Microsoft gearing to stop Linux, going beyond Mac lock-in

When ever you give a Corporation as much power as you have given Microsoft then it is always in their best interest to maintain that power at any and all given times. Just ask a company named Caldera oh wait never mind they went out of business. I personally think when I buy a computer it should come as I want it and not how someone thinks it should be. If I want to run Linux on it then It should be no problem for me to do so. After all its my computer or is it? I do have consumer rights don't I? I should have the right to determine what condition the computer and all its hardware and software.

Freedom is nothing to be taken lightly. It is the community's responsibility to find the exploits that root kits use and close them. How many rootkits affect Linux Systems? How many affect Unix Systems? If the only target is MS Windows then who is to say it wasn't MS Windows that created such kits as to "Justify" the actions on which they are taking now. Microsoft has always been the big bully in the Computer world. Now they are trying desperately to stop users from using alternatives. Why? well it boils down to this MONEY. Microsoft has lost a lot of business do to the success of the android phone and tablet. In other words Microsoft is loosing its grip on the tech world and is unwilling to change anything to make the program more open. Proprietary systems are useful to a point Just not really for everyday computing.

Linux, Freebsd, Solaris, and others will always find way to exploit the weakness of such bullies and end the end WE WILL CRUSH THE LIKES OF MICROSOFT.

When you buy a computer, you do have the option of what OS to put on it. At least this is the case when you order online. I know both Dell and HP give the option to put Linux or even Solaris on some computers you purchase from them. This requirement wouldn't apply at all to computers put together from bare bones kits as they wouldn't be Microsoft certified in the first place.

The idea that MS has invented the root kit and spread it throughout the world so that they can then create a defense against the root kit and block Linux in the process seems utterly ridiculous.

What I find funny is how much people are willing to give up in the name of "security". I guess Microsoft is taking a page out of the TSA's/Homeland security's playbook.

What are you giving up given that the vast majority of people want Windows on their computer? Also, how many Linux boxes are built from scratch? This wouldn't apply to them at all.

A couple of questions:

1) How long til MS gets another anti-trust lawsuit? ;)
2) How long til someone much smarter than myself writes some code to undo this nonsense?
does this mean that other OS's can be insecurely booted?

Is it people like me (running linux and xp still :P) that caused this? I can't say for sure, but if so... sorry.

:(

1. I'm going to go with - a long, long time.

2. That will depend on a number of things as well as the target, mobile or home.

Can other OSes be insecurely booted? The promise of the firmware is that it can on PCs - but we have zero guarantee that will be a configurable option for all shipped firmware.

Did people like us cause this?

I'm sure they don't mind the victims wondering if we're the cause. I would ask whose fault it is that some people still run XP when it's no longer supported and when we are on the threshold of a 3rd major update since XP. Sure, there's always a few holdouts, but unless poor or imminently satisfied or awaiting stability, I think we all like updating for best performance and new features. Whose fault was it that people rejected the Vista upgrade? Had that not been problematic, would you still be on XP?

I had been looking forward to Windows 8, thinking that Win7 pretty much assured me that they got over a hiccup I didn't like.

Now, I'll be back in waiting mode until this smoke settles. I'm no one's guinea pig and don't like updating to the latest when what I have does what I need it to do.

Is that vast majority in the USA or the world? More and more foreign countries governments are switching to Open source ( linux).

What if I built a box from scratch and want to add Windows 8, am I allowed to do so?

I don't see why not. Home made boxes have never been MS certified.

Man I am surprised to see so little attention to the fact that hardware wont even be able to be swapped out....and security???? When has Micosoft EVER been known for security. I run Linux boxes with a different OS in every room in my house....crap like this only makes me glad that I do,and will help me decide to NEVER purchase a box by any manufacturer that bows to them.

So, let me get this straight: Microsoft opposed SOPA but believe what equates to their own style of software censorship is ok?
Help me out here M$, I feel a double standard coming on....

Okay, maybe I'm dumb and not reading correctly; buuuut. Technically, can't you just run a liveCD, clear the hard drive and change the hard drive's formatting from this UEFI crap to fat32...?

I don't know, but it sounds to me like it is hard coded in there, much like a MAC address.
Now, it's probably not exactly like a mac address, because from the sound of it, you can have multiple keys... but I'm guessing it isn't something we will have access to (at least, until someone out smarts it).

Just my thoughts....

I'm not sure if that would work or even be the answer and really you don't want to format over to fat32 for the larger hard drives. Go with ext4 or lvm. get away from anything MS as far as the file system goes. My home server is running F14 and I have 2 different drives connected to it both are ext4 and I have no issues with accessing files from my windows computer.

I don't think the real issue is that We can find a work around (hopefully) I think the real issue is that we need to find one in the first place.

I hope I am not reading this incorrectly but...

This is BULL dust man!

Why the HELL can't I install Linux on MY machine??!!

I have really grown to like Linux Mint and Ubuntu... I like them A LOT more than windows.

Only thing I keep windows for is Dota and my studies that require it and some very minor other stuff.

But I think WINE (Free and I think Open Source Windows Emulator) will take over that job eventually so I won't be using Windows hopefully in the future.

Why can't I put what I want to on my machine?

I am not 120% sure but I think this is borderlining on human rights.

SOPA and Microsoft's 'windows certification' is hardly comparable.

lmao... very nice.

Shh! Quite! Else Balmer will come and get you with a BSOD.

Sure, if you think Aristotle was a dumbass, that might seem like a valid point he presented...

BIOS/UEFI doesn't live on the hard drive.

+ 19853072362413 Buddy!

This is the serious problem I have with this whole damn issue,

This is not fair by a long shot at all.

Why the heck should we even need to look for a stupid work around???

Seriously!

Why the hell should we need to do this AT ALL?

For goodness sake.

I am sure the world won't let this happen right?

Please tell me the world won't let this craziness happen.

Not cool

I think this is borderlining on human rights for goodness sake.

Damn man.

Just damn.

It is similar to Motorola trying to lock the boot loader on Android phones at least thats what I think.

Mark Shuttleworth has spent an absolute fortune pushing the open source world by making Ubuntu... not cool!

I am not laughing at all.

P.S. Mark Shuttleworth is South African for those who didn't know! :):):)

(Yeah we kick ass but suck ass at the same time!)
