I think what happened was...

I had installed the latest .apk after deleting, but there was something wrong with cache settings... nothing I tried worked, even earlier versions of Play/Market.

So, I must have had some version of it on the phone, and with a reset, cleared everything out to where I was able to start from scratch like a new phone.

Anyway, I was confused but pleasantly surprised as well. I was ready to spend the rest of my phone's life doing manual pushes and installs lol

Thanks to y'alls help, I'm a happy 1st time smart phone user with ES File Explorer, Superuser, Link2SD, OS Monitor and CWM. I'm at 65% internal free, 90% SD free, 60% 2nd partition SD free, 8% system free (which is perfectly fine), 98% cache free. Probably could get it better with tweaking, but no need right now.

My 2nd partition I did at 256MB (out of 2GB), which I might need to increase later, especially when I get a higher cap card later, but I'm very pleased so far. I've been in and out of programming for 30 years, and this forum topic has been a real treat.

I used Minitool to do the partition, which was really easy with a great interface and has the added benefit of being a desktop tool as well. The only thing you have to worry about with it is making sure you commit your changes before unplugging O.0

Once again, all of you that participated in helping with this thread are massively appreciated. It's a blast to hang out in communities filled with super helpful and super nice peeps. Even though the Merit/Avail is low in memory, I'm sure I'll be fine for a while. :D

I guess my next step after taking a break is some kind of ROM browsing, just to see what's out there...
 
How does one add that neat CRT style wake/lock animation to a non-cyanogenmod ROM? I want that back but no such CM ROM exists on these phones and I cannot find an app that gets it in there. ROM Toolbox Pro failed to install it too. Would help if I had the app name that CM uses to perform that animation
 
I have put the SU file everywhere i could think of....in just C: where the SDK is installed, in the SDK folder, in SDK/tools. And it just wont push it to my phone. I've done every other step right & i'm stuck on this last part. I just cant get the SU pushed onto my phone. Please help because i've been at it for hours & I'm SOOOO close! Thanks! i just keep gettin the message 'cannot stat 'su': no such file or directory' after i remount and put in the 'adb push su /system/xbin/su' command.
 
If the sdk is in c/*user*/android/ the su file should be at c/*user*/android/SDK/tools & I'm assuming your running windows so in cmd your dir should be c:\*user*\android\SDK\tools>
 
through the adb steps I got the clockworkmod recovery installed but couldn't get the SU binary to go through. got a lot of 'not found' errors in adb shell. since I had the recovery in there I just got Stayboogy's nandroid of a stock pre-rooted ROM on my SD card, booted into recovery (power off, then hold home, volume up, and power at the same time until you get there) and went to backup/restore and restored that ROM. then went and set up my Play Store account and downloaded SuperUser and I was done.

I think the same step would work with the factory recovery if you can at least get a root prompt ( # instead of $ ) in adb shell, type 'reboot recovery' and hit enter. should reboot the phone into stock recovery (alternatively, the same home, vol up, and power trick would do the same thing) and restore the same ROM that way. just make sure you have it on the root folder of your SD card (not in a directory)
 
ok im almost done with the root process. ive been reading thorugh different forums and followed a decent guide from xda.com. my only prob is i get to the adb push su /system/xbin/su and am told it was failed because the file does not exist. i think it may be because i didnt download the file to my phone. however whenever i try, the download instantly fails. this is my first android and the only reason im trying to root it is because i need to get rid of the bloatware. can anybody help me???? ive done this three times today and had to factory reset and im at a loss how to finish this process
 
Yes. Stop factory resetting. You need to run cmd from the same folder su is in. So if su it's at say c/user/Bob/Android/tools/su then cmd should be user/Bob/Android/tools>

As you know from this thread , I am rooted.

I have been having issues with my calls, I start to echo and have to hang up and call back.Is anyone else having this issue with the Merit? Could it be an issue with my rooting or the phone in general?

JJ, I have the same phone, and I'm rooted as well. (As I've said, thanks to all the uber cool peeps on this site.) And I'm very please with the whole situation.

I get an occasional echo, but that's just the network. It should have nothing to do with your phone. You might regularly be in an area that does not have cells close enough together, or too much traffic as King suggested. You might want to see if there is a coverage map available online from AT&T.

Sorry JustJoanie....I couldn't get back online the next day....got real busy and then forgot all about rooting the Merit. I'm glad you finally got yours rooted.

I've since moved on to the Straight Talk 'Samsung Galaxy Proclaim' because it has 1 gig of internal storage. No more fighting with constantly dwindling internal memory.
 
Can someone help me?? My husband followed all instructions and was able to Root both our phones BUT we are not sure what we can take off the phones and still have them work properly. Do we do a complete backup of everything on the phones? We don't have the option to Freeze. Just backup or uninstall. If there is a link someone can send us too to research what files are on our phones and which ones we have to have. This is all completely new to us. Because of the economy and our financial situation, we went from using Droid Razr's to the ZTE Merits last week and although we like the merits, our droids did soooo much more.
 
This forum has all your answers. Just need to take the time and sift through it all and read. This is the best way to learn if you are going to venture into the domain of rooting.
 
I accidentally deleted WHOLE path completely ON COMPUTER TO VARIABLES THEN MY KID TURNED POWER OFF TO COMPUTER WHAT DO I DO NOW THAT THERE IS NO PATH AT AT ALL. what do i do to fix it omg.

Did you delete a folder on your computer? If so go to recycle bin and restore it.

or did you delete a folder on the phone, something like "/system/bin"? let us know which one.

I am having the same problem everything went good until the su file I have it located in c:/androis-sdk-windows/tools/su it says i have read only access and cont copy it. any suggestions
 
Would a factory restore also be efficient for what is needed in the original post? I figured out how to do a factory restore by going to the Privacy option in settings. It worked for me, as I was having the same problem.
