Root Major Root Issue - Need HELP Bad!

bdesul

Newbie
I am all twisted up at this point and dont know what to do first to resolve my issue. Here is the current situation:

1. Rooted phone successfully with HTC-Dev on Mac process

2. Installed Paranoid (pa_jewel-2.16-29SEP2012-012331) and GAPPS (gapps-jb-20120726-signed)

3. Was not able to access RECOVERY when I would boot BOOTLOADER. Then read that I needed to flash a new kernel since I was changing from Stock ROM and Kernel to AOSP ROM. So I flashed one of the recommended kernels.

4. I was still not able to access RECOVERY. So I tried emptying Cache and doing a Factory Reset multiple times. Eventually, I could no longer boot up to Android, but can still access BOOTLOADER. When I run the BOOTLOADER menu option, it searches for files but cant find an image. (It goes by too fast to get exact output).

5. I read that I need to run a RUU, but can only find RUU with .exe and I am on a Mac. I eventually relocked via "fastboot oem lock". Now I can no longer unlock by issuing reverse command. I tried flashing Open Recovery (openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-jewel.img) but I get "signature fail errors". I also cant use ADB command to push a file to my sdcard, it says that it cant find the device.

6. I am completely confused about what process I need to follow to either go back to the Stock ROM/Kernel or redo the Rooting process. Help with either is much appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to AF!!
I moved you to the Evo 4g LTE forums to help you out better! :)

Edit: and I know of at least 2 guys here (among others) that will provide you with GREAT help, Rxpert and Ocnbrze...they will see this at some point and come on down! :)

No worries! We'll getcha fixed up pronto! :)

Try to reflash Recovery. sounds like the nand section of the phone may have been corrupted. Don't mess with anything else just reflash RECOVERY.

Mike how about move this over to the root section and not leave it in general as this is a root issue.

I moved it while on the computer at work. I thought I got it in the right section. I am on my phone now but will double check it when I get home. I am sorry sir. But thank you for your reply:)

Part of the problem is you relocked the device. That severely limits the things we can do because now for all intensive purposes you are unrooted.

You'll have to either run the RUU from a windows or linux machine or redo htc dev to unlock your bootloader so we can flash a recovery and stock ROM.

you can get linux to run in live mode on a mac machine so you may have to do that to run the ruu I would just try to flash the recovery first and see if that works then we can talk about the alternatives such as this one from RX whom is one of a few people I actually would trust with my phone. :smokingsomb:

Yes, RUU is the only option with a locked bootloader. You wiped the phone clean, so there isn't an os to boot the phone up to.
I'm not 100% the htcdev will work with the current situation either. Worth a shot tho.

Please post up what your bootloader says. Hboot version baseband, everything. This way we know what RUU to link you. After you get the RUU flashed, and can boot up again, we'll work on getting you rooted. :)

I am back in and able to access RECOVERY menu. Should I just go ahead and install Paranoid, etc? Or do you suggest going back to the stock ROM?

For either, what are my next steps? I dont want to screw this up again. Thanks.

Install either, but you're going to want to fast boot flash the boot.IMG from whatever ROM you go with or you are gonna have the same issues.

I have a step by step thread for it on here. I'm on my phone so I can't link

I was able to push Paranoid (pa_jewel-2.16-29SEP2012-012331) and GAPPS (gapps-jb-20120726-signed) to /sdcard/ on my device.

Here is the sequence setup that I was following on XDA-Developers website:

  • CWM: Wipe Data/Factory Reset
  • CWM: Install Zip: Paranoid ROM
  • CWM: Install Zip: Gapps
  • CWM: Wipe Cache Partition
  • CWM: Advanced/Wipe Dalvik Cache
  • Reboot and edit your Apps Dpi & Layout under Settings/Paranoid Settings - DO NOT RESTORE YOUR OLD PROPERTIES FOR NOW
  • If you want to explore the various phone modes, tap "Configuration," chose an option, wait for it to finish, then do a manual reboot
Do I still need to do the first step and "wipe data and factory reset"? Or can I just proceed to installing Paranoid and GAPPS?

I'd suggest doing it anyway. Wiping it more than once can't hurt.

Make sure you push the boot.img

Fastboot flash boot boot.img

Rxpert83,
I have flashed boot.img, then installed Paranoid ROM and GAPPS successfully, but
the one thing I noticed was that I kept getting "Cant mount /data" errors. So I am not confident that it worked correctly. Any ideas?
Thanks

I ended up installing TWRP. Was able to get Paranoid and GApps installed. Able to boot up. Having an issue with com.android.phone crashing. Plus it seems that the phone is running real hot. I never really felt the battery getting that hot. Gonna look for another kernel/ROM config. Any recommendations?

Thanks everyone for all your help. You guys run a very knowledgeable forum.

Any aosp ROM except for cm10 will crash phone on startup.

If you want to run aosp, you really should be on cm10. Everything gets fixed there first and then ported to the other ROMs. Flash cm10 and its boot.IMG :)

I think that I got in a little over my head. I got TWRP recovery, Paranoid Android, GApps installed. Problem is that Phone app crashes on boot and then a few more times before it seems to stabilize. I cant turn on Wifi through settings and havent tried any other method. My phone seems to get very hot and I even took my case/protector off. I am concerned about frying my phone. I would appreciate some help with the following questions below:

1. Could you give me specific kernel and ROM recommendations for my phone?
Could you tell me if you see anything obviously wrong with my config? I have provided my phone config below the questions.

2. I also get confused why some ROMs have kernels and some don't. If a ROM has a kernel, does it auto install when I install the ROM or do I have to find the boot.img within the ROM files and flash that before I install?

3. How come when I boot into BOOTLOADER, I still see errors re: can find img files? They flash so fast that I cant see them. Is there a log that I can access to view the errors?

4. If you can recommend a config, are there any special instructions when installing or is there anything config changes I have to make after install. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you want an AOSP ROM you should be flashing CM10. Nothing else has the fixes incorporated yet. Phone wont crash on boot and all in all its a very stable ROM.

SEE RX's RECOMMENDATION.

MOST ROMS HAVE KERNELS BUILT IN THEM IF YOU WISH A KERNEL NOT PART OF THE ROM THEN YOU WOULD NEED TO FLASH THE KERNEL YOU WISH

3. How come when I boot into BOOTLOADER, I still see errors re: can find img files? They flash so fast that I cant see them. Is there a log that I can access to view the errors?

THIS IS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT UNLESS YOU HAVE AN IMAGE THAT YOU WANT TO FLASH THROUGH BOOTLOADER. THIS IS NORMAL TO GET THE ERRORS.

4. If you can recommend a config, are there any special instructions when installing or is there anything config changes I have to make after install. Any help is greatly appreciated.

IF YOU INSIST ON STAYING WITH AOSP THEN AGAIN FOLLOW RX'S ADVICE AND LINKS TO DOWNLOAD.

If I need to move this to a different forum, please let me know.

See the stuff in red. As far as phone getting hot not sure what is going on there it could be a hardware issue in which you would have to take it to sprint about.

Read about the different ROMS and KERNELS before deciding to try them out. Hopefully your getting hot issue is from the KERNEL and will stop as soon as you switch. If it does you may want to contact the dev of your KERNEL to let them know what it is doing and hopefully they can find a fix for the issue. When I was on Paranoid I ran Stock Kernel and it ran fine. Unless needed I wouldn't run anything but stock KERNEL.

l agree with rx. cm10 is where it is at. it was my daily for awhile.

i would recommend any of the staff picks found here: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte-all-things-root/614073-list-utilities-roms-kernels.html.

I got CM10 installed this week and everything is stable. I appreciate all the help. I would have been screwed without it. Thanks RXpert83, Argedion, Granite1, Ocnbrze and anyone else I missed.
