Root [MOD] A2SD & S2E On CM7

Everyone to get this mod to work here is the steps...

Partition Sd card with clockwork mod...I have my sd ext setup a lil over 1gb....

Odin back to Hoark rooted factory settings....

Flash CM7...and add all hotfixes

next get the a2sd zip and put on sd card BEFORE applying it go into mounts and make sure SYSTEM AND DATA READS UNMOUNT...and then flash the a2sd....

once booted download a2sd gui from the market..and make sure it reads apps are on sd and zipalign is on....move dalvik cache to sd and rebuild....
it should reboot....

next go to market and get S2e and go in to S2e settings click import...its gonna say reflash...just reboot...it may take a few min but once booted all options in s2e should be checked...just open the program and see....after that DOWNLOAD ALL THE APPS YOU WANT:):):):):)......Thanks again to Chin checka....

Your Welcome & Thanks for that shorter version of how to install... Glad its working though..

did u use DTa2sd before?? i believe this way is better?

Installed as posted and loaded over 500mb of .apks with no hit against data
Then........rebooted and got like 20 fc messages after boot and had black screen with notification bar. Just annoyed now. So just going to stick with dtA2SD and leave S2E alone. Thanks for the post though. It was definitely cool seeing the data untouched.

yea i didnt put that many apps on it. just about 50+ over 200mb so far on the 500mb ext4. rebooted fine. even removed my sd out & plugged it to the pc to check out my sd. plugged back into phone & still works fine.

Could b your ext size was to large & 500mb's of apks???? Its Like A Overkill.

ive used from 500mb to 700mb with no probs.

thanks for trying it out & posting that prob.

I don't get it I must be doing something wrong.

I have a 500MB EXT2 Parition on my SD Card.

I installed CM fresh, I installed the latest hotfix, I even installed the GAPPS.

I rebooted, everything works great. I do this to make sure everything checks out.

I reboot the phone again and go to CWM. I install the Prevail A2SD (sorry for some reason the one you posted doesn't work at all, just saids installation complete but nothing else installs, neither does beta 5.)

The A2SD installation was fine. I go to A2SDGUI and enable App to SD, I enable ZipAlign on Boot.

I double check that CM settings have CM Settings -> Application -> Allow moving of Apps checked. (I set location to external, not sure if I should just leave it on automatic).

I move the dalvik cache to my EXT2 partition.

Everything checks out EXCEPT when I go to install programs from the market it always force-closes or restarts the CM Mod. In fact anytime I try to install an application CM restarts.

The funny thing is the phone works fine if I don't install A2SD and use internal memory. Am I missing something? What am I doing wrong? This seems to be working for quite a bit of people. I'm getting frustrated as A2SD just causes force closes.

I may have to look into Link2SD.

I think the problem here is you forgot to go to cwm menu mount /system and mount /data before you went to the zip flash menu.

mines is checked inigo. i selected external. if u put it on auto, it will install like the regular DTA2SD, decreasing internal memory a lil bit with each app install.

also dont put your sd something like 1gb for 2nd partition. 500mb to 700mb should do it. im using 500mb or something like that.

The prob lies with in the partition mounting. Everyone partitions different.
Some thru CWM & some with software. Some get it to work, some dont.

I personally havent been able to use mini tool or CWM to partition it right. it wont show on titanium back up @ all..

i used linux ubuntu disk utility 2 partition the sd. seemed the best 2 me with previous versions of A2SD. tried with others. didnt work.

if i read my partition on mini tool or easus it reads ext3 but on linux its ext4. so i def think its ext4.

mini tool wont really give u the right extension. says it does. but doesnt when reading. not sure about when partitioning.

also it says it when running the mini tool & creating 2nd partition, that windows will only recognize the 1st partition correctly.

but ima make a video tonight to show exactly what i did.

I got it working!

Okay the beta4 for A2SD does not work for me off the bat. It doesn't install everything EVEN when I mount correctly in CWM.

Here is what I did. I installed first the Prevail A2SD from http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prevail-all-things-root/412164-mod-darktremor-a2sd-prevail.html

Once that installs correctly. I mount system and data and all that again.

I NOW install from ZIP the beta 4. Worked like a charm. It overwrote the correct files with the updated one.

-----------------

NOTE: inigomontoyasr is correct! Checking that option in CM settings to under application 'Allow moving of Apps' is what killed my system for me. Leaving that unchecked works wonders and A2SD is properly working as it should. If I even touched that checkmark or touch the automatic to external everything goes nuts.

I double checked with TB to make sure A2SD was working. Which it was :) As long as I don't touch that setting it works fine.

heck I was even able to install S2E with no issues :)

Thanks I'll give it a try. Should I move the Dalvik Cache? Last time I tried I was having nothing but problems. Seems not too many people move it anyways. Just wondering...

yea the dalvik move will free up the internal. when u move dalvik it will take a lil min to reboot.

ok so it was the a2sd not being installed correctly.. i dunno about the allow apps being checked in cyanogen is what was causing your prob.

seems 2 b running fine on mines. this is why i say it works for some but not for others on certain things. lol.

i do kno the cyanogen compatibility mode messed a few things up on mines but glad its working now.

NOTE:
heres a screen of mines so u can c mines is checked with no probs.
so your prob didnt come from that.

screen 2 came out ****ed up but u can c its on external.

sorry for the headaches..
hope it works out now.

also thanks to people who helped out.

I have mine working correctly but my reboots since i installed s2e takes a min or two...just be patient the phone will boot back up and you will be running both mods perfectly...And I also was having problems with this mod until i odin back to factory and started from square 1...from there everthing went perfectly...So I advise everyone to start from factory or factory rooted version and make sure you partition your sdcard with your phone instead of minitool...youll be fine after that...and REMEMBER REBOOTS ARE GOING TO TAKE A MIN OR TWO...so just be patient...hope i helped out a lil bit...

Yeah I had to end up removing S2E. It was causing issues.

The problem is I don't think that A2SD and S2E work in unison. In fact I believe that one is supposed to be a replacement for another. According to what I've read it seems that S2E is supposed to be another form of A2SD and will import the information but doesn't work in unison with it.

Example: Everything was working fine when I had just A2SD installed. When I installed S2E it caused nothing but issues after a few reboots. Though I will admit it was working fine for a few runs. I believe that S2E literally takes over and doesn't allow A2SD to do anything. It's almost like having A2SD is redundant as S2E is supposed to do the exact same thing.

I don't see the benefits of having both installed really. If you read the comments on S2E a lot of people JUST installed this and didn't install A2SD and pretty much have the same results. I figure this is just a quick way to get something similar to A2SD without going through the hassle of installing the script.

Please let me know if I'm wrong. It just doesn't seem to me that having both installed is beneficial. Either both are doing the exact same thing at the same time or one is taking over the job from another. Somehow to me it seems like both software are fighting over whom puts the app in the SD.

Here is how I got everything working at least on my part:

  • factory wiped the entire phone
  • made a 512MB EXT2 partition on my SD Card
  • mounted everything using CWM (under mounts and backup), again (I do this to make sure stuff gets written)
  • Installed Hoarks CM mod latest version
  • Mounted everything AGAIN (just to make sure)
  • Installed the latest hotfix 4 from hoark
  • Mounted everything AGAIN (just to make sure)
  • installed the gapps that hoark bundled up
  • Mounted everything AGAIN (just to make sure)
  • installed the prevail A2SD script by inigomontoyasr: http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prevail-all-things-root/412164-mod-darktremor-a2sd-prevail.html
  • Mounted everything AGAIN (just to make sure)
  • installed the A2SD script posted here BETA4
  • reboot phone
  • It takes awhile the first time ;) May take a boot or two to get it working properly btw.
  • Once the phone is all the way in, setup everything and have your phone at the dash.
  • Load up A2SD GUI
  • Make sure Apps to SD is checked
  • Click on ZipAlign at Boot

NOTE: I didn't move the dalvik cache because everytime I do it causes nothing but issues on the phone. I have a feeling I know what it is so I'll get back to you on that.

Once I got everything working properly at least with A2SD I made a backup using CWM. Backups are important!

I DIDN'T install S2E as I was having issues with it. Though I'm experimenting with it now that I have a proper setup. I'll get back to you if I can get it working properly ;) Though I wish someone can explain the benefits of having both, seems like they cancel each other.

yeah like i said everything goes smooth until i added s2e then all hell breaks loose. ill just stick with one or the other.

they are redundant, and they do the same thing.

s2e moves the folder that could not be moved by the a2sd i modified for prevail phones. the latest a2sd beta WILL move that last folder if you open a terminal and enter these commands...
Code:
su
which will give root privileges and then
Code:
a2sd datasd
which will move /data/data to your ext partition.
this may give you problems with performance if your sd card is not fast enough (meaning class 6 at least) which is what the s2e page on android market says.
How to Import (move from Darktremor):
1. Full backup
2. Install S2E, go to settings, check ext4 and click Import
3. Reflash CM7 again (wipe is not needed)
Moving Applications data (/data/data) to sd-ext - Lower performance!!!
as for the a2sdgui not reporting proper internal space, that's a problem with ext4 roms and this phone in particular. the a2sd script and a2sdGUI app are written by different devs so it's possible that they are not always in sync. all of the a2sd commands can be used from a terminal and actually more are available that way. if you read the darktremor page on xda, it tells you what can be done with each version.

lol.. yea mines takes a lil min to reboot with all the apps. but i dont have any problems like everyone else here is complaining about.

installed both fine & run both no probs, with the options selected that others are saying its causing probs..

pretty simple 2 me if u know what your doin & can follow basic instructions..

i dont think the S2E is causing probs though & who really wants to be typing commands in terminal when S2E does it automatically for u, if set up right. my opinion, it works better 2 me with both, than it standing alone.
but just my opinion.

basically da main reason why i used S2E.
No internal Decrease. I have yet to c this working using other methods here & on other posted MODS here which i tried all.

but glad this is working out for u guys.

ENJOY For those who got it working fine.

you don't need both is all i'm saying. installing S2E from market and running it will move all the folders it can with the one app

there is no need to install a2sd first.

i think if you look in your init.d you will find a2sd scripts removed after importing to S2E. as there is no longer a need for them.

the bonus to S2E is the scripts and gui DO work in sync. unlike a2sd and it's app.

on mines, its still there in the init.d inigo.
maybe this is where the problems come into play that other users are having when combining em.

i have everything in the init.d.

00banner
01syscrl
02apps2sd
03firstboot
04modules
20userinit
99complete
dtapp
i think it may remove the dtapp one, but thats what the import does.
may move it to another directory for the S2E.

Ima Test With Each One By One. Post Screens To Check Differences Out.

Have U Checked Out The GB Source inigo?
I Went To Check It Out Lastnight & My Whole Android Dev System Crashed.
Have To Re-Install It & try later..

thanks again for the info, inigo.

Ok can i have a really stupid users guide? i used CWM make partition, and mounted the two --then installed selected the ones says to after market install a2sd---no install of s2e...and well still using system space

To prepare card
Partition sd card in CWM (0mb swap)
Back where CWM starts go to "mounts and storage"
-mount ext
-format ext

OR

Download free program easeUS partition master (pretty easy to use)
EaseUS Partition Master Home Edition - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

To install
Download Darktremor a2sd for prevail and put it on SD card
Boot into recovery
Go to "mounts and storage"
-mount system
-mount data
Back to CWM start menu and click "install zip from sdcard"
-find and select Darktremor a2sd for prevail
Boot to system
Check app drawer for A2SDGUI. If it's not there download from market
(settings are up to you I select apps to sd and move and rebuild dalvik on sd)

2 ways to check if A2SD is installed (that I know of)
-Titanium Backup will show the free space for it on startup screen as sd card(a2sd)
-Terminal Emulator from market. Type "su" enter($ changes to #) then type "a2sd check"

And from what I have personally experienced you will always use some internal memory. But a2sd is a giant improvement. I have 117 apps (not including system apps) and have 83.3 mb left of internal memory
