Root LTEVO ROOTING FOR DUMMIES {The Complete Guide}

The touch panel update breaks using the touchscreen in recovery - read: that broke using TWRP - hence, TWRP 2.4.1.0 to the rescue, if you've installed that update. (See Cap'n Throwbacks posts hereabouts for details, but that's basically it.) The flashable radio/firmware updates provided by the Cap don't have those nasty bits in them.

I must read to get my mind wrapped around this. I don't want to advise someone and get them in deep do-do.

Also, it's good to see you around AutoDrew!! ;)

Yeah, I'm still wrapping my head around it too. I didn't realize that it was only a recovery issue? Looks like they figured out the cause of a few bricks as I'm sure you guys have read. No skipping radio firmware versions with this phone.

Thanks Granite, I lurk in the background mostly now...

Hello everyone, I just have a quick question before I go about this.. will this method work for my phone?

it has Android 4.0.4 ICS
HTC Sense 4.1
Software 2.13.651.1 71ORD
Hardware 0003

Need any more info just ask. thanks !

Hey folks,
So like many others I'm a little confused about which steps I need to do for what I desire. I just upgraded from EVO 3D to LTE. I've never rooted/custom ROM android, but have experience with the Microsoft phones back in the 6.x days.

Here's what I desire:

I'm running the latest maintenance update that came out just a few days ago, I basically want to keep my phone data intact (no data wipe, no reinstall all apps, etc.) and end up with a rooted phone so I can get apps like Roam Control and some of the CPU booster apps to work.

Is this possible to do with the latest OTA update (I'm running 3.16.651.3 710RD and I'm pretty sure i'm on hboot 1.15)

Also, I'm running Windows 8 currently on my laptop I have access to.

Can someone shoot me the proper list and order of the items I need to run through in this fantastic guide that has been compiled? Or do I need to settle on a factory data reset to do achieve root at this time?

thanks in advance!

P.S. I'm really not interested in custom roms right now - i'm a sucker for the HTC Sense stock ROM - life has been so much better with andriod over the older MS Mobile OS's I was dealing with a few years back)....

thanks again

with what you have you will need to proceed to section 2 of the guide. you can either unlock the bootloader or you can run dirty racun to get fully s-off. the choice will be yours on which you would want to do. please read section 2 fully before deciding on which way you would want to go.

Hey ocnbrze, your response was for TransTronTra and not myself, I assume?

thanks again for getting this guide together and helping us newbs!

I just got this phone (i know all late) :p, but once i got it it was already updated to the latest update 3.16.651.3 710RD, and i want to root it to get CM 10.2 :D does anyone know when that will be possible?

ok looks like i need to update the guide so give me a sec to do it......but for both of you guys, the latest ota will work with dirty racun......so yes you can get s-off. you can also unlock your bootloader as well.

so if you have software version 3.16, your hboot did not change and thus dirty racun will work.

you will need to get the latest twrp recovery however. i will also add the update for that as well in the guide as well.

good luck guys and keep the questions coming if you have them.

Ocnbrze is correct, the Rooting for dummies DirtyRacun version will work for your phone, follow his lead. :)

I just wanted to let you know that when you perform the process of attaining S-off, or the other HTCdev S-on root solution, it will wipe your data. There isn't a way around this, that I'm aware of. My apologies. :(

So if i have the update 3.16 and hboot 2.09 i can still root it with dirty rucan and still install custom recovery?
because i really want CM 10.2 on my new evo lte :)

yep it should work. the hboot has not changed as the latest ota was only a maintenance release so you should be good to go;)

now go and get your root on:D

Hey guys so i just chatted with team unlimited on their IRC channel and they just told me that the latest ota will not work with dirty racun. at this point in time you will only be able to unlock the bootloader with HTCdev......sorry i assumed since the hboot does not change it would work. i think because you need to use the ruu that they provide on their site and they do not have one for the latest ota.

i added this to the op as well as updated the TWRP files in the guide as well:
Update 01/31/2013: This is the latest update though it is a small maintenance update, it has caused quite a stir. For one Dirty Racun does not support the latest ota (3.16.651.3). The only option for those with the 3.16 OTA will need to use HTCdev and unlock the bootloader. However, the latest ota will create some issues with the TWRP recovery on unlocked bootloaders. There are some amazing peeps working on the issue. I will update the guide as more info comes in.

Total newbie here--apologize in advance for dumb questions.

In reading through the guide, I see that the OP recommends TWRP and says to steer away from Clockwork recovery....but when I go to the TWRP website it doesn't list the LTEvo as a supported phone......so which recovery tool should I use?

Thanks!

DW

TWRP works, Clockwork Mod does not.

Goo Manager is one way to stay up to date on TWRP. You can also get the image file and fastboot flash it.

Unless there's been a glitch, the HTC EVO 4G LTE was recognized by the Team Win website, I downloaded from there within the last week. ;)

Here -

If anyone wants just 2.4.0.0 (without the touchscreen fix for the latest OTA), here's the link from Team Win -

Techerrata Downloads - Downloading openrecovery-twrp-2.4.0.0-jewel.img

Flash with -

fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.4.0.0-jewel.img

Ask for Mac/Linux command version if needed.

Or, if you need the touchscreen one -

Techerrata Downloads - Downloading openrecovery-twrp-2.4.1.0-jewel.img

fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.4.1.0-jewel.img

These are subject to expire, based on Team Win's call on that.

Just a quick update.
Thanks to this guide, and a little guidance from ocnbrze I was able to root/unlock my phone the same night I started asking questions about it with the latest OTA already on the phone to start with.

The biggest headache I had was I am on Windows 8 and I didn't have access to another computer. The USB driver situation was throwing me for a loop. I installed the proper HTC drivers and they would work until the phone was rebooted into Bootloader mode, then the drivers were not recognized.

All of my USB ports on my laptop are 3.0, eventually I found a work around. I was able to replace the USB Microsoft drivers with Intel drivers and the HTC phone drivers were then working properly when the phone was in bootloader mode.

I followed the directions here to swap out my USB drivers (note - I am not sure if this works for every motherboard, but my laptop apparently has Intel compatable USB hardware):

Windows 8 and Intel USB 3.0 Host Controllers

That sucks that it was such a pain, but I'm glad you got it figured out. And thanks for posting how you fixed it. Hopefully that will save someone all of the hassle you went through.

Now go get your flash on!

That was it. About six hours later (5.75 of those hours finding the solutions mentioned above in my post, on my own) my phone was rooted/unlocked SU access, etc.

I didn't flash a custom rom, I just stuck with the stock rom, re-installed my apps off of google play store, re-setup my phone with the preferences I like to have and I was back in business - but now I am able to use things like Roam Control again, and a few other root only apps and I am a happy camper.

Hopefully this info might save someone else down the road....
NICE!!!!!!!!
thanx for posting an update.

now please read the second post of the guide. it has tons of info including how to use your recovery as well as how to make a nandroid backup which i would do now that you have your rom setup how you like.

you can get most of the roms and kernels and such from here:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte-all-things-root/614073-list-utilities-roms-kernels.html
try the staff picks. its got some great suggestions of roms to tryout.
