Root Major Battery Drain

MusicJunkie

Android Expert
Regardless of the sense ROM my phone suffers major battery drain with NORMAL USE. I don't have any wake lock issues like I did on the xplod rom. When my phone is idle there is practically no decrease in battery but as soon as I start doing something I notice a drastic decline (ex. 1% for every few minutes then it stops for a little while then does it again) and I'll just be texting mostly and sometimes using Twitter for Android (not a resource hog like the rest out there). I don't see how people are getting +12 or more hours on sense based roms. This is pretty frustrating because I've been trying to find the best and longest lasting rom/kernel combination for battery consumption purposes since I first rooted my phone at the end of last year. ANY other suggestions aside from the normal? Thanks. I don't download apps that are huge on using resources. I don't play games because that's just not me. I listen to music but that's not for long periods of time.

Sounds like your having a terrible time. What usually uses the most of your battery?

Have you tried simply wiping battery stats(aka calibration)

Yes, I used to anyway. Then I read that "once it charges it 100% it automatically resets the battery stats" somewhere a few months ago so I just left it alone. Whenever I restore a ROM I wipe the stats though so it shows accurately what it's decreasing from instead of it was when I nandroid. I like the battery aspect of AOSP but thought of the whole "boot loop of death" has gotten me scared to flash another one. However, I did flash the AOSP xplod which in another thread I stated I had a terrible wake lock. *sigh*

What PRI are you on?

Did you update your radios and the PRI / NV etc to the latest version?

Some folks have issues with a few PRI versions and an update or downgrade usually fixes it.

I would try what Rxpert suggested and try a battery calibration first, then move on from there. Also what kernel are you running? Your phone might not like the current kernel, so trying out another version might help.

Updating the PRI/NV gave me worse battery so I went to the previous one I was on. I only use the stock kernels that come with the ROMs because custom ones on SENSE based ROMs really don't like my phone.

I assume you are running the 1.9xx PRI then?

Have you tried the 1.77.xx PRI and NV?

I've updated my pri to the newest version and I'm getting great results with it. Now the 1.9 PRI didn't like my phone at all, 1% per minute drain.

My PRI version says 2.15_003 and for the life of me I can not find the NV version O_O lol

I would give a few of the kernels a try again, you never know when a kernel might decide to work.

If you've never changed your NV then it will be the same as your PRI, "usually".

It looks like you are running the most current version of the PRI. You said you tried the 1.90 and it didn't play nice, correct?

If the kennels don't give you good resulys, maybe give the 1.77 a try and see if it gives you better results. I would recommend that you flash both the PRI and NV. An old guru had me do that back in my early days, so I recommend it. :)

Make sure you have a lot of battery and only flash one per recovery session. Flash one first, select reboot, let it do it's thing, do not pull the battery. Once booted shut down and boot to recovery, flash the other, repeat reboot. Do not pull the battery during this process, Bad juju. ;)

So how much screen time are you showing when you hit the 50% mark? I actually started tracking mine on a spreadsheet. Cool right?!?!

Anyway with anthrax and mikg I am getting about 45 minutes of screen time before hitting the 60% mark. I'm not sure why I picked 60, just did randomly and use that as my baseline.

Hey MJ, how old is your battery? They do lose potency over time. I recently replaced my 16 month old original battery and am getting great life out of my new battery.

Right now my battery has been up for 20 hours and it is down to 16%. I've used it pretty heavy today. If I wasn't on a call I was listening to music. This is what I bought off of ebay if you are interested... Amazon.com: Anker 2 x 1700mAh Li-ion Batteries for Sprint HTC EVO 4G, EVO Shift 4G, Droid Incredible; HTC Touch Pro2, Touch Pro 2, Snap; Fits A9292 + Free Anker Multi-purpose USB Travel Charger: Electronics

Wow, after looking at all those positive reviews I had to give it a shot. I was looking into buying a wallcharger for mine a few weeks ago and wasnt really happy with what was out there. This has 2 batteries and a charger. Combine that with the free 2 day prime shipping and I'm all over that. Ordered

I was going to post a link to ebay, but could not locate them. Maybe that store is now sold out? Anyway, the ones I posted from Amazon are identical and only $3 more. I'm glad I could help you out! Let me know how they work for you when you get them.

I jumped on this deal too, have to wait longer that Rx though, got the free long ass delay shipping, but i am ok with that.

i have the Gorilla Extended battery, and it is fine. want a wall charger myself though so this one with 2 batteries too is like for free!

Thanks for posting the find!

Do they fit with the regular back/case?

I have those batteries and they're the same size as stock. The charger's a little weird. It fits just about any cell phone battery so there are two movable pins that you have to center over the batteries positive and negative contacts. And I doubt it would do the battery any good if you missed and hit either of the two center contacts.

I got the batteries in the mail today and have one on the charger now. The charger took some time to figure out but its all up and running.

As long as you get the red light indicator you are ready to plug it in to start charging.

I'm on Tommy's Classic right now and my battery is a 15% after 32 hours! I hope your results are as good.

so we are in agreement, a battery upgrade is a must? I am still on stock battery, and with mikg3.0, antrhax, and ultimaterom tweaks...my battery does not seem to be lasting too long with low/moderate use.

I basically text, a few calls, light internet browsing. I toggle mobile data and use wifi whenever possible. the only thing i could change is set my screen brightness lower..I currently use auto detect.

I jsut flashed anthrax yesterday..so i understand to give it a little while to settle in..what other options may I have though..other than trying a new kernel..and what kind of performance should I be expecting?

pri is 2.33_003

currenly on 8 hrs with this battery.at 15% left...not to good!

edit: setcpu is at 245/998 inter X (figured screen off with this one was lower than smartass..am I wrong?)

am i missing something..would there be something running in the background I should look at stopping??

Have you tried running it with just the stock rom? It might work better for you.

but this deal seemed to be too good for me to pass up too!

It could be a problem with the Dialer. Here is my problem that I have never been able to fix: Make any number of phone calls during the day, then recharge the phone to 100%. Remove from charger and the Dialer is the biggest hog of battery.

However, my fix is that every evening before I go to bed I reboot the phone before recharging. This seems to fix it, temporarily, as long as I don't forget to reboot every night.

^ that is odd! I have 2 batteries, the one I got with my og evo over a year and half ago, and another that I got with a replacement about a year ago... Both work just fine. I'd actually say I get better battery life now than I did when I got the phone :-) However, with that being said... I also notice that when I use the phone for music, calls, web whatever, the battery does drain quick. I think these batteries are just small, and it is normal drain, I mean.. I've done EVERYTHING to get better life, but honestly, if ya want to use the phone for what it was designed to do, its just gonna use that juice.

Ok, they finally came. got batteries coming out my ears now. the original, the extended one, now these 2... What the heck I gonna do with all these now?

Couldn't resist the deal. Phone is all skinny now with these batteries. i wonder if charger will work on my extended battery?

The batteries seem to be working fine for me. I dont know if they work better than stock or not because my internet keeps going out so I can't maintain a WIFI connection like I usually would.

I woudnt use that charger for anything other than those batteries personally, but thats just me.
