Root [Merit] ZTE z990g Merit , Internal Space, SD card, Rooting

I Just replaced it then used link2sd to delete the old launcher. No problems deleting the boot animations ether. Sorry but the spell correction on my phone changes things a lot.

I renamed a mp3 file.

I think I left it a MP3 tho. I think I miss spoke about changing it to ogg. I work in a court so I don't use any sound for boot now.

I keep my most recent tested backup on the SD & a extra recovery (since I'm testing the one I use) just in case.

Odd. Only thing different I did was freeze it instead of deleting. Also, come to think of it I did not move Holo Launcher to my phone. It was auto-moved to SD. I'll try moving it to the phone, and just deleting the Default launcher. And... worked like a charm. Figured Launcher.apk was a dependency of something, guess it's not. *shrugs*

I have Holo linked and it's OK. To remove the boot animation, find the zip and delete it. I use the Droid X annimation zip I put in it's place. The sound is bootsound.mp3. You can replace it with any that you name bootsound.mp3. It can also be deleted all together.
Edit- Joanie, if you have issues with the explorer you can delete and try a different one. They all work basically the same, its the user interface that sets each one apart. Like test driving cars, you don't know which one ya like, til ya check it out.

Launchers- download one and when the phone asks which to use, select the new one. If you don't like it, delete it and the phone reverts to the stock, as long as you don't delete the stock first.

Link2SD - Storage Info

Internal- 62% Free
SD card-98% Free
SD Card 2nd Part -93% Free
System- 8% Free
Cache -96% Free

My Question is....... Why is system only 8% free and should I try and get that number higher? And if so, how would I do that?

I don't know much about Android but I would think if the system needs more it will drop something it doesn't need. I wouldn't worry about it myself but maybe someone with more knowledge will correct me.

The system is a rom and doesn't require free space don't link anything of that. It's the way, it is supposed to be. Technically the phone wasn't designed for the user to be able to install software on the system partition, you can do it since you're rooted but more than likely link2sd will make the difference you want.

I have used Link2SD to delete some of the programs that came on my phone, do I also need to go into explorer and delete files to those programs or has Link2SD already done that for me? ( I now have both, Solid Explorer and ES Explorer on my system, both are on SD card)

Also, anyone have a list of programs/files/bloatware that can be removed safely?

Link2sd would've removed the apk files. You should also clear application cache and your davlik cache. Both can be done within the link2sd -> more..

Sometimes when uninstalling system apps I notice there .opex counter part gets left behind. These are located in system -> app using any file explorer. How ever, be very careful with what you delete in this folder. All system apps and their corresponding .opex files reside in this folder. Be sure to only delete the .opex counterpart of apps you have removed with link2sd. If you dont see them, great. That just means one less thing for you to toy with because they have already been removed.

Yup. I bumped the thread a few days ago.

If the launcher is linked & Superuser broke or your SD went bad would your whole phone go down?

If the SD goes bad, any linked apps won't work. Superuser should always be left on the phone. It guarentees a Backdoor in if something like that happens.

System is at 8 because you haven't deleted much in the way of system apps. The games and books and PDF to go can be deleted to get more free space. ES on the phone and linked. I made No Frills a system app so its usable even if I change SD's.

Just wanted to say thanks a whole bunch for having this thread. I went through the root procedure, which took about 4 hours. I mistakenly deleted Play (OK, it was 2 in the morning lol), and couldn't find any way to restore it. Did a factory reset, everything fine, then redid superuser in 5 minutes.

I've learned a lot from this. Thanks again very much for being so helpful, especially (in my case this time) to Squidly and kingmt. :)
