Root [MetroPCS/CDMA] [ROM][OFFICIAL] CyanogenMod 11 Nightly Builds for d2mtr

Hi Moderator, please delete this thread if it is inappropriate. This is my first post on androidforums.com

This thread is for MPCS GS3 owners like me, who would like to try installing CyanogenMod 10.0 Stable, but who have ZERO experience installing custom ROMs on ANY smartphone. As such, the existing CyanogenMod Nightlies thread is a little over our head.

OK, here are my first questions.

Is there any reason not to install CWM and CM10.0 using the Download and Recovery modes on a GS3, following the instructions at cyanogenmod.org? (Sorry, I'm not allowed to include a link in my first post.) Is there anything I should do before? What about afterwards, in order to make sure the following apps work?

Phone
Gmail
Gcontacts
Gcalendar
Gdrive
Gmaps
Dropbox

Thanks!

Andrei, the newbie

well i see this is your first post so let me welcome you here! anyways don't worry about your post being deleted ill just merge your thread in the right spot;) don't hesitate to ask anymore questions.

No, my stock MPCS GS3 is not rooted. The instructions at cyanogenmod.org say rooting the stock GS3 is neither necessary nor recommended. They indicate to use the native SG3 Download and Recovery modes to install CWM and CM10. The instructions are very detailed. Are detailed instructions available for the other steps recommended at the beginning of this thread?

I gather other necessary steps may include the following. If anyone could post links to instructions for any of the following, then I would be grateful.

nvbackup
NANDroid backup
format system, data, cache partitions
factory reset
install gapps package

There is a thread stickied so it's the first thread here. That's for nvbackup. After that go to the All Things Root Guide thread for further instructions. I recommend TWRP for your recovery.

Thanks confed, n4zty, and imSHAD. Is the concensus here, root the stock GS3, do nvbackup, do NANDroid bacup, install CWM and/or TWRP (Are the latter two different entities with the same function?), and then install CM10, and then gapps? Is starting from a non-rooted stock SG3 not recommended in this community, because you need root to perform nvbackup and NANDroid backup? Pardon my naivety. I can change a PC from Windows to Ubuntu. I know I can do this with a little guidance. Thanks to all for your patience.

M3 is working very good. Only have 2 problems: HW overlays don't stay clicked, & the voicemail icon doesn't go off after I go into it. Have to reboot for it to leave. Other than that very nice. Oh BTW, & google search won't update or reinstall. But google now still works ok.

Yessir, you are right on track. But I personally prefer twrp. I think it's easier & more user friendly. With twrp you can set up several zips to flash at one time. cwm doesn't. so when you get ready to install cm10, use twrp & put in the rom & the gapps at the same time.

Hey guys what's with the slow charge rate. Put it on charge at midnight and got up at 4 this morning and it was only at 50 percent. I am running 4-16 nightly.

Is this rom running smoothly for you guys? I kinda miss it, lol, but the inconsistency since switching kernels drove me away.

About two weeks ago I was outside of a class I was about to have a test in and I couldn't do a quick review 'cause my phone randomly restarted and the campus internet usually runs slow when downloading .pdfs, lol.

Absolutely. I'm on the M3 experimental & it's pretty darn good

I installed the nightly last night and from 11pm until now I have had about 30 reboots. and im not over exaggerating. I know because I listen to music a lot and it happens every couple of songs.

If not then what are the differences because I saw the m3 was made about a month or two ago?

EDIT: nevermind :P two weeks ago i saw wrong lol (saw wrong?)
any the differences question remains but I doubt there is any

Well, from what I've read, some nightlies have no change at all. Others may have a lil tweak here or there to see what happens. I've tried several nightlies up to M3. M2 was pretty good, but my boy likes M3 a lot. I don't go into the nightlies because of problems here & there. So the M1-M3 are about the same as a Stable.
If you like experimenting, I would suggest to load up the M3 & get it all set up the way you want. Do a backup, then try out the nightlies to see what works for you.
Don't wipe anything if you want to keep your apps & all. I think its called a dirty flash. That way if something doesn't work right you can always go to your backup that does work.

I like clean installs and Im running it now and so far so good but when I installed the nightly on first boot it asked to root my phone for me. When I installed this one it didnt ask me to... Was this a feature change? Btew i know for sure im not rooted. I keep wiping system for some reason... So i might install the latest nightly to root for me again then go and reinstall experimental

It seems like this rom still has that issue where the quality of picture messaging gets blurred... and I use picture messaging a LOT. Any fix for this? I just started to enjoy this rom again. :(
If not can you suggest a aosp rom that doesnt have this issue

I guess because I already had another rom installed when I was un-rooted.
I even tested it out by doing the "su" on a terminal. the $ remained and never saw a #. But i already had twrp and just reinstalled supersu binary and im rooted again.

But seriously no advice on the mms thing?
