a "+1" before the phone number, and verizon won't let me complete the call. the number's totally correct EXCEPT for the "+1." have that problem?

ANyways, let's hope this hard reset + k9 eliminates that message...

Actually I have seen that. I don't remember how I fixed it but I think it had to do with the country code. After a reset I think the default country code is set to 1 so it thinks you are in another country. Make sure the country code is set to 011. Check out Vlingo for voice commands. I friend showed it to me a long time ago and I've been using it since.

hmm... assisted dialing settings...

Enable assited dialing, OFF

reference country, USA,(310)

country code: 011 (was 1)
idd prefix 011
ndd prefix 1
area/city code 610
national number length 10

still add "+1".... any thoughts?

For my settings, the country code is just 1 and my area code is 000 (I also live in PA). I never saw a reason to change those an I haven't had this problem. Try changing them back and see if it helps. Did you have this problem before changing these?

hey, i never changed them purposely, the only thing i changed was the "1" to "011" to try out dltberry's suggetion, for country code.

i'll try your settings, thanks!

they're synced w/ google. i don't have any problems w/ saying "call mom" for instance, only a business that google has to look up.

Aah, I see what you're saying now. I hold the magnifying glass, say a local business, the search finds said business. I tap on it and the info comes up with the number. The search does not show a +1, but it gets added after selecting it. So, yes that does happen to me. However, at least for me, when I press Call with that showing (ex.+1-610-555-1212) the + sign gets cut off (16105551212) and it connects just fine.

Hello! I want to download the new Weight Watchers Mobile Beta on my phone. It's 16.37 MB. I get "Sorry, there's not enough space to install this item."

SD Card:
Total space: 1.84 GB
Available space: 1.40 GB

Internal phone storage:
Total space: 6.60 GB
Available space: 6.04 GB

Phone Memory:
Total space: 748 MB
Available space: 448 MB

I've cleared all my Google mail, all my Google voice, I've un-installed un-used apps, I've restarted the phone, I've pulled the battery.

I REALLY want this app. I REALLY don't want to do a factory re-set if I don't have to. There's also a WW ScanCalc app that I want to load - 338 KB. I get a Download was unsuccessful, please try again message. And actually - now I'm getting that with ANY app that I try to download.

Please help me!

Other background. My phone had been trying to update ALL of my apps since last night, my phone charger couldn't keep up. Went to Manage Apps, All, Download Manager and Force Stop and Clear Data to make it stop. It was only 30% done when I stopped it after it had run for over 12 hours.

Even though you have space left, there can only be so much (believed to be 150MB) in the /data/data/ folder of your phone's internal storage. You'll need to clear this data or remove an app (or some apps).

Also, are you rooted? Running a custom ROM? Some background info would help, because this would give you some more options.

rabernet, try going into your settings/applications and clear all data in dialer storage (pretty sure it's dialer storage), aka delete all of your text messages.

then, clear data in facebook for android app. you don't lose anything, just have to re-enter your pw.

i've done this many times to clear space.

actually, if you're don't need to store anything on your PHONE internal storage, the 6.06gb, i would format that, that should help.

by doing these things, i think you are somehow freeing up space in the /data/data partition.

Not rooted, so not running any custom ROMS. Don't feel tech savy enough to be "brave" enough to root. I've uninstalled about 20 apps already today, but can try to un-install some more later when I get home. I know I've removed more than the space those two apps were supposed to use.

Can I move them from Internal to SD as well if needed?

I'll give that a try as well. I appreciate both of your feedbacks, I'll report back later this evening or in the morning to report of either or both of these helped, or if I'm still having problems.

Moving the app to SD doesn't help in this case, as the app's generated data still goes to /data/data. If you exhaust all suggestions, I'd recommend rooting and installing "Nothing Special (Plain)" over at XDA. It's in the AF ROM forums as well. It frees up some space by default in /data/data, more than any other ROM or stock, which gives you more leeway. You'll still have the same problem, it just takes more apps/bloat to get there.

OK, I was able to clear up space by clearing the Dialer Data and FB Data. Now I can't get anything to successfully download. The original app at least begins, but it errors out.

Nothing will download now. :(

I've tried everything to eliminate the 'program memory full' (or whatever) error message.
First clearing out the Facebook data seemed to work, but now I can't find a big data file to clear ouit.
It seems like the message comes when it hits about 508MB free.
Question: Can you install too many apps?
They appear to take program memory even when not running. Even though they are 'installed' on the sd memory card.

Any help appreciated.

Bo

Whoops, I hadn't fully read this thread!
I uninstalled an app called Applications Folder, a handy program, but it eats up over 2Mb of data space. This got me up to 513MB free and it appears to be OK.

In conclusion, it looks like I can't keep adding apps to my new toy. I think I have about 150 so far.

It seems like the HTC folks should make the data partition a bit bigger or really install the programs in the phone memory partition - which has lots of space.

Sorry for the bother.
Bo

hmm..... well, i would definitely take it to verizon to look at, you might have to hard reset. i don't know why you can't install ANYTHING now...

You might try clearing data for the Market. When you re-open the Market app, it may prompt you for you Google login, if so enter it. Then go to menu > My apps and see what shows up. Try updating one at a time to start with and if at all possible, make sure you're on Wifi at the time. I struggle to get successful Market downloads when on 3G somewhat regularly and have since 2.2 came out. I'm on 2.3 now and still have some issues with Market + 3G.

I have been hit by the "Low on data space" issue for months now. I've tried everything and get results that never seem to last for more then a few days or sometime even hours.

Last night, out of sheer frustration, I deleted all the Contacts Storage (75.4mb)......and slowly and methodically recovered them, attempting to get back to the exact state i was in. I even did the dreaded synch with Facebook.

Now the Contacts Storage shows a mere 6.09mb. The question is.......can anyone explain why? As this seems to be a major cause of the issue, what drives the contacts storage to grow so much?

You know, I had that problem, I think. My contexts were super syncing with facebook, and my contexts grew from like 100 to 3000 or something like that. I had to hard rest. I couldn't even place a single phone call.

I don't think anyone knows why this happens...
