MHL to HDMI, yes (was No HDMI out has me sad..)

The lack of SD support had me sad too. I'm one of those guys that likes to wipe his phone and computer every few months or so to start fresh.

You can still wipe and start fresh at any time. Without wiping SD data. And not having an HDMI out is no big deal, you can always buy a micro USB to HDMI cable. So you can still hook it up to your TV. :)

Yeah but wiping the phone wipes all data (photos etc).

So all I need is micro USB to HDMI? I would think there would need to be something in the software that would allow this.

I am sure the phone uses 2 partitions so a data wipe will only wipe the phone portion and not data.

The Nexus probably supports mhl which is hdmi though the usb port.

No it does not wipe all the data, my Nexus S only has internal storage and no SD slot. You can choose to wipe data, or wipe SD. If you wipe data it will wipe your whole phone except for the SD Card. (So there is really nothing to worry about here.)

The Galaxy Nexus does work with an MHL adapter.

I believe you are right on both counts.

I remember reading somewhere that you will need an MHL adapter for HDMI out on this phone.

Thank you guys for setting me straight. I'm glad I asked otherwise I would still be stewing about it.

I'm still confused though when you speak of SD on the nexus s. I understand the partition statement. Did the nexus s have an SD slot?

I reread and think I get it. The data (non os partition) is referred to as SD?

Any word on what size the partitions may be?

That's correct, if it's similar to the Nexus S. It has 1Gb patitioned for the OS, and apps. And the rest of the storage is partitioned as the SD card.

Is it user selectable? Can you specify 2 gigs for os and apps for example?

Also does the mhl HDMI adapter also transmit audio?

Older TV's do NOT support MHL. However, you can order an MHL to HDMI cable from amazon, ebay, etc and it will work with any TV. So no worries there.

As for the SD, I have no complains either, I cant remember the last time I actually took off the SD card from my Inc. You have two options, swipe clean everything or just the OS but keep all your saved data. So you have nothing to worry about. Just get the 32GB like i am.

How did I get into the iPhone forum? All this talk about adapters and dongles, plus no expandable storage?

OK, I personally don't mind the lack of expandable storage, but I seriously need another cable like I need a hole in the head. The HDMI out really sold me on the XOOM, and I was really hoping that I could just use that cable with the Galaxy Nexus. The possibility of no HDMI didn't even dawn on me until I saw the hands-on video.

No HDMI sucks, but I guess it should be expected, it is Samsung. Seriously making me reconsider my purchase, since I use the HDMI out on my XOOM all the time.

I plan on getting the 32 gb. Hopefully there is more than 1 gig allocated for the OS and apps. I'm coming from an OG Droid with 256 MB and I can't have more than 25 or so apps (yes I haves apps2sd but it still sucks).

Again, thank you guys.

Eddie

Nexus S had built in storage.

Also, Micro HDMI is a thing of the past. MLH is the future for phones. HTC (first to provide Micro HDMI) and Samsung (SGS2) already moved to MLH. I like it better since I dont need to be carrying an HDMI cable, just a small dongle whenever I go to places. It's only $15, nothing to really complain about.

Twenty minutes ago, I felt the same as you, having a Xoom with micro-hdmi cable. But after a little research (primarily the link above), I'm coming around. Not only does MHL support 1080p and 8 channel audio (7.1 surround), but it also charges. That's pretty darn nice. No worries about running your battery down or having to connect two cables.

Having the partitioned memory as well just got me back on the train.

It's been mentioned quite a few times already in this thread that this phone does do HDMI...

The HDMI issue was actually a breaking point for me. I'm happy to know that I can get a small piece to run movie from the phone to HDTV.

If I knew the razr would get ICS, I would have a hard decision to make. But that may not happen for 4-6 months.

OK, so here's the thing about MHL - Samsung is going to be bringing out TVs with MHL ports.

Those will charge your phone while your phone sends video. Anyone who's done a few hours of video via straight HDMI from a phone knows you need to run USB charging or risk running out of battery (depending on user setup, etc etc).

So - that's why MHL.

And it's really not a micro-USB to HDMI cable. It's an adapter with a micro-USB sized connector on one side (plugs into phone) and then the adapter has a full-sized HDMI port (so you use a normal HDMI cable, not a mini) - and the adapter needs power - so - the adapter has a microUSB port on it for that.

So - yes, until MHL catches on, this is similar to an iPhone rig of wires and adapters.

But, it is what it is.

Hope this helps.

btw - here's a picture of the adapter.

And yes, it's full HDMI, in size and capability, so that's digital video and sound.

HTC has dropped micro-HDMI in favor of MHL as well.

I think that leaves just Motorola with a straight HDMI port. For now.

Just to clarify, I understand that straight MHL ports can charge the phone while it sends video, but does the adapter also do that?

We're not sure if that's an adapter or phone issue.

We found that on the HTC implementation, it did provide some upstream power flow to the phone, but it was very small - enough to ensure 2 hour video playback, but clearly not fully charging.

As with all new tech, we'll have to see how this sizes up.

The Galaxy Nexus does work with an MHL adapter.

That sounds very definitive... Do you have an official source for that?

Not doubting you -- in fact I'm pretty confident you're right. I'm just really hoping you have some kind of "proof" to finally put my mind at rest, either from official word from Samsung or a successful MHL test on one of the dev phones given to the launch attendees (for which I could slap them).

There are rumors flying all over the web about MHL on the GN but nobody actually seems to know for sure; it's all based on assumption that it matches the port on the GSII. But given that Samsung already did a bit of a backslide from the GSII spec in terms of the microSD slot (or lack thereof) I'm not confident in assumptions right now!

The other part is that, if it does feature MHL, then Samsung really needs to get their marketing together and quit referring to it as simply "USB 2.0" in the spec sheet. If the port can manage output of 1080p video and multichannel audio -- even via an adapter -- then they need to highlight that. Otherwise it immediately looks like the spec is inferior to phones with native HDMI out, or even an iPhone dock connector.

To phone noobs like me, who had never heard of MHL before this week, it sounds like the Galaxy Nexus is stuck with a basic, ancient USB 2.0 port and no other connectivity except wireless. I'd actually written off the GN for that very reason until I saw MHL mentioned out of the corner of my eye on the GSII wikipedia page, which suddenly changed the whole outlook of the new phone.

I'm also hoping the Galaxy Nexus supports USB hosting via that port too, like the GSII. That would actually go a long way toward offsetting the loss of the microSD slot for me. Especially if something really stupid happens, like it launching as only the 16GB variant.

PS: I'm new. As you can see by the post count. So this can serve as my intro. Hi. Help me finally escape the clutches of this godforsaken 3GS to the greener grass of Android! :)
