[MAJOR SOLUTION] Fix your slow 3g speeds:EVO4g

verified..3 towers down near my work...if you are getting slow speeds, and this doesn't fix it. call sprint. do so with a full battery lol...I was on the phone for 2 hours.

They claim is should be fixed in 72 hours.

Thanks...I followed the procedure on my new phone and my wife's new phone and we now have usable 3G speeds. We were both stuck at under 100kbps and now are over 1000kbps.

One thing of note. We live in the sticks and don't have Sprint reception at home so Sprint gave us an Airvana access point (which works great!...we now have 5 bars at home). I could not get the data profile or PRL to update with the Airvana plugged in. Once I disconnected it and went outside (hunting for a signal) I was able to update them both and then turned the Airvana back on and everything is good. I'm wondering if anyone else had to do this too?

I have seen that before.

Still did not help my phone. Its been since early November since i have gotten any good 3g speeds on sprint's network...

sitlet have you called sprint? they can actually do something in some cases they kept referring to "switching you to another tower"

plus you may have a tower out and they don't even know it. this tower by my work has most likely been out for months

sitlet have you called sprint?
haha yes I have...numerous times. Since it started in November, I probably have spent 30 hours on the phone with them. They have given me 5 phones, 2 refurbs, and 3 new ones, because they kept thinking it was the hardware. And so did I, since my friend's evo works fine, and the evos in the repair center always worked fine too. But it's obviously not, 5 phones would not have the same exact problem. And I can get 3g just fine on my Airave, and just fine when I do the Verizon prl hack. But on sprint, no matter where I go, I normally cannot get above 50kbps.

Although I am very frustrated with this, Sprint has done everything they can. they have given me the new phones, we have troubleshooted everything, from prl's to data restores to hard resets, nothing works.

plus you may have a tower out and they don't even know it. this tower by my work has most likely been out for months
This is kind of what I thought too. At my house, and at both of the places I work, there is a tower less than a block away, so I always get a full signal. I keep telling them this, that there may be a problem with these towers. And they keep putting in trouble tickets, and tell me that an engineer will come out and check, and call me back. Well, they never call me back, and so when I call back they always tell me the Ticket was closed, and nobody came out. I have put in at least 10 of these tickets, and every one has been closed. Just last week however, I talked to a rep who actually knew what he was talking about. He told me that unless 50 or more people in the same area are having problems, AND call in and complain about it, nobody will actually come out and check the towers. Bummer.

This actually did the exact opposite for me. I was getting 1.5-2 meg prior but I thought I'd test it out anyway. After following the steps I was down to .5 I put in the old info and did the hands free again and now I'm back to where I was before I tried the fix.

That's great speeds! I do mention it most likely will not increase great speeds that you already have ; p

i just saw this thread.

before i did anything i checked the speed from the speed page listed in the FAQ.

i kept gps on because in my daily use i prefer gps to be on so ill leave it toggled on for testing.

i did the test (used the auto select method for the packet size to download) and tested 4 times. my speed was 2.5-2.6. this is before todays prl ("76" i s the latest prl as of this writing). i then did the prl update and without doing anything else i ran the speed test. first test was .886! lol so i did it 2 more times and the results were 2.7! i then did a soft reset and ran the speed tests.. 2.5-2.7.

im now going to go all the way with adjusting the http settings in the phones service menu and doing the reinstall profile gag.

also worth noting it my slot cycle is set to zero.

ok i have edited the http settings and did the restore and cancelled the prl update.

i have ran this test 4 times. the results have increased each time. i am in the same space as i was when i did the first testing.

i have 4G on but there are no signal bars present over the 4G icon but the other signal bars are pretty maxed. im downtown atlanta inside a tv studio so there are a lot of RF going on here.

my lowest results were 1.2 and the 4th result is 3.4 down.

holy carp 3.4! wow..no bars but sounds like it is picking up a 4g connection just barely!

have you tried 3g?

yeah i was amazed at the speed. that was 4G im pretty sure. the 4G icon was lit but no bars over the 4G but i had the other bars showing full.

i didnt try 3G :( i forgot to turn off 4G :(

so, in other words, your signal bars have nothing to do with your 3G connection? i've been testing at my home, (maybe 1 bar at most) and am getting poor DL speeds. i followed the directions above and haven't noticed a difference except that vid's from youtube will not play. is this odd, or is it just me?

this mod does nothing that would cause youtube vids not to play.

the bars are cell signal and have nothing to do with 3g. You can theoretically have full bars, and no 3g as those bars are simply indicating cell signal (calls) and you are mist likely connecting to the older 1x data service

call sprint and they can verify if that tower is out.

also try from other areas.

there are more tips and tricks if you are rooted, but not much one can do but complain to sprint if you are not

Hello,

I don't know if I can post this here but I will anyways :P.

Today I noticed really really slow speeds. I barely use my internet on my phone, but it was so slow I couldn't even bring up a page. This was at a place 20 minutes away from my home.

So at home I looked again and still having the same problem. I tried these fixes but it still stays the same.

Here is what the connection thing on the signal strength widget shows

-85 dBm
Right now it says 3G on signal strength widget but has no arrows or anything -- earlier it said EV with an up and down arrow.

ANyways, my speeds are like... 36 KILObytes. Like, really really horrible.

Is that.. normal lol

Welcome to the forums!

You're doing fine, you posted in the right place. Post whatever you need and wherever you think it belongs - if you miss the target, we'll cheerfully move your post to the right place. ;)

Please confirm - do you have the HTC Evo 4G?

Do you have speedtest app or similar telling you that you're getting 36 kbps? (big difference between 36 kbps and 36 kBps - one is bits, the other is bytes)

36 kbps (also known as 36 kb/s) is VERY low.

Well, I'm trying this process and I'm getting pretty scared, lol. The 3G icon isn't coming up. I'll just be a little bit more patient.

EDIT: I waited for ten minutes, and it still didn't turn up again, so I restarting.

EDIT 2: It still didn't turn on, so I'm changing everything back to normal, and rebooting.

EDIT 3: It still won't turn on. :( Any fixes?

Ok, so I'm running wireless tether. Now, it had been working fine last night. I was running a laptop, and two ds's no problem. Now tonight I can't even seem to get any web pages on my laptop to load other than the google search page. Internet is fine on the phone, just the laptop. I read this thread, prl on the phone says I'm on 60675. After reading here idk about wether to update or not I downloaded msl reader, and ran three speed tests for each.
DL results:
1.2 mbs
587 kbs
1.7 mbs
Up:
264 kbs
445 kbs
432 kbs
Now I notice the thread says prl should be 60676, then, in nice attention getting red, :) it says that if your on 60675 this won't do anything. Maybe I missed it, but are you saying I should leave the prl at 75, or update to 76 and then run thought the process quoted above? I'm rooted just recently, running amon ra 2.3, haven't flashed a rom or kernel as of yet and I do have ad-free running. Not sure if that means anything, but I noticed it mentioned a couple times above. Always trying to learn, curious what everybody else thinks and if it's something I should think about doing. Always trying to get the best of what a device can do, it's driving the wife nuts :) thanks in advance

I can confirm this worked on my Evo. My 3G DL went from 134kbps to as much as 1.5mbps!!! My UL went from 67kbps to up to 800kbps!!! My PRL is 60676. GPS on or off had no effect. Also, cleared my HTTP proxy settings prior to all testing, so I'm not sure if that had any effect. However, it did fix my Sirius app streaming, which would not work before clearing out the proxy. Thanks so much forr the fix... You pwn!!!

Hello and thank you for the response~!

Yes, I have an Evo 4g.

Yes, my speeds are that slow. I don't know why.

Right now my speeds are (in Speedtest)

132 kbps download
91 kbps upload

or

.13 Mbps
.09 Mbps

It's incredibly slow. My phone hasn't been dropped or anything. The coverage map says I have 3g all around me. The signal strength widget says

-92 dBm; Ev.

When I first restart it will show TMobile 3g, and then Switch to Sprint Ev. I don't know what to do. The phone is barely over a month old.

your speeds are indicative of a bad 3g radio, or a tower outage,

are the speeds like this at all locations (ie tower connection should change every 5 miles or so)

if you completely lose 3g run through the process again.

and...

I will reed back through the instructions and make sure there isn't confusion. when they were written, the current prl at that time was 60675
I did edit the instructions the morning 60676 was released.

If you follow the directions ...the end result is the most current prl and an updated data profile. The error in the system that kills 3g speeds occurs after the handsfree activation when the automatic prl restore happens. That step is not needed and should be canceled.

basically
update pprl
remove proxies
restore data profile
handsfree activates
cancel prl update

done (in some cases prl update is needed here, of speeds are still low or dropped try it)

Hello,

I drove to my school which is like a 10 minute drive away, and the speeds were still slow, but they were better than at my house. This was also the case over at a store 15 minutes away from my house.

I don't recall it ever being this slow before, because earlier I couldn't even use the Market app. The last time I used the Market app though was before I added a 3rd line to my phone. I do have unlimited everything etc, but is it possible that has done something to my speed? I guess that's silly.

I re-did the steps just as you said, and immediately the Widget says I have Ev, not 3G.

Could it be my case? It's an otterbox thing, and it's quite thick -- might that be an issue?

Also, if it is the Antennae, is that something that will require them to give me a new phone (AKA a refurbished phone)? :(

Thanks!

In other news, I have flawless Pandora streaming with this speed... :/

One of the other lines, which is being used by my brother who is 45 minutes away from me, is reporting similar speeds and his is also saying Ev rather than 3g.
