Moderators too harsh?

I have been a member of phandroid since I got my smart phone in february and have read alot of threads and followed many users. I have noticed that many users post irrelevant or unsubstantiated comments that do not have legitimate facts to back up their opinions. When someone with an actual opinion refutes these people with research, they are the ones that take the abuse and I have seen many users get banned and I don't think this is fair.

Most recently I have seen and followed threads with user andreacristiano. This user was banned for posting an opposing and insightful view to an irrelevant comment. Yeah, he made a rash comment but nothing deserving of being banned.

To end my thought I want to say I think the moderators should think through who should be banned and who shouldn't. Maybe the users who post rude and asinine comments should be banned instead of those who actually have something intelligent to say.

Part of an intelligent conversation involves putting your opinion across without offending others. It seems in this day and age that if someone says something incorrect in an online forum that it's okay for the rest to flame this person and make them feel stupid.

At the end of the day it's up to the owners/moderators of the site as to what's allowable and what isn't. Posting here is a privilege, not a right.

Cheers.

Interesting first post. ;) Please check out the zero tolarance thread. They are rules required by all users. No member is allowed to be rude or harsh to any other member, especially to newbies. If members abide by the rules they don't get probation or banning. Take me for example. I've been around over a year. I've obviously had a lot to say. (Check my post count). I've never been banned.

Sadly we all make mistakes and we are after all human.

No body is perfect.

I don't mean to be rude but maybe you should contact Phases if you are worreid that andreacristiano was mistreated in any way?

I don't think it is wise to start a new thread about some one being mistreated.

Here is Phases for easy reference:

And yes I myself have been a total jerk on these forums too but when I realize I have done wrong I really go out of my way to say something and apologize.

I hope I am not being rude here I don't want to be offensive.

Let me just say that no users are going to be banned on a first offence. (Excluding spam, of course.)

It usually starts with a warning or an infraction, depending on what was done/said. Also, non-staff members cannot see deleted posts so in some cases we might seem harsher than we actually are. ;)

Plus, any PMs/warnings/infractions etc are dealt with privately, rather than by posting in the forum. That's why it may appear our first action was to ban somebody, when in fact it was a last resort (as DaS mentioned).

I have never seen anyone be banned, but for the sake of keeping this place helpful and friendly, we definitely need to have defined guidelines to follow when following up misuse / abuse on this forum (which are all in place).

If people regularly offend then they need to be dealt with. Forums as big as this would be a nightmare without moderation.

The mods here do a great job and I for one am glad they're on board. I myself have had the odd disagreement with them, but I find them very open and approachable. Also, if they believe they have acted harshly, they are very courteous and apologetic. After all, we are all only human.

I want to say I think the moderators should think through who should be banned and who shouldn't.

Rest assured that a lot of thought goes into such moderation decisions, which often includes peer review of proposed actions. Also as noted previously, bans are rarely handed out for "first offences" other than for spamming. They're most often the result of repeatedly ignoring prior warnings.

Lets just say there is ALOT of "behind the scenes" stuff that goes on be it discussion of a member amongst staff, infractions, private messages, etc., and that although it may seem someone made one single mistake and got banned for it (excluding spam), that is almost never the case.
