Root [MetroPCS/CDMA] [HOWTO][ROOT]Automatic Root for SGSIII

Ok. So, i tried again with all the correct conditions, cable, debug. etc. When i run through the steps, i get up to: "Your device will reboot three or four times....
If it is not complete by 15 minutes, something has probably gone wrong."
After i press a key, i can see the commands blaze down the the screen and in the blink of an eye, im at step 2.
Then: "If you see the following error, you may ignore it....blah blah blah.. This just means there wasnt an existing root found on your phone."
After this step, the blazing fast commands fly by the screen and in the blink of an eye, im at a screen that reads, "Testing superuser... adb is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
uid and gid should both be 0. Are they? [y/n]"

After these two steps, the last step says installing superuser apk and then rebooting but my phone doesnt react at all.

Think theres any obvious answer to my problems? or am i just unlucky like that? Should i factory reset my phone? any help is appreciated guys, thanks alot for reading and even more if you respond ;)

Update: Just rooted :) idk what was wrong but pretty much i just needed to extract my files correctly. Worked flawlessly. Almost had a heartattack becuase my laptop was low on battery during the root. Loving the community so far, during this time of trying to unlock all the potential of our phones.

Glad you got it i did it last night very easy it was just a driver issue with my computer other than that all good

yeah man, we were in the same boat for a few mokents. So relieved to get rid of metro bloat. glad to be on android forums too, gonna be great to actually participate in all the goodness :D

Maybe I should stress this. Don't run the script from within the archive. You must uncompress it first. Otherwise, it might act funky..

Yes also I removed some junk I had on my computer and that did it thanks again tiede

There is a video of a man doing this exact method almost. He doesn't show you were to get the drivers like our good friend here but if you would like the video:

How to Root Metro Pcs Samsung Galaxy S3 - YouTube

He talks a lot at the beginning.

Edit: For some reason the drivers install and it recognizes the make of my phone and such but there is nothing in the phone according to my computer. I restarted and everything even uninstalled then reinstalled but nothing. Any tips?

That has to do with how Google and Samsung work out the connection between the phone and the pc in ics. Instead of usb mass storage, they use a mode called mtp for music/videos, and another (ptp) for photos and (most) other files. To achieve normal operation of the sd card as you're used to in the previous versions of Android, download the app called easy UMS from the Play Store, created by Chainfire of XDA.

i don't see why it shouldn't. Although you probably want to stick with the AT&T subforums for support with your AT&T SGS3

So what is the process if I am running on strictly a linux box? I can't even spell Windoze and haven't for about 10 years. So any pointer of getting this work under Linux would be greatly appreciated by me!

There's a Linux version too. The .sh file. Read the op.

Yes, understood that the first time, hence the question about the ability to run under linux. Wrapped into that question, although not overly clear on my part is that I noticed that the required drivers were a .exe file. If there some sort of bin file or something that will pull down the drivers as well?

I've rooted all of my adroid phones with no problems. follow this one step by step. and ofcourse, I get hung up.

Now, I might just be rooted but I don't see superuser. (I'm basing my success on the installation of SU)

I went throught the whole shabang and I don't see superuser. phone rebooted several times and all. Gave it a second and third attempt. (restarted computer/phone, re-installed drivers) and the command prompt screen hangs in

Step 1 - Setup
Copying files:
Copying su:

What could I have done wrong? kinda frustrating when I've done this with at least a dozen other phones

Go to the PlayStore and download and install superSU. If you already have the su binary installed, which you say you think you do, then all you need is the root app.

well that seemed to make it work. I installed setcpu and superuser allowed acces and everything seems fine??? for some reason I'm not convinced that I rooted my phone. although I ask myself what more convincing do I need?

I would like to know which rooting method is better and what the difference between the metro-sgs3-rooter-linuxMACwindows and the other on utube DebugFSroot_generic the video's is called How to Root Metro Pcs Samsung Galaxy S3 .

There really aren't "better" methods. If it gets the job done then it gets the job done. There are easier methods though. The one in this OP seems to be as easy as it gets. I used the odin flashable CWM recovery found in here http://androidforums.com/metropcs-galaxy-s3-all-things-root/636808-oudhs-clockworkmod-6-0-1-5-a.html and it was super easy for me. Your choice.

Thank you, but I have a question: is the Odin method going install ClocKworkmod Recovery. Because I don't want to change anything on my s3 except for ROOTING, AD FREE, TETHERING. I would like to stay with the stock system. Also I don't want anything to do with ClocKworkmod I had on my lg esteem and it cause problems with when I reset my cel.
